spinach··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
I mean, you really don't. They are mostly infected with malware, it will probably try compromise as many devices on your network as it can to make them part of a botnet and try to access as many files as it can.

Those things are probably infected with malware.

spinach··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
This technology is super new and I've only seen AI posters really proliferate in the past few months and suddenly... people don't know how to live without it?
spinach··on The quiet disappearance of the free-range childhood
They also have a culture of enduring things in silence for the greater collective good. For instance, most girls and women will have stories of harassment, especially by men on crowded trains but almost none of them will do anything about it.
spinach··on Gene-edited pancreatic cells transplanted into a patient with type 1 diabetes
But being overweight is a huge risk factor for developing it and absolutely can contribute to it. I don't how it being more deadly in skinny people detracts from that or is relevant at all.
spinach··on Women dating safety app 'Tea' breached, users' IDs posted to 4chan
Statistically that is a rather small number. But if we take the number of women in say, America, a web search says 334.9 million. 0.05% of that is 167,450. That is quite a lot of women being killed by their partner.
spinach··on The Last of Us Part II – Seattle Locations Tour
But Lara Croft and Bayonetta were made for the male audience. They were very palatable to males because that was their purpose especially visual wise. I don't think it's very representative of actual women and their experience.
spinach··on Show HN: AI game animation sprite generator
I'm not sure where you consensus is coming from but AI art is getting really, really good. I used to be able to easily tell what was AI art when others couldn't but that's changing fast.

It's been trained on some of the best artwork. Various artists have been told their artwork looks like AI, meanwhile it's actually the other around. Already in the app stores there are many games full of AI art that the average person without an artist's eye probably can't see the difference compared to something a human made.

I think art is very different from other jobs, it's more like the soul of humanity. When we look back through time, we mainly look at the art and what it can tell us, only a niche portion of people will care about the other things.

If we let machines do everything, even create our culture and art, what is left for us? Just to be consumers?

spinach··on Thoughts on thinking
I've had the same experience but with drawing. What's the point when AI can generate perfect finished pieces in seconds? Why put all that effort in to learning and drawing something. It's always been hard for me but it used to feel worth it for the finished piece, but now you can bring a piece of computer art into being with a simple word prompt.

I still create, I just use physical materials like clay and such, to make things that AI can't yet replicate.

spinach··on TikTok's algorithm exhibited pro-Republican bias during 2024 presidential race
And many platforms had a pro-Democrat lean, especially in the 2020 election. Blaming tiktok seems like scapegoating instead of looking introspectively at the Dem's failings like having a weak leader and pushing various insane ideologies.
spinach··on How Spotify Killed Lo-Fi Hip Hop
Lofi music is a really popular genre to listen to as background music, I wouldn't say it's a tired genre. Perhaps for creators it is, but for listeners it's not.
spinach··on Peanut Butter Day: Going Nuts over NIST's Standard Reference Peanut Butter (2016)
Do other countries also use NIST's products as standards, or do other countries have their own standards/NIST?
spinach··on It sure looks like Meta stole a lot of books to build its AI
Just stating biological reality is "transphobia" now, if even speaking about reality is censored we are lost.
spinach··on TikTok goes dark in the US
App stores are region/country specific and the accounts are linked to that.
spinach··on The Origins of Wokeness
People who lean left are choosing to leave.

Greg Lukianoff of FIRE, a free speech defender said Musk made twitter better for free speech (on balance): https://youtu.be/Er1glEAQhAo?si=2aWdSIsbKzjz0nGA&t=2853

spinach··on Trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
It's interesting how this conversation about free speech on twitter really only came up after Elon Musk took over, even though it was terrible before Musk. If you had opinions on certain spicy topics that went against the American Democrat left you would be suspended until you removed the post or banned. There was even the "Twitter Files" which documented some of this.

It actually seems more open to me now, only that people who got used to being able to ban people they didn't like so they left. Yes, Musk does things are suspicious, but overall I've found the experience better, as someone who holds moderate views.

spinach··on Spotify is full of AI music
It sounds like you mean the ghost music, which several people have referenced already in this comment section. That is made by real people while in the linked article they are talking about AI generated music.
spinach··on America is becoming less "woke"
It's usually used to mean identity politics, isn't it? The origin of the word has it's roots in racism, but now it's come to basically mean all forms of identity politics.
spinach··on DDoS attack on Twitter, when Musk was going to interview Trump
I use twitter a fair bit and haven't seen any disruptions - though I use it only in browser, maybe the app has seen some. It seems like only the Spaces part with Trump was overrun and not working which does make Musk's claim seem sus but they got it rather quickly working anyway. Ever since Musk took over there has been an insane amount of doomposting about twitter but it's still going fine.
spinach··on LG and Samsung are making TV screens disappear
Flickering tvs in windows would make being outside in a place with buildings become like being on a webpage full of video ads.
spinach··on Researchers invent 100% biodegradable 'barley plastic'
Paper bags might be biodegradable, but then we have issues with deforestation for the material.
spinach··on Traffic noise hurts children's brains
Also why are lawn mowers so loud and not made to be quieter in some way? Why does everyone need to cut their lawn in the first place?
spinach··on Musk, SpaceX sued by former employees alleging sexual harassment and retaliation
Appointing women to posts, and the alleged sexual harassment seem like completely separate issues. What is your point?
spinach··on Leafy vegetables found to contain tire additives
But if part of the problem is simply tire particles in the air and rain, a backyard garden will have the same problem.
spinach··on Quieting the Global Growl
Humans in cities have also got used to the noise. Go from a quiet forest or rural area in the middle of nowhere to a city or residential area where you have cars, trains, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, air planes, loud barking dogs, etc. It's shockingly noisy. It's surprising that people don't want to do more about the noise pollution but it seems many just got used to it.
spinach··on YouTube seems to once again be rolling out its widely hated new web redesign
Truly. I have an extension that blocks them ("Hide YouTube Comments, Live Chat, & Related"). Every so often I will unblock them for a certain video, but life is not better with them for the most part.
spinach··on OpenAI departures: Why can’t former employees talk?
He doesn't seem have much of a filter because of his aspergers, but I think he genuinely believed those things. And they are more on the level of calling people names on the playground anyway. In the grand scheme of things, those are pretty shallow "lies".
spinach··on Adam Curtis on the dangers of self-expression (2017)
It's easy to look back at history and build a simple narrative, but during that time a lot of art was being made even by amateurs and people without much money. And the majority of drawings and paintings that are done are going to be lose to time and only the most well cared for survive. And then there are different types - pottery, basket weaving, etc. In several hundred years, the majority of art created now will be lost and people will be able to create a simple narrative about the art of our era as well.
spinach··on Sound-suppressing silk can create quiet spaces
What about lawn mowers/leaf blowers/snow blowers? And dogs.
spinach··on The follow lie, and why it's worse than ever
X/Twitter has the "following" tab which avoids this problem, but I personally only use lists and have my main one bookmarked. I've done this for years and wish other platforms had "lists" like X. It avoids this problem and makes it easy to organize by topic.
