What about the example of not wanting to see work type ads on sports subreddits?
sporkologist··on Dyslexia
Richard Feynman had to consult a mole on his left hand to remember the difference between left and right.
sporkologist··on Behind the scenes with the neuroscience of game design
One could almost say that it is a form of bait, that is trying to get someone to click on it.
sporkologist··on White House proposes steep budget cut to NOAA
> It could be a good way to catch leakers, too

That's what we need, to catch those darn leakers, no matter the cost to our society's future.

sporkologist··on DNA tests show Subway sandwiches could contain just 50% chicken
Or melamine.
sporkologist··on A US-born NASA scientist was detained at the border until he unlocked his phone
Wrong answer, citizen, the state requires you to carry a phone!

There may be a Facebook app to blame.
sporkologist··on Apple’s 2016 in review
> Now its just incremental phone updates.

Don't forget the watch, and the advances in dongle technology.

sporkologist··on Frequent sauna bathing can reduce the risk of dementia
The title clearly implies an assumed cause and effect relation, while the article itself doesn't even propose any mechanism for causation, only that there is a correlation. I consider this a form of clickbait (and bait-and-switch), therefore my snarky reply above.
sporkologist··on Frequent sauna bathing can reduce the risk of dementia
I was trying to make a broader point about cause and effect misdirection in low-information study results such as this (Finland is unusual in its great school system... It is more usual to attend a sauna than not to.... unlike most of the rest of the world) but it came off as pretty ignorant sounding to a lot of people.
sporkologist··on Frequent sauna bathing can reduce the risk of dementia
I'd bet that frequent yachting is also healthy.

... so this is supposed to make us feel better about the current situation?
sporkologist··on The Incompatible Food Triad
> crescent roll, cream cheese, apple pie

That one just looks awesome... well, a crescent roll is similar to pie crust anyway

sporkologist··on Priceonomics Idea Tester
So I guess Priceonomics has to prove that their predictive ability is better than their client, who one would assume is already very familiar with their target market. That is a tough sell.
sporkologist··on Priceonomics Idea Tester
> You could invest hours, days, or years in a writing project, only to find out that you’ve picked a bad idea that doesn’t interest people.

To paraphrase Elon Musk: Keep asking for criticism, especially negative, about your idea. If your idea has merit, people will like it, and that will result in a better chance of success. If you can't handle negative criticism, then you need to work on your own skills and handling rejection.

Tricking people via this Priceonomics "pre-article-writing" trick just seems like a trick.

> How can we get the government to respect our right to put anything in our body that we want to?

Sounds simple in principle, but too many people making too much money off stuff being illegal.

sporkologist··on Music Theory: An Education from First Principles
Thanks for mentioning that book, I hadn't seen it before but it formalizes a lot of things that have helped me in the past. Also they mention the Finland educational system. Yeah I'll have to get a copy of this one.
sporkologist··on Music Theory: An Education from First Principles
Get a good teacher and take weekly lessons for the first few months. Make sure your instrument is up to snuff. Make a habit of practicing at least 30 minutes a day of technically hard stuff. Most importantly, find an instrument (and music genre) that you love.

sporkologist··on Replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone catches fire on Southwest plane
It's starting to look a little like the Volkswagen fiasco.
sporkologist··on Ask HN: How do you get people to use your product when you suck at networking?
You have an extremely tough sell there. It sounds like you're trying to get in on a commodity product, without the sales chops. you may want to continue working for someone else -- that's not a bad thing, it just sounds like where you will be better off.
sporkologist··on What does a kilowatt hour look like?
> wrecked teslas

Wait what? where is this supply at

sporkologist··on Distant languages have similar sounds for common words
> animals were able to make sounds with vocal cords well before (like 100 million years before)

Um, no. Even between chimps and ourselves lies a vast gulf of unpronounceability, just due to vocal chord physics. Yet more interesting is the mapping between formants and meaning in linguistics.

sporkologist··on Learn Python Programming
This kind of thing leads to many "wait, what?" moments... confusing and aggravating to someone just learning syntax.
sporkologist··on Show HN: I invented a caffeinated toothpaste
