spez··on Hipmunk for iPhone
We don't have Emirates at the moment. We should have the same prices as everyone else in the US, but we're still growing our international coverage.
spez··on Hipmunk Surfacing New $6 Million Round
Yeah, I hear you. If you can tell me the specific flight, I can probably explain. At this point, our prices should match.
spez··on Hipmunk Surfacing New $6 Million Round
The cost of just existing in this space is very high, let alone competing in it. We're a small operation now, but we've got a long way to go, and it won't be this way for long.
spez··on Hipmunk Surfacing New $6 Million Round
That may have been a fluke. Delta wasn't listed on Hipmunk for a day or so.
spez··on Hipmunk Surfacing New $6 Million Round
10 flights?!? Email alexis@hipmunk.com and demand swag.
spez··on Hipmunk Surfacing New $6 Million Round
Well, we have zero interest in selling for $10 million.

Alexis got someone to make it for us.

I really hate the way other sites have hidden calendars that pop-up. They all try to be too smart about it, and often ends up with me switching back and forth between mouse and keyboard. IMHO, some guy had a bad idea 10 years ago about how to do calendars, and everyone has been copying it since.

I think our version works really nicely if you know how it behaves. So, the challenge to us is to make its behavior more obvious.

Hipmunk's calendar has changed quite a bit since we launched, and I haven't heard much complaining lately. Maybe we just scared everyone away.

Good... keep thinking that.
spez··on Reddit Founders' YC Application
One requires significantly more overhead. Also, the whole thing about submitting, voting, and commenting came much later. Reddit didn't even have comments for the first 5 months or so.
spez··on Reddit Founder: “I Wish I Still Owned Reddit Now”
Actually, if reddit is truly self-sufficient, it's a relatively new development. Reddit was bought four years ago, and repeatedly told to not worry about money for the first 2.5 of those years and was accordingly not self-sufficient.

> Steve and Adam are hardly travel industry veterans.

Not for long!

spez··on You asked for it, HN: Hipmunk adds Multi-City Searching and more
Yes, you can share the URL of the results page*

*The results are stored in memcached and last ~24 hours. This will improve in the future.

spez··on You asked for it, HN: Hipmunk adds Multi-City Searching and more
We know how. It's just a matter of getting things together with our data providers.
spez··on You asked for it, HN: Hipmunk adds Multi-City Searching and more
Yes... right now you can just replace those inputs. It doesn't require any extra clicking or typing.
spez··on HN voting ring improvement
What?!? I challenge you to cheat something up successfully on reddit.
spez··on Why Reddit's Founder was "Terrified" to Launch New Startup, Hipmunk (YC S10)
A ton of people request this. We're working on it.
spez··on Startup Hipmunk offers dazzling new view of flight search
Favorite feedback of the day! Something that both makes sense AND is easy to do.
spez··on Startup Hipmunk offers dazzling new view of flight search
The good news is most of our work is done client-side, which scales quite nicely.
spez··on Startup Hipmunk offers dazzling new view of flight search
Similar visualization, but totally different products.

I think the most important feature we have is that we remove about 80% of results from listings because they're totally redundant.

We also have draggable time sliders, instant sorting, and multiple searches in tabs, all of which are things we added to make finding flights less tedious.

Also, you can't book tickets on matrix...

spez··on Startup Hipmunk offers dazzling new view of flight search
It's built entirely of secret sauce, incidentally. And Python.
spez··on Startup Hipmunk offers dazzling new view of flight search
CNN contacted us, but we launched with a fair amount of press from people we had relationships with (e.g. techcrunch, reddit), which is probably what led them to us.
spez··on Startup Hipmunk offers dazzling new view of flight search
It's just a custom Server header.
spez··on Reddit CoFounder Dips Back Into YC With Travel Startup Hipmunk (YC S10)
The visualization, yes, but there's a lot more to what we're doing than that. Better sorting, pruning out dominated flights (80% of results), trains, and time sliders, for example.

ITA is awesome, but their value isn't their interface so much as they supply the fare/availability data to practically everyone (Kayak, Orbitz, fly.com, and us, through via Orbitz).

If Dropbox doesn't want their questions answered, they shouldn't harangue people for up-votes.

spez··on Recommended Flaw: 31% of Digg Homepage submitted by 10 Users
A "top" link is a link that has been the hottest link on all of reddit at some point.

There isn't really an analogous concept on Digg since there is no notion of hottness and links don't rise and fall. Links just appear at the top of the front page at some point.
