sparknlaunch12··on Hacker Newsletter - 100 issues and 10,000 subscribers
"hacker newsletter is not affiliated with y combinator in any way"

Glad that this is stated on the website. Given the colours and name you may think they are affiliated?

sparknlaunch12··on Couch hacking - A proof of Ikea's excellence
Ikea are absolutely brilliant. Some may have issues with their style or perceived quality however for price and flexibility they dominate.

Other companies are trying to mimic the flat pack business model. However the overall shopping environment, forcible furniture, warranties make them standout.

The sofa is just one example of adaptable furniture. One limitation though is their bed and mattress products. They have different dimensions (unique to ikea) and therefore you need an ikea mattress for a perfect fit.

sparknlaunch12··on Manhattanhenge
This is fantastic. For most people, this type of stuff goes unnoticed. However this is great. I think we should start compiling a list of similar alignments around the world?
sparknlaunch12··on Apple rejected Flattr… and it’s not the end
Unlucky you have been curtailed by Apple for now but sure you can rework your model to fit within what is allowable. Keep persevering as you seem to have built a useful application.
sparknlaunch12··on RIM rumored to lay off 2,000 more workers soon
HP announced 27k last week. Ericsson proposing 1.7k. Unsurprising those no longer at the top have to reduce their workforce. RIM has dropped the ball recently (two significant public blunders) and their tablet offering is terrible. Firms are considering using iPhone's instead of the popular Blackberry. Times are changing.
sparknlaunch12··on You should not follow me on Twitter
You really need a large existing online presence to make Twitter work effectively. We have found Twitter extremely difficult to create any real traffic or interest [1].

We have tried all the usual tips: follower those with similar interests, interact with others, ask people to follow etc etc It just doesn't work. Even when you gain followers (many are spam) they don't click through on links.

Add in all the noise on Twitter we struggle to know the true purpose of twitter.

sparknlaunch12··on Windows Live is dead
Microsoft's new venture So.cl <http://www.so.cl/>; has two log in options - Live and Facebook.

Unless Microsoft are using this as an opportunity to leverage Facebook user info on the MS platform, the days of Live may be soon over.

sparknlaunch12··on The THX Sound
Funny this blog post is from 2005. I use to have the THX sound play when logging into Windows (sad times).

The Music Thing blog has some other great posts about music and instrument hacks.

The reference to the C code is here:

"The score consists of a C program of about 20,000 lines of code. The output of this program is not the sound itself, but is the sequence of parameters that drives the oscillators on the ASP. That 20,000 lines of code produce about 250,000 lines of statements of the form "set frequency of oscillator X to Y Hertz".

sparknlaunch12··on Eurovision statistics: final predictions
What are twitter and the book makers predicting?
sparknlaunch12··on Towel Day - Don't forget your towel
Never heard of towel day. This may explain the guy on the bus who got on, towel only. Respect.
sparknlaunch12··on Eliciting emotion
Really like duck duck go and was impressed when I first heard about it on an interview podcast with the founder. Unsure why anyone would hold negative comments about a free tool that offers a nice alternative to google.

Keep up the good work Gabriel. There are many who appreciate the product.

sparknlaunch12··on HN Meetup Munich: May 2012
Cannot attend but are many German meetups held in German/English? Ie could you get by with speaking English only?
sparknlaunch12··on Someone has launched the same niche website idea as me. Do I abandon the idea?
Was google or Facebook first?

If you're passionate about the concept then push ahead. The fact you have one competitor (or more) just validates you have a market.

sparknlaunch12··on Ask HN: Anyone else in Adelaide, Australia?
Checkout the usual Meetup type sites and google but not sure how big the scene is in a Adelaide. Maybe you need to start your own? Startup or Hackathon Adelaide?
sparknlaunch12··on Interview with Sander Koppelaar (Silk)
Really interesting interview and product. Like how you can take various media types and compile them all smartly on a web page.
sparknlaunch12··on Show HN: We are the same, app for practicing compassion
Nice app. Who is the target market? Is this app backed up by any research?
sparknlaunch12··on The 892 unique ways to partition a 3 x 4 grid
That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
sparknlaunch12··on What You Need to Know about SEO
The author makes some easy to implement suggestions. However perfecting these methods takes time and skill. Growing traffic organically through SEO alone is tough. Kudos to those that do it well. However search engines are unforgiving on seo abuses.
sparknlaunch12··on Live: SpaceX Dragon docking with ISS
Remarkable. Three days after launch and they're about to hook up with a space station. One small step...
sparknlaunch12··on Facebook’s stock should trade for $13.80
So if we apply industry standard valuation techniques, tested against an existing listed tech company Facebook is valued at $13.80. Why did everyone buy it at more than double the price? Ouch.
sparknlaunch12··on Google removed 1m DMCA links last month, 540,000 at the behest of Microsoft
"Overall, Google received 1.24 million requests from 1,296 copyright owners for removal the past month. They targeted 24,129 domains."

