spiantino··on OpenAI may have solved a fundamental AI bottleneck
This is pretty cool. It sounds like they have found a way to do random initialization and pair it with a learning rate that makes the loss curve invariant to the width of the network. Then they can do hyperparameter optimization on a much smaller version of the network and trust that those hyperparameters will also be optimal on the full size network.
spiantino··on It’s time to admit quantum theory has reached a dead end
This is a good question to bring to /r/askphysics . It's pretty simple, and isn't the kind of problem with quantum mechanics that the article is referring to.
spiantino··on Ask HN: What is your system for backing up family photos and video?
I also use Synology, but with apple photos. There's a mac mini on my home network that syncs the photo library automatically, and then Synology Drive syncs the local folder to the Synology. That is in turn backed up to backblaze weekly
spiantino··on Facebook-owned sites were down
You can get through to a web server, but that web server uses DNS records or those routes to hit other services necessary to render the page. So the server you hit will also time out eventually and return a 500
spiantino··on Facebook-owned sites were down
It's amusing that the top 3 trending reports are the FB sites that are down, and then the mobile carriers themselves, presumably because when FB doesn't load they assume it's their mobile network's fault. People really do think FB is the internet
spiantino··on Using a laser to blast away a Bayer filter array from a CCD
I'm an avid astrophotographer, and the prices for cooled mono and cooled color cameras are the same. If you compare a dedicated, cooled astro camera to a consumer DSLR then yes, they are more expensive. But apples to apples they are exactly the same price. Actually, looking live the mono version is a bit cheaper:

https://optcorp.com/products/zwo-asi6200mc-p - color $3999

https://optcorp.com/products/zwo-asi6200mm-p - mono $3799

FWIW, those photos (4,5) of the Andromeda galaxy aren't from the HST. The Andromeda galaxy is about 6 times larger in the sky than the moon, so those are most likely from an amateur with a telescope (looking at the diffraction spikes, a reflector). Decent work, nothing special.
spiantino··on The neural network of the Stockfish chess engine
Yes, the overall algorithm will do something much more precise and comprehensive, so it's not like this scoring function needs to be perfect. Still, it matters in a quick evaluation so I'm surprised it isn't in there.

A few examples come to mind where, for instance, white has a bishop and knight attacking f7 and it's black to move. If black castles nothing interesting happens and white is likely overextended. But if black cannot castle white will win a rook.

I can make up a similar situation with en passant, and this does come up, but a lot less frequently.

So anyway, surprised you wouldn't toss a few bits in there, at least the 2 for ability to castle by each player.

spiantino··on The neural network of the Stockfish chess engine
Great writeup!

One thing I don't understand is why it would be smarter to augment the inputs with some of the missing board information - particularly the availability of castling. Even though this network is a quick-and-dirty evaluation, seems like there's room for a few additional bits in the input and being able to castle very much changes the evaluation of some common positions.

spiantino··on Statement Regarding Repurchase Operations
I don't think that's whats happening. Basically, in a repo you have one party posting a treasury bond as collateral and being lent the equivalent amount of cash. There's an interest rate you're charged on the cash, and potentially a "haircut" on the amount of cash relative to the value of the bond that a bank might take if they decide the other party is a risk and they want more collateral posted.

What you're describing is an increase in "haircuts" in these transactions between banks, but I haven't heard anyone report that has been happening. It has been, more simply, that too many people are showing up with bonds and want cash and too few people are showing up with cash and want to lend it. So the interest rate has risen

spiantino··on Uber IPO underwriter so certain IPO was overpriced they shorted it themselves
They went into the first day of trading >115% short so they could buy more in the open market. As they cover the short they are adding buying pressure, but if the stock is down from the offer price, also making a handsome profit on each share
spiantino··on Fastai for PyTorch: Fast and accurate neural nets using modern best practices
Shameless plug, but another option for running your experiments on a GPU is Spell (https://spell.run). Very simple to use and will allow you to use as many GPUs as you want at once and only pay for the compute time. You can also run GPU-enabled kernels for Jupiter.

Fast.ai instructions here: https://learn.spell.run/fast_ai

spiantino··on Universal Basic Income and the threat of tyranny
Completely agree. Basic Income would not only be tremendously stimulative and probably lead to more growth and demand for labor, it would also give many the flexibility to avoid traps of poverty and engage with the economy in a more sustainable and ultimately productive way.
spiantino··on Facebook to open-source AI hardware design
Actually the PCI express topology is configurable, which is one of the innovations. You can put all 8 gpus on a single CPU bus or have 4 on each CPU (but have to use QPI between them)
spiantino··on Facebook to open-source AI hardware design
We have distributed implementations that allow us to use more than 8 GPUs to train a single network. These machines have 8 cards each, but we aren't limited to a single machine (though having more GPUs connected via PCI than via Ethernet helps)
spiantino··on Facebook to open-source AI hardware design
Author here - in this case we are talking mostly about ~halving the time of a single minibatch in training a variety of standard neural networks. That type of training tends to be very hard to distribute. The servers also have 8 gpus in a single host, which is an additional performance boost and isn't included in the 2x above.
spiantino··on Uber Valued at More Than $50B
His analysis used the size of the current taxi market as the ceiling for Uber's revenue. In San Francisco Uber is already generating 3x as much as the traditional taxi market was.

spiantino··on Reddit’s empire is founded on a flawed algorithm
Looking at that code I find it really hard to believe that is the intended formula. It's clearly an attempt at logarithmic magnitude in either direction with a time bonus added in. The fact that the typo usually doesn't affect things much is almost guaranteed - if it made results obviously bananas it would have been found sooner.

spiantino··on A Note from one of Cloudflare's upstream providers
Would you mind explaining this piece of the story in a little more detail?

"When the attackers stumbled upon this, probably by accident, it resulted in a lot of bogus traffic being injected into the IXP fabrics in an unusual way, until the IXP operators were able to work with everyone to make certain the IXP IP blocks weren't being globally re-advertised."

It's pretty fascinating and I think most of the HN audience, myself included, would be able to understand the actual technical detail.

spiantino··on Randi Zuckerberg Also Confused About Facebook Privacy
I'm not sure how you know what she thought or how she interprets the privacy rules. If someone posts something as friends only and someone jacks the link to the image and posts it on twitter, publicly, it doesn't mean the poster doesn't know the privacy rules of Facebook. It means someone who could see the photo took it and made it public. In this case it's the poster who didn't realize it wasn't already public (again, understandably, though in error).
spiantino··on Randi Zuckerberg Also Confused About Facebook Privacy
No, she (understandably) didn't know Callie was friends with her sister.
spiantino··on Randi Zuckerberg Also Confused About Facebook Privacy
She posted it as "friends only" and tagged her family members. The person who tweeted it saw it and assumed that it was showing up because she is a subscriber of Randi's public posts, though in reality it wasn't public and she saw it through a friend connection with one of Randi's sisters. She tweeted the image based on that assumption. Randi saw it, was surprised, and then discovered how it happened (because Randi knows how privacy controls work quite well). They communicated on Twitter and realized the misunderstanding. The end.
