sporkl··on SoundStorm: Efficient Parallel Audio Generation
From what I've seen, the music industry (all genres including pop, classical, etc.) tends to be more about personality than actual content these days, so it's not really an issue.

Virtual singers are already pretty good anyways, I feel we've already passed the point of diminishing returns.

And even if you look at virtual singers, the ones which are popular are the ones from ten years ago, not the newer ones with more realistic voices.

sporkl··on Google claims to have proved its supremacy with new quantum computer
I don't remember the details, but the reason the 2019 paper was challenged was because Google did not take into account quantum simulation optimization techniques when estimating how long the computation would run on classical computers. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a similar situation here, where unconsidered optimizations prevent this from being quantum advantage.

Music OCR is in general in a pretty terrible state these days (I’ve tried most of the options on the market). I’ve heard good things about soundslice[1] though, but I haven’t had the occasion to try it yet.

I knew some middle school students who would place their school-issued chromebooks upside-down on linoleum and slide around on them. So no surprise here.

sporkl··on Ask HN: Side projects making less than $2k MRR, what's your project?
My main side project is Pivotuner[0], a MIDI effect plugin for adaptive pure intonation

It enables some pretty cool things like fairly straightforward microtonal modulation! Right now I'm working on a paper to submit to a computer music conference about it. Happy to send the draft if anyone's interested (email on website in bio).

I released it last December. I've had a couple sales, not many, but still enough to cover the cost of Apple developer membership, so at least I'm sort of in the positive!

Should also mention that I've gotten feedback on it from some pretty major artists, including Grammy nominees and winners like Jacob Collier! which is very very exciting

Happy to answer any questions!

Same here. Attempting to install or update on my computer gives me a message saying that there's an SSL error.

Doesn't seem to work well for music scores :(

Tangentially, I haven't been able to find any software which has reliable OCR for music scores; they tend to be just bad enough as to be useless. Was curious if any recent AI developments could be applied to this, but don't have the expertise to look into this myself. If anyone has any thoughts or wants to look into this, please feel free to email me! (link to my website in profile, which has my email)

sporkl··on Moviemaking and gamemaking are converging
I cannot speak for videogames, but I have a family member who was in the movie industry doing CG stuff, and it is already heavily outsourced to other countries than the U.S., particularly Canada, India, and Australia. I’ve been told that the movie industry is essentially dead in the U.S., besides having rights holders/production managers/etc.
sporkl··on Ask HN: Is there anyone here making music?
Hi,

I study (classical) music composition, lately been getting more into electronic stuff. The largest audience I’ve gotten was probably around 1000 people, although they were mostly elementary schoolers, as part of an educational event organized by my university. (Still very very fun to have that much of an audience!) I also have been getting into microtonal stuff.

I do have a bit of gear, but usually stick to a very minimal setup. Lately I’ve started getting into audio plugin development as well. Planning on releasing a new piece later today!

Definitely would be interested to be interviewed if you’d be up for it!

sporkl··on The Violin Doctor
I personally use Dominant strings for A, D, and G, with Pirastro Gold for the E string. Besides the E string, I haven't experimented with much else. If you're just getting back into things, it shouldn't matter too much; Pirastro Eudoxa also seem good. You likely already know this, but if your violin has fine tuners, you probably want to go with ball end strings instead of loop strings, and make sure to get the right size (4/4 if you're on a normal full-size violin).
sporkl··on The Violin Doctor
It's a law of diminishing returns type of thing. I haven't played on any super super expensive violins, but there is definitely a big difference between ~$100 violins and ~$1000 violins. Generally, the more expensive the violin, the more resonant (as opposed to squeaky) it is.
sporkl··on The Violin Doctor
One not-exactly-related thought is that with violins, both the room and the bow have a very large effect on the sound; it certain cases, it might be quite difficult to tell the sound of violins apart because the room itself is having an outsize effect on the sound. This doesn't by any means reject the findings of the study, was just a thought. Source: violinist for 13 years, currently attending a top US music school (for composition, not violin, but I still play in ensembles and take lessons).

