spcmnspff··on Id Tech: Carmack’s Keynote In Full
One part that piqued my interest was Carmack's interest in using functional languages. Of course he goes on to say that it would be hard with people making the switch and all that after.

“It's not because people are no good. The very best programmers always make mistakes. This is something that I've really internalized; that, no matter how good you think you are, you are making mistakes all the time, and you have to have structures around you to try and help you limit the damage that your mistakes will cause, find them as early as possible, so that you can correct them, and the earliest possible time is at compile time. So I'm all about trying to be much more restrictive on what we can do, here. And on the one hand, I would entertain programming in—I'm very tempted to want to move to—a functional programming language; start programming in Haskell or OCaml or something, but that's not a credible thing to do in the game industry.”

spcmnspff··on Cartoonist Targeted With Criminal Probe For Mocking Police
Ah, my bad. Checked for submissions for only a few hours back; must have missed this one on my RSS.
spcmnspff··on Team Fortress 2 now free forever
Cheating through item drop mining with multiple accounts can't be done without paying for some in-game store item that makes the account a premium one, since free accounts can only be on the recieving end of a trade and have item restrictions (eg no hats).

If you mean the much more serious VAC-evasion by creating new accounts, they mentioned they would be cracking down on those, but no so sure about the specifics.

spcmnspff··on Most Australians will have their web access censored as of next month
http://blogs.abc.net.au/antonygreen/

Although the blog is focused on election analysis, which you may not want.

spcmnspff··on Facebook XSS Exploit [CODE][GIST]
I get this error message when I try to post it as a status:

spcmnspff··on Ask HN: What personal projects/goals are people working on for this summer?
My winter break is only about a month before I begin another semester of uni. I will try to do as much of the following as possible: - start going through SICP - learn python+django - read up on some of next semester's courses
spcmnspff··on Top Domains by Number of HN Submissions
Both TC and HN are interested in tech startups so I wouldn't be surprised if there were just people who submit on sight as they pop up on their rss feeds because of the karma on offer.
spcmnspff··on Run any Linux application natively on Windows (Vista and 7) without Cygwin
From what I read, you can get Debian and Gentoo system running with this.

http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/HOWTO_Gentoo_on_WINDOWS

http://www.debian-interix.net/

Would love to try get Gentoo but MSDNAA offers Professional rather than Ultimate.

spcmnspff··on Ask HN: Can you mimic this scroll behaviour for browser/OS?
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong, but can't you just middle click and move your mouse higher/lower than the marker makes it move constantly in that direction?
spcmnspff··on How to Make Mac OS X Get Weird
So basically this is Apple Store fun. Try: Open terminal, open screen, sleep 3000; while true; say "hilarious thing you want the Mac to say"; done Close terminal.
spcmnspff··on Ask HN: I versus We
I was told this, but only in the context of an essay.
spcmnspff··on Some fun mathematical puzzles
Anyone know how to do "Catching a spy"? Attempting it with someone I regard as a very good thinker; he is pretty adamant that it doesn't give enough information.
spcmnspff··on Stop procrastinating: Introducing the noprocrast gem
It should remove the noprocrast off feature. Make it easy to turn it on, but annoying to turn it off.
spcmnspff··on [dead]
Someone describe it for those that arrived after the 6 upvotes.
spcmnspff··on Pong written in both flash and HTML5. Left side is flash, right side is HTML5.
1005PE here (ie. also an Aton netbook). Flash side stutters for me, while HTML5 is smooth.
spcmnspff··on Please review my distro (if you are a musician)
The GNU is usually pronounced "gah-new" rather than "new".

http://www.gnu.org/events/rms-nyu-2001-transcript.txt "But, when it's the name of our system, the correct pronunciation is "guh-NEW" -- pronounce the hard "G". If you talk about the "new" operating system, you'll get people very confused, because we've been working on it for 17 years now, so it is not new any more. [Laughter] But it still is, and always will be, GNU -- no matter how many people call it Linux by mistake. [Laughter]"

spcmnspff··on "I wrote this film, and I am doing everything I can to prevent its release"
Ha, you got to that pseudonym before I could.

It could well possibly would have years ago but that name is now no longer a secret known pretty much only in the industry, so slapping it on the credits gives the impression that the movie is not worth watching.

spcmnspff··on Cx: A bash function for comfortable extraction of *.tar/*.tar.gz/*.tar.bz2
That looks really nice. I have something in my .$SHELLrc file that does something similar:

the extract_archive() in http://github.com/Rydgel/archlinux/blob/master/.zshrc

but yours looks like it takes care of other things like archives within archives.

spcmnspff··on CAPTCHArt
I've seen pretty much all of them; a lot of them are quite mediocre. This is one of the few good ones in my opinion:

spcmnspff··on MIT Video lectures - Introduction to Algorithms
You can get a lot of CS lecture series on Academic Earth including MIT's Intro to Algorithms:

http://www.academicearth.org/subjects/computer-science

There are other disciplines there too:

spcmnspff··on Essential Applications for Phd students
It doesn't mention Mendeley Desktop, which gets huge raves from a PhD student I know.
spcmnspff··on How do you deal with people who ask you to fix their computer?
I don't get asked that a lot, so unlike quite a lot or replies I read, I actually try to fix it most of the time!
spcmnspff··on Ask HN: please review my html5 web game
Very nice. Maybe I'm missing something but controlling two survivors is hard though, I lost him in a day.
spcmnspff··on How to Become a Programmer - wikiHow
I don't know many people that aren't going to be put off programming by that 1/2 to 1 year preparation on only theory.

A redeeming part of that page is that for each programming career, there is a decent list of useful pointers.

spcmnspff··on [dead]
But how is it going to integrate the magical stimulating experience with the magical iPad experience? A fleshlight and duct tape?
spcmnspff··on Broadcom open sources wireless drivers
Duplicate of http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1677832. Mine had original source as well.
spcmnspff··on The ad that uses YouTube brilliantly
I'm going off the ones in the comments: likes, cuts, dates, paints, football, drugs, watch, over, under
spcmnspff··on Hello World in amd64 Assembly
So are we getting hello world in all the flavours of assembly now? That or someone submit (or most likely _re_submit) http://www.roesler-ac.de/wolfram/hello.htm and get it over and done with.
spcmnspff··on Apple Ping: A Music Social Network, Like "Twitter And Facebook Meets iTunes"
I really wish Apple would split iTunes into various programs rather than the do-all music player/store/iDevice manager/an excuse to bundle a bunch of other Apple software and now it also provides a social network too. Or at least into modules that can be added to the vanilla player.

There's a problem when it runs worse than playing 720p video, Microsoft Office, or Firefox with quite a few tabs on an N450 netbook.

spcmnspff··on Full SICP Course Lectures [video]
If I recall correctly, the original is based on SICP 1st edition whereas the Berkeley lectures use the second edition. Another difference is that Berkeley's one has all the administrative stuff in it like tutorial arrangements and Brian Harvey asking if it was possible to pass the sheets around without reading it.