Must be a full time job to fill out all those forms.

sparknlaunch12··on The 892 unique ways to partition a 3 x 4 grid
Really great image however I was confused by one comment on the page suggesting there are more than 892 variations.

"I was confused at first because so many partitions are not on the poster. I see that this poster has culled horizontal and vertical symmetries, but the entry is titled “the 892 unique ways to partition a 3×4 grid.” Given this, I think a poster with all 3,164 partitions would have been (counter intuitively) more elegant. Or if the poster had just been titled “892 unique ways to partition a 3×4 grid.”

sparknlaunch12··on First Retire... Then Get Rich
The fictional example forgets to factor in unexpected health costs, emotional distress from no close family and living in a shack in a war torn village.

Okay, slight over exaggeration but anyone could retire early. However it takes sacrifice. It usually involves living away from your family and living in a second/third world country. It assumes you have no unplanned costs (health, weather...). Not terrible but worth considering before quitting your job.

sparknlaunch12··on How Tim Cook is changing Apple
Just heard a podcast with Adam Lashinsky. He is the Senior Editor at Fortunate magazine and author of a book on Apple. In the podcast:

"[Lashinsky] shares an insider look at Apple, one of the world's most iconic and secretive companies. Based on his research into the technology giant's internal processes and approaches to leadership and building products, Lashinsky offers insights and surprises from his book, Inside Apple: How America's Most Admired--and Secretive--Company Really Works."

Cook was the supply chain guru Jobs employed to turn Apple's supply chain model into one like Dell's. No surprise with this knowledge Cook is now CEO of Apple.

sparknlaunch12··on Introducing Facebook Camera
Agree the comments supporting Facebook's fragmented strategy of introducing new separate apps.

To compete with Microsoft, Apple, Google you need a platform (OS and phone). While Facebook messenger didn't really take off, photos may be more of a popular transition as many send photos to Facebook anyway.

I feel that the mobile app market will mature along the same lines as computer software. Eventually the majority of users will want a simple experience of picking up a phone without having to make choices in an 'store' environment.

sparknlaunch12··on Introducing Facebook Camera
Agree with this statement. To compete with Microsoft, Apple, Google you need a platform (OS and phone). While Facebook messenger didn't really off, photos may be more of a popular transition as many send photos to Facebook anyway.
sparknlaunch12··on Meet the tireless entrepreneur who squatted at AOL
Great story and lucky for Eric he wasn't locked up in prison. Worth noting he was involved in an earlier project at AOL and they hadn't deactivated his pass. A without this things may have gone the other way.

I think Gates and Jobs spent nights at places they were working at, leveraging off free to use, latest technology.

His startup idea is great. There are variations out there already but maybe this story and network will turn this into something successful.

sparknlaunch12··on Facebook Shows There's a Sucker Born Every Minute
I am all for justice but this type of behaviour happens all the time. It has just made the front page news because of retail investors discovering shares go down (as well as up). I know this message will get down voted but the financial markets are a fickle place. Sorry.
sparknlaunch12··on My Encounter With a Patent Troll
Eeek, good article. This is something government needs to step in and help with. However curious of the patent troll letters to ignore and not ignore?

For example, if you don't pay your mortgage and ignore letters from the bank, you eventually lose your home. So you would legally need to respond to some solicitation, no matter how trivial.

sparknlaunch12··on How Tim Cook is changing Apple
Completely tough job to follow in the foot steps of big figure like Jobs. You wish Cook all the best in the new role. If he succeeds, Jobs will get the credit for leaving a strong legacy. If he fails, he can only be g forgiven for not being Steve Jobs.

Nevertheless what a fantastic opportunity to be involved with a leading company.