Happy to try to answer any violin questions!

sporkl··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
Yep, the plugin works with MPE, though I'm also planning to add support for MTS-ESP, and MIDI 2 when it has wider support.

I haven't used it, but Scale Breaker is definitely a cool plugin, I do plan on stealing some features from it. Pivotuner has a step up in that it supports microtonal modulation resulting naturally from pure intonation (which is a bit of a niche case), but Scale Breaker's ability to sync across tracks is super useful and something I am planning to add.

Thanks for sharing your track, it's always nice to hear things using pure intonation!

sporkl··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
Yeah, the bending itself being audible can be a bit jarring, I'm planning to add the option to interpolate the bends slowly, so hopefully that will help. Thank you for the interest!

Pivotuner[0]: automatic real-time pure intonation and microtonal modulation

This is an audio plugin which I've been working on over the past couple years, I've gotten input from some pretty high-profile artists like Jacob Collier! Finally released it publicly late last year.

Pivotuner is a plugin which tunes MIDI data in pure intonation in real time. Besides enabling beautiful purely-tuned chords on keyboards, this also enables many other cool things such as microtonal modulation, and unusual chord sonorities! (more info on the website, this is copy-pasted)

Besides the demos on the website, there's some stuff on YouTube[1].

I'm good to answer any questions!

sporkl··on Ask HN: How do you manage your passwords in 2023?
I memorize all my passwords; they’re different but they all follow a similar format, so it’s not difficult to keep them all straight. There’s a couple variants of the format that I can cycle through when I need to change a password. The format involves the name of the service and a “salt” string, as well as some special character and uppercase/lowercase patterns. It’s quite nice to be able to keep everything in my head without needing to worry about a password manager!
sporkl··on Thelonious Monk’s Tips for Musicians (1960)
As a music student at a conservatory, I believe this is true in that setting as well! (Though I would say feel is more important than intonation, as long as a baseline level of intonation is in place, and of course ideally you have both)
sporkl··on Show HN: Pivotuner, adaptive pure intonation audio plugin
Hi, I made this!

Pivotuner is a plugin which tunes MIDI data in pure intonation in real time. Besides enabling beautiful purely-tuned chords on keyboards, this also enables many other cool things such as microtonal modulation, and unusual chord sonorities!

I've been working on Pivotuner for roughly the last 2 years, so I'm very excited to finally publicly release it!

I started this project in high school, with the mentorship of Ben Bloomberg! I've also gotten feedback from Jacob Collier, which is pretty crazy.

Happy to answer any questions!

sporkl··on Inkbase: Programmable Ink
They mention towards the end that they haven't found a natural programming model for this sort of thing yet and are playing around with different ideas. My initial thought was that an APL-style language with OCR could be a fairly natural fit, maybe as part of a node-based thing like their Crosscut project.
sporkl··on Resources for microtonal music
If anyone’s interested, I’ve been working on a plugin for automatic adaptive pure intonation, which can make things like microtonal modulations relatively easy to do! Hoping to release publicly before the end of the year.

https://www.dmitrivolkov.com/projects/pivotuner/

I use the plugin at 1:56 in this thing in order to modulate up about a quarter tone for the end (it's otherwise in 12edo)

sporkl··on Resources for microtonal music
Bitwig has a built in device that can do any 12-note tuning or equal division of the octave tuning (with tweakable octave I think). That said it cannot really do other tunings. But these two types of tuning are the most common, and I guess with the new Note Grid device it should in theory be possible to do pretty much any tuning.

Edit: it looks like sevish has multiple notes tuned the same in order to get less than 12 notes per octave, so that's also possible.

sporkl··on Vocaloid 6
I haven't used it much but OpenUtau (under active development) has been nice. Cross-platform, automatically handles internationalization issues, and the phenomizer system is very nice. Works well with the free multilingual Kumi Hitsuboku voicebank[0].

Also has integration with NNSVS (neural net based vocal synthesizer) and the entire UTAU ecosystem.

I would say this is the good FOSS solution!

I'm currently around page 200, and it's been great as an introductory resource as someone with no other background in DSP.
