spo81rty··on The console wars have been lost
Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite are all my kids play. Everything else is fighting for scraps it feels like. Not to mention a million mobile games.
spo81rty··on The healthcare market is taxing reproduction out of existence
And then the hospital charges part of the delivery charges to the baby which has a separate deduction.

At least, that is what they did to me.

It's all a scam.

spo81rty··on Microsoft keeps adding stuff into Windows we don't need
I love that the writer complains about things Microsoft keeps adding that we don't need, and then goes on to recommend more things we don't need, lol
spo81rty··on James Webb, Hubble space telescopes face reduction in operations
Why does it take 300-400 employees to run a telescope?

As a taxpayer, that's what I want to know.

spo81rty··on Tell HN: I Lost Joy of Programming
The problem is most software engineers are disconnected from why their work even matters. It's hard to be motivated when you can't see the impact your work has on others and you don't get any recognition for it.

I just wrote a new book about how engineering leadership has to change and this is one of the key problems. https://productdriven.com/book

spo81rty··on Cloudflare Acquires Outerbase
I like Cloudflare. I also feel they are doing too many things...
spo81rty··on The Software Engineering Identity Crisis
I think it comes down to ownership. Going forward it will be more important for engineers to show more product ownership of their domain. Product thinking is becoming more important.

That doesn't mean you are a salesperson. It means you are more connected to the users and their problems.

spo81rty··on Ask HN: Would you still choose Ruby on Rails for a startup in 2025?
I wouldn't because it is difficult to recruit and find developers for it.
spo81rty··on How to make Product give a shit about your architecture proposal
If you are building software to build a product, you are on the product team.
spo81rty··on The Virtue of Slow Writers
It's never been easier to be writer thanks to AI. You dictate endless thoughts and AI actually translates the ramblings super well.

What does a CTO do? That changes a lot from a big company to a startup. I came up with the PPAP framework which I hope helps explain it.

It also comes with an official song and dance to help you remember it.

Being a CTO is about these 4 key things. But the order of them typically changes depending on the size of the company.

What do you think of PPAP?

spo81rty··on Level up your Coding Skills building real-world applications
I love the real world projects!
spo81rty··on My 20 year career is technical debt or deprecated
I got hired for a job specifically because I knew crystal reports! I don't miss that.
spo81rty··on CTOs should be writing requirements not code
You are exactly right. Things of course change a lot with company size.
spo81rty··on CTOs should be writing requirements not code
Some people also have hobbies
spo81rty··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
Just because you have a degree or think you are a software developer, it doesn't mean you are any good at it and should be hired. Companies are substantially better off having fewer developers than having bad ones.

Bad developers take a lot of time to train, manage, QA their work, fix their work, fix their work again, and then finally someone else just does it. They are in fact a net NEGATIVE impact on the team. You are actually better off without them. They actually slow you down instead of improving productivity.

It's akin to hiring a cook who screws up every meal they make. Not only did I pay them to do so, now I have to pay others cleanup their mess.

spo81rty··on U.S. physicists rally around plan to build fusion power plant
Meanwhile, reportedly China has already built one and is testing it now. So the USA is 20 years behind?
spo81rty··on Twitter and Facebook's action over Joe Biden article reignites bias claims
The only thing worse than writing unit tests is writing tests for destroying free speech.
spo81rty··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
It is absolute insanity that they charge a 30% fee to buy some services like Fortnite, Tinder, etc, but then charge NOTHING if I buy from Amazon or Instacart.
spo81rty··on What harm do minimum wages do?
Nobody has to work for minimum wage. Nobody is forced to take the job.

Companies will only pay it if people are willing to work for it.

It's basically supply and demand.

spo81rty··on What harm do minimum wages do?
At my last startup 15 years ago we paid our support staff $12 and had no problem hiring people. But the people we could hire for $12 sucked at the job. They just didn't have the skills or talent.

So we started paying $16+ and hired much higher quality people.

Companies always want to pay as little as possible, but they also have to be able to attract the right level of talent.

spo81rty··on Postal Service Warns Mail-In Ballots in 46 States May Not Be Delivered in Time
I'm still trying to figure out why we don't vote via smart phones. Surely there had to be some country in the world doing this?

Vote, take a selfie, photo of an ID and submit or something. Can't be that difficult.

spo81rty··on Timescale Cloud: Multi-cloud, fully-managed time-series in AWS, Azure, and GCP
I want a hosted PaaS solution. I don't want to self host it. That is the pricing I am comparing.
spo81rty··on Timescale Cloud: Multi-cloud, fully-managed time-series in AWS, Azure, and GCP
I was interested in Timescaledb recently but found the cost to be extremely expensive and you can only get all the good features in their cloud version as PaaS.

I would also suggest looking at Citus for scaling Postgresql. With the Azure reserved discounts, Citus is like less than half the price of Timescaledb. Citus also helps tremendously with multi-tenant scenarios.

Of course, depends on what you are trying to do.

spo81rty··on We Can Do Better Than SQL
I love SQL. I HATE using Elasticsearch because it doesn't support SQL. If you ever used Elasticsearch, you know exactly the nightmares I am talking about.

Products support SQL because everyone knows it and it works, regardless if it isn't perfect. Trying to create a new version of SQL is ruining your capability to have millions of trained users that already know how to use your product.

spo81rty··on Who still needs the office? U.S. companies start cutting space
Or you can move somewhere where the cost of living is 80% lower...and still work remote.
spo81rty··on Twitter Engineering:We’re starting with a set of words we want to move away from
Where does this ever end is my thought as well.
spo81rty··on [dead]
Zoom is awesome. All these clickbait articles are annoying.
spo81rty··on Ford plans to build 1k respirators per month and 100k face shields per week
Sadly, by the time we get any production volume of these things we will have missed the critical timeframe we needed them.
spo81rty··on Letting nurse practitioners be independent increases access to health care
How is this different than minute clinics and such at places like CVS? We definitely need more NPs. So much of basic health care doesn't seem very complicated.
