sphix0r··on Podman 4.4
What are the benefits of using podman over docker desktop? I've just got my new M1 macbook and are tempting to try docker desktop alternatives..
sphix0r··on Kubernetes reinvented virtual machines in a good sense
Hosted k8s is a blessing for development teams. A great benefit is that integrating k8s into tools such as Github or Gitlab pipelines makes it a unified and easy deployment cycle. No more issues regarding different release procedures while someone is out of office.
sphix0r··on Ask HN: What Happened to Big Data?
Compliance and web3 arrived.

A lot of companies didn't even need to go the hadoop route. CSVs, jupyter notebooks and SQL databases are very powerful tools for most companies.

sphix0r··on Firefox 93
Anyone has information about the details of Smart Block 3.0? The "learn more" URL returns a 404.
sphix0r··on Bitcoin Is Time
It's really sad to see the current state of bitcoin. We can't really justify the current energy consumption while mainly being used as a financial instrument to speculate on.

Nano has been on my eye for a while now. I hope Nano will get the attention it deserves. Sub second feeless money settlement transactions is such a game changer. Nano just works.

sphix0r··on Bitcoin surpasses $50K as major companies jump into crypto
Yeah, that's what bitcoin should have been. Too bad it also consumes an insane amount of energy and isn't able to process a lot of transactions per second. Hope that a good cryptocurrency gets more traction and will be the next decentralized "paypal / digital currency".
sphix0r··on App suddenly crashing on startup due to FBSDKRestrictiveDataFilterManager.m
Insane. Good to know what made my Spotify app crash upon startup though.
sphix0r··on Western Digital's 16TB and 18TB drives: EAMR HDDs enter the retail channel
Kinda in the phase of buying disks for a $500-ish~ raid 5 NAS setup. The whole recent SMR debacle keeps me a bit careful on buying those disks before extensively checking out all the specs.

Will news like this cause retail price drops anytime soon? Other advice is welcome too :-)

sphix0r··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Bought a 3d printer(Creality Ender 3, sub 200USD). Being able to print nice prints takes a lot of time and you'll learn a lot during the process.

After being able to print I tried drawing. Both blender and fusion 360. Blender for organic objects and fusion 360 for practical engineering objects.

It's a really fantastic hobby and you'll be able to produce a lot of physical objects instead of only writing software.

sphix0r··on WHO study on Covid-19: We estimated that the median of estimated R0 is 5.7
Based on Chinese data. I very much doubt the accuracy of Chinese data.
sphix0r··on Google Kubernetes Engine is introducing a cluster management fee on June 6
Hetzner is solid from a perf / price perspective. Mind that the network peering outside Europe is not that great. So could be a very good choice depending on your user base' location.
sphix0r··on Ask HN: How are you preparing for COVID-19 disruptions?
I always tend to have enough food at home that would last me two weeks easily. I would fill my bathtub in case things start to get more serious. That should be enough drinking water for some time.
sphix0r··on DisplayPort and 4K
> I'm an early adopter of 4k60. If you write code and you're not on 4k, you don't know what you're missing. 4k is great.

4K adds a lot of screen-estate. Having a "normal" 27" 4k screen, I recently worked on a ultra-wide curved screen. It blew me away. I can so much recommend curved screens over regular 4k screens. All you applications can fit next to each other on eye height.

sphix0r··on Ryanair, Hamiltonian Cycles, and using graph theory to find cheap flights (2018)
Thanks a lot! We use scrapy[1]. Our crawler's behavior is very polite so most of them won't block us. Easyjet for example is very strict against crawlers and will block most of them(and us).

sphix0r··on Ryanair, Hamiltonian Cycles, and using graph theory to find cheap flights (2018)
The only thing is that we have the crawl US airlines and support an additional currency(USD). So yes, there is no reason why this shouldn't work for North and South America. Do you think there is a market for this in America?
sphix0r··on Ryanair, Hamiltonian Cycles, and using graph theory to find cheap flights (2018)
We crawl the fare information ourself from the airlines'websites.
sphix0r··on Ryanair, Hamiltonian Cycles, and using graph theory to find cheap flights (2018)
We (me and a friend) did something similar for multi city round trips within Europe (https://tripchemy.com).

We created some data structures that allow almost instant searching of such routes and we have scrapers running regularly on Ryanair, easyJet, wizzair, and Transavia. You can query the algorithm here: https://algo.tripchemy.com/routes/TSF?year=2020&month=02&day...

It's based on the following Open source project which my friend made back in the day https://github.com/Whazor/Roundtrip

sphix0r··on Ask HN: What does your BI stack look like?
We built our own tool at Datastreams (https://datastreams.io) to collect data. We currently collect several thousands of events per second, mainly web data.

Events are mainly streamed to one of the following: Cloud buckets(S3, etc), HDFS, SQL-db or Cassandra.

Most clients use one of the following visualization tools: PowerBI, Qlik or Tableau.

Our clients are mid to enterprise size.

Disclaimer: I work at Datastreams

sphix0r··on Ask HN: How do you make sure your servers are up as a single founder?
Very well-thought infra and nice metrics. What kind of application are you running if I may ask?

sphix0r··on Show HN: Featmap – a user story mapping tool built with Go, React and TypeScript
Thanks! Seems very useful and clean enough to inform stake holders and the entire team.
sphix0r··on Eat less meat: UN climate change report calls for change to human diet
I'm a faster too and have more energy as well. No more energy drain after a big meal. Another advantage of fasting is that you spend less time on food. Our western society involves a lot of time on food(breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks).
sphix0r··on AMD Rome Second Generation EPYC Review: 2x 64-core Benchmarked
Yeah, I'm interested in those performance penalties as well.
sphix0r··on Ask HN: Go-to web stack today?
Depends on the project but I think React(and other JS frontends) are heavily overused. Nothing wrong with good old HTML sites. Think twice for falling into the SPA trap. Not saying SPAs are a bad choice.
sphix0r··on Ask HN: What do you use for authentication and authorization?
Currently integrating Keycloak as auth service for multiple existing projects. It's very advanced, many use cases and configurations are possible. We are in the middle of the migration but so far it hasn't been hard to integrate.

It's a rather large dependency so I won't recommend it for a single project with straight forward auth requirements.

sphix0r··on Pivotal CRISPR patent battle won by Broad Institute
thanks a lot!
sphix0r··on Pivotal CRISPR patent battle won by Broad Institute
I'm wondering, is there a hacker news for biohacking related stuff?

I have the feeling that there is a lot of progress being made in gene therapy technology these days. Having a friend who's life would be enhanced by gene therapy, I'm highly interested!

sphix0r··on Facebook moving away from React Native?
I have exactly the same experience(two years of RN).

Be conservative when adding dependencies, rather try to solve it yourself unless it's very complex and the dependency is well maintained.

Often dependencies will cause you problems when upgrading and many maintainers don't respect semver(could be a JS-ecosystem issue).

sphix0r··on Tor: 1100 relays still run end-of-life tor versions
There is, but it seems to be disabled by default.

sphix0r··on “Drupalgeddon2” touches off arms race to mass-exploit powerful web servers
This.

Most websites are mainly read only anyway. No need to throw in a programming language and store the data in a database.

The thing is, non-tech savvy people should be able to use(and deploy) and understand the static-web generators.
