spo81rty··on US Income Inequality: All for the Top 1%
Any investor can make 4-6% annual gains in the stock market year over year. I don't think that says much about inequality as a whole.
spo81rty··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
Are you married and have kids? That changes the dynamics. Streaming Disney will be great for kids.
spo81rty··on Apple’s refusal to support Progressive Web Apps is a detriment to the web
Apple doesn't want web applications to somehow replace apps in the app store. They make way too much money from their app store. Some of these key features like push notifications are the only reason to even make a native app, for some types of apps.
spo81rty··on How do I know if I'm good at programming?
I couldn't agree more. It's all about problem solving. The coding part is just how you do it. If you have to be told how to write code or architect a solution, you are not a good programmer... yet!
spo81rty··on Treaty banning nuclear weapons approved at UN
I think the only hope is missile defense systems which could yield these missiles useless. Only then would they provide no value as a deterrent.
spo81rty··on How is Ruby different in Japan?
This article mentioned Rails is on the decline in popularity. Anyone have any thoughts on the truth of that?
spo81rty··on Chicago taxi industry sliding towards collapse
The fact that someone would pay $300k for the right to drive a taxi blows my mind.
spo81rty··on Skylake now GA on GCE
With all the craziness of different CPUs and server configs... just makes me want to hurry up and go serverless!
spo81rty··on Sprig is shutting down
Blue Apron must have much higher margins too. I think that is the key. Delivering cooked food every day requires a lot of labor and complexity.
spo81rty··on Sprig is shutting down
I think the problem with these cooked meal services is scale. It is very hard to scale these operations across multiple cities. The margins just aren't there for the layers of complexity and management. They are better off as small businesses, just like a restaurant franchise model.

I have used a couple of them in Kansas City over the last 5 years. Before this was even a craze. Success Meals and Healthy Meals. Both were fantastic and neither needed to raise $50 million dollars to do it.

spo81rty··on Ask HN: Should I create a clone of a popular SaaS with rock-bottom pricing?
Lots of good comments here but wanted to point out a key point nobody else mentioned.

Price alone won't let you win, but perhaps it might if you are targeting a different market segment.

For my company, our competitors focus on large enterprises. We focus on the small and mid sized companies. Our pricing is lower, our product is simpler too.

Focusing on smaller companies also changes our customer acquisition strategy to be different than our competitors. That was the hardest part to figure out too!

spo81rty··on Better battery life with Microsoft Edge
Pretty awesome to see all the hard work they did just to optimize battery usage.
spo81rty··on Ask HN: Has attracting a blog audience become harder?
Development related blog posts never get super high traffic. You can't compare an article about some python topic to YouTube video about a mass market consumer tech product.
spo81rty··on Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around?
I share your sentiment. They can grow slowly like most normal companies and have an amazing business.
spo81rty··on The Impact Github is Having on Your Software Career
If a potential employee contributed to an open source project that is a plus and something to talk about. But I would NEVER expect it. 99% chance their previous employers would have kept all of their source code private and not public on github.
spo81rty··on Ask HN: Which cloud is good in support and value for money for small websites?
Well you can try using an Azure App Service in shared mode which is very cheap.
spo81rty··on Top Developer Tools of 2016
One of the top NEW tools should definitely be Prefix. It was released early in 2016 and is now used by over 10,000 .NET and java developers. It is a lightweight profiler that tells you everything your code is doing.

spo81rty··on Medium lays off 50 employees, shuts down New York and D.C. offices
Any ideas what they needed $132 million in funding for? Seems like a ton of money for what they do.
spo81rty··on Newest MacBook Pro is the first MacBook not recommended by Consumer Reports
Check out the Asus Zenbook Pro. We have a few in the office. Great value for the price. I use a Dell XPS 15 and it has been great.
spo81rty··on AWS X-Ray – Distributed Tracing System
Some have mentioned is this full APM and does this compete with New Relic, Dynatrace, Stackify, Appdynamics, App Insights, etc.

Those products are primarily based on code profiling. For example, at Stackify we automatically profile key methods for dozens of common dependencies and frameworks to understand their usage and performance. Every SQL, NoSQL, caching, queuing providers and many other things. Plus app errors, logs, etc.

So the best I can tell from the AWS blog and docs is the answer is no its not a full APM. It appears to track how long a web request takes and any usage of the AWS services via their SDK. More of a lightweight service mapping of AWS services. So SQL database or HTTP calls probably aren't tracked.

In the future could they expand it? Sure. But for now it seems limited compared to a full blown APM product. Although this could be help for identifying performance problems with AWS services.

spo81rty··on A world without the Mac Pro
Not everyone uses the short cut keys. I never use them but I know they exist.
spo81rty··on A world without the Mac Pro
I have seen that on Windows when dragging between monitors, but only if they are different resolutions. At work I use 3 monitors all 4k and they work flawlessly.

But yes some windows apps still leave a lot desired on 4k if they haven't been updated.

spo81rty··on A world without the Mac Pro
Why would most macOS users care about the Windows registry, Microsoft APIs, OS level PDF, or POSIX? Perhaps a programmer, but not an end user?

Seems like I would take a super powerful Windows or linux server any day over a lower powered Mac Pro just because of the OS if hardware specs were that critical.

Taking 10 vs 1 minute to render would be way more important.

BTW, Windows 10 has multi desktop and most apps work fine with high DPI.

spo81rty··on ESPN Loses 621,000 Subscribers; Worst Month in Company History
My complaints about the NFL is really the ridiculous length of the games and slow pace. The games are just boring. I've turned to be more of a soccer fan.

In regards to sports revenues, I thinkit makes more sense for us as consumers to just subscribe directly to the leagues for the content. I signed up for MLS Live and can watch any game I want. Cut the cable stations out of it. Make the leagues create a product that people want to pay for.

spo81rty··on Former Sequoia partners: The Midwest is the future of startups
Head hunters are desperate to find anyone with experience. I literally fired the worst developer I've ever had work for me and he instantly found a job. I was amazed.
spo81rty··on Former Sequoia partners: The Midwest is the future of startups
I don't think where developers go to school have all that much to do with it... The best developers I know don't even have college degrees. They were self taught and it is just in their blood.
spo81rty··on Former Sequoia partners: The Midwest is the future of startups
And we have awesome springs and falls with all the beautiful trees. Something I really missed when I moved to Oklahoma for a couple years. They have very few big trees.
spo81rty··on Former Sequoia partners: The Midwest is the future of startups
As long as you are in a major city it isn't an issue at all. I would define a major city as any with a pro sports team.
spo81rty··on Former Sequoia partners: The Midwest is the future of startups
My senior devs in KC all make about 110-120. I agree!
