specto··on The new warrant: how US police mine Google for your location and search history
I use home assistant with their android app. It can/does use google location services, however I believe you can also set it to use gps.
specto··on Samsung remotely disables TVs looted from South African warehouse
I've vowed not to buy samsung 3 times now, every time I've been burned. This time it's for real
specto··on FDA Approves First Covid-19 Vaccine
Yep, being obese definitely causes issues for others with weak immune systems just like covid.
specto··on FDA Approves First Covid-19 Vaccine
Yep just like I was required to get vaccines to go to school when I was younger and so was everyone else.
specto··on Apple enabling client-side CSAM scanning on iPhone tomorrow
I think a lot of people are missing why apple is doing this now. They're doing this because they have a fairly secure eco system. They have also create a proxy that makes it difficult (impossible according to them) to know the client. More than likely this was implemented so when it does go to congress, they can say look we implemented a system. Otherwise the DOJ will continue to push for no encryption or backdoor encryption. There's no winning here.
specto··on Valve Steam Deck
Probably not with the steam library
specto··on Valve Steam Deck
SSD is soldered in
specto··on Apple releases open source modules of Big Sur
It's interesting that because I said GPL instead of open source, my bad, I'm downvoted to -4. Shit.
specto··on Citing 'Censorship' Concerns, North Idaho ISP Blocks Facebook, Twitter
Agreed! But an ISP should be a dumb pipe, so this is wrong.
specto··on Apple releases open source modules of Big Sur
Just a release of their use of GPL code which the would be required to provide if requested anyways. It does not have any impact on Linux support.
specto··on Improving DNS Privacy with Oblivious DoH
I have blocked 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 and noticed some devices behave very badly, often crashing or restarting. Debugging the issue, once I removed the firewall rule they behaved normally. Almost all of the affected devices were google related, Android TV for example.
specto··on AMD CPU sales skyrocket with Ryzen 5000 launch, leaving Intel in the dust
Waiting to see what intel releases in response.
specto··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
750 employees with $350 million or more in revenue. It seems like they're just restructuring and using covid as cover. Maybe I'm wrong, but it kind of looks like that on the surface.
specto··on UniFi-Video Products End of Life Announcement
can you archive to NFS?
specto··on UniFi-Video Products End of Life Announcement
Wait really? UNMS only would devalue EdgeMax routers in a huge way...
specto··on UniFi-Video Products End of Life Announcement
In my opinion, that software is spaghetti code and barely functions when it's actually running. I tried it for a while, but gave up because it constantly lost the stream. I had to go to super low res for 3 cameras with a very low bitrate to make it run stable. I'm surprised someone like ubiquiti doesn't come out with an NVR with object detection built in.
specto··on New Lenovo ThinkPad Range with Ryzen 4000 and 4000 Pro Mobile
Yep same on the Gen 1, it's an awful machine.
specto··on Intel's flagship 10th-gen desktop CPU has 10 cores, reaches 5.3GHz
Not really... If you look at the FPS numbers, sure AMD is slightly lower. However AMD can also perform other functions like encoding/decoding. If you want pure FPS, sure Intel will win. For general computing AND gaming, AMD wins every time per dollar.
specto··on 1.1.1.1 for Families
Check out nextdns (pi-hole like service)
specto··on Soli Radar-Based Perception and Interaction in Pixel 4
Cool but completely useless on my phone.
specto··on Essential shutting down after failing to launch ‘GEM’ smartphone
Yeah, I turned on my PH-1 yesterday after using the Pixel 4xl for some time. The PH-1 is still by far my favorite, both the form factor and fingerprint unlock. RIP
specto··on Amazon, Apple, Google, and the Zigbee Alliance to develop connectivity standard
Don't you think delusional is a bit strong... There is a real company, nabu casa, hiring real developers to work on making a 1.0 release that's easy for others to use. Yeah right now it's complicated, but check out some of the projects they're working on like stanford's almond integration. https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2019/11/20/privacy-focuse...
specto··on Amazon, Apple, Google, and the Zigbee Alliance to develop connectivity standard
At least for the ecobee, hass can add it as a local homekit device
specto··on Ubiquiti adds phone-home to the access point firmware
Thanks, I have a lot of these rules already :)
specto··on Ubiquiti adds phone-home to the access point firmware
adding this to my edgerouter heh.
specto··on Restic – Backups Done Right
Actually you can use rclone as a backend to send your blocks to wherever rclone supports. quite nice.
specto··on Yubico launches its dual USB-C and Lightning two-factor security key
Check out solokeys, though they're doing a hardware revision for the usb-c since it was flimsy and some NFC changes due to power draw
specto··on Don’t Cheat on Interviews. It’s Obvious When You Do
This is very common in my phone screens
specto··on Lenovo Shipping Ubuntu Linux on 2019 ThinkPad
19.04 supports factorial but it's experimental.

I would've been much happier with the intel only version, the nvidia card is not worth it at all but at the time they didn't have 32gb of memory. Now the latest does, but too late.

specto··on Ice cold archive storage
I've been using duplicati for some time. It works ok, not perfect. Wish I could send backups to multiple locations especially (eg local/B2)
