spbaar··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
Excel does not need to be as opinionated or portable as a programming language. This might actually be a lesser of two evils considering what type of user behavior it encourages. (I've heard a similar ethos behind certain design decisions of Go)
spbaar··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
us-east-1 is finally looking pretty stable for once.
spbaar··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
I imagine it has to be for their expertise in translating developer intent into practice and refining the shopify specific markup conventions. When I misread the headline as Spotify I couldn't think of why any org, even very front end heavy, would buy them. But continuing to support a language that will always be in it's own lucrative domain makes perfect sense.
spbaar··on AirPods 5
The first airprods were so loose in the ear I thought the entire world was playing a prank on me when I tried them out.
spbaar··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
Thirst affects me in a different way too. My throat doesn't feel dry and uncomfortable because before it reaches that point I almost get naseous.
spbaar··on Project Valhalla, Explained: How a Decade of Work Arrives in JDK 28
I have such an urge to comment "lgtm" on the 197k line change PR
spbaar··on Antimatter has been transported for the first time
I make a pasta/antipasta joke every time I'm at an italian resteraunt and no one ever laughs :(
spbaar··on Fraud investigation is believing your lying eyes
This is a poor example though, because I don't think anyone got away with it? And it was viral, but not organized.
spbaar··on How we built Bluey’s world
That first run is pretty interesting because they clearly had the foresight to make things morally grey and the villians human. It's very clear they added some mustache twirling villiany to a few episodes as an afterthought. It's not even clear until like the last dozen episodes that Zeon is evil.

I know Gundam quality is a huge spectrum, but the 'sloppiness' of moral ambiguity in the first one is pretty great. Way too often (Z Gundam) they just do a timeskip and say "what if the good guys became bad after they won?"

spbaar··on U.S. pauses all military aid to Ukraine
It will be a withdrawal of US troops and bases with a wink wink. And nothing but impeachment can compel the president to actually respond to an article V call.
spbaar··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Actually i think it's the bottom fifth that have benefited the most from wage growth, with the low-six figure crowd getting the short end of the stick and having to pay more for burgers with the tight service labor market.
spbaar··on More advertisers halt spending on X in growing backlash against Musk
What is all the honor and glory in the world weighed against the siren's call of being a poster that people find funny?

spbaar··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
This is why the groupon CEO's firing letter remains undefeated

After four and a half intense and wonderful years as CEO of Groupon, I've decided that I'd like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding – I was fired today. If you're wondering why ... you haven't been paying attention.

spbaar··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
Im guessing an IC position? Still, being that senior I'd expect he's in quite a few meetings. I would love to hear how he manages his schedule and comes up with novel excuses.

If he really is coding 90% of the time though, more power to him.

spbaar··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
They might if other channels aren't saturated and things are still in flux. Kanye was unbanned yesterday. Do you think he's going to behave better or worse than before? If he behaves worse then that's another headline, another news cycle about whether he should be banned or not.

Right now the trend is advertisers getting more spooked because of unpredictability and Musk being unable to reassure them in calls he has been reported to have been on. I expect this trend to continue

spbaar··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
Window dressing projects might be a bit much, but in general it is curious that for all the noise Zuckerberg and Pichai have made about productivity, they don't really complain that the headcount is holding back a project or initiative. If I was on the board, I would be much more concerned that the org is not able to use the headcount to grow marketshare/topline/new lines of business more so than anything else.
spbaar··on I Fell 15,000 Feet and Lived (2009)
Didn't it also mention that a lot of survivors hit some type of slope?
spbaar··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
I've been a bit unemployed and bored so I've responded to a few of these to see what the angle is. There are also a bunch on telegram. Strangely, most do not push hard at all and drop off. They may mention crypto in passing but thats it. One time a scammer said hey can you help me an make an account for this crpyto scam website. When i said i did they said great and nothing else.
spbaar··on Are you a naïve realist?
Why does the proportion of votes being mail in matter?
spbaar··on Is the Russian Air Force incapable of complex air operations?
Plausible. We know a lot of front line conscripts are self sabotaging or slow walking their orders. and I think the air command showed some independence in 91 and was above the fray.

what incentives even exist in the Russian army? this is such a weird situation to extrapolate from

spbaar··on Psychogenic death, the phenomenon of “thinking” yourself to death
Hm, i was recently in a hospital room reading the pamphlets for grieving and soon to be grieving relatives and the "okay to let go" verbiage was actually recommended, although it was more directed at the family. It said it was much more common for family to be in denial, so please consult your doctor before saying goodbye i guess.
spbaar··on Is going to the office a broken way of working?
truth. went to a gyms happy hour and me and a girl were there alone otherwise everyone else went off in their groups of 3 or 4 they knew already lol.
spbaar··on Shipping Clubhouse on Android in ten weeks
Eye opening. I would have bet a million bucks they had the Android app in their back pocket but were holding off on launch until they perfected quality control or recommendation engine. There must have been some reason they're not telling

Everyone should be paid well, which imo means healthcare, retirement, and not crazy hours to pay for room and board. Utopia right?
spbaar··on Of 55 students in my class at Columbia’s Film program, 4 made a career out of it
and even if I decide to be a fan of an indie artist, unless I seek them out, the algorithm is constantly pushing me towards more popular things. I'm not going to open up Bandcamp instead of Spotify
