spaniard89277··on Harnessing heat from wastewater
I guess paying outside normal working hours it's extra money that adds up?
spaniard89277··on Tinygrad 0.8.0 Release
I'm just self-learner and I know how bad PR JS has here, but it would be nice to have more LLM/ML tools in the Node ecosystem, because when everything is in python is just another tech stack I have to consider if I want to build something web.

If you have money and hands at your disposal it might not sound much, but for people like me building stuff solo, it's problematic.

spaniard89277··on A new type of device, a pocket companion
I have only two pockets in my trousers.
spaniard89277··on You Don't Need More Resilience. You Need Friends. and Money
Stress is neccessary to grow and even to keep going, I'm with you in that. But I think the article is right in pointing out that there's too much focus into some inner force that makes you accomplish everything.

This has been going for a while, and coupled with other factors, I don't think it's paying good dividends. I think that everyone paying attention can see the steep increase in depression and medication. It's not only the US, it's happening in Europe too.

My impression is that we're removing people from their support networks, manufacturing lonely individuals, and eroding their financial float line through housing.

I don't think mental thoughness or resilience can overcome this for too long, and many people is exposed to this stressors for many, many years, if not their entire life.

Even Taleb, who is really tiresome talking about stress, recognizes that stress is only useful if it is more or less bounded.

spaniard89277··on Tech Hubs Are Losing the Talent War to Everywhere Else
I think you're looking for distributism and georgism.
spaniard89277··on Tech Hubs Are Losing the Talent War to Everywhere Else
Sillicon Valley pulls you in because the amazing career opportunities you have there, and pushes you out because of the insane land/housing situation, and how everyone around you who's not IT is miserable.

It's "funny" to see how many places that deem themselves a progressive yet they fail so hard to tackle the very basics of poverty.

Living in a place where I can get 200k as a white collar while many others have to live in tents because despite being workers can't afford more, it's my idea of dystopia.

An average blue collar should be able to afford rent or buy a small place. If that's not possible in the place you live in, then you're living in a dystopian place.

spaniard89277··on The Closing of the Bulgarian Frontier
Always remember this site is full of western liberals. Just stating your worldview is subject to moderation.
spaniard89277··on Fireworks: Function Calling Model and API
Please stop posting in Medium, it's so annoying.
spaniard89277··on "CSS is dramatically more difficult than learning assembly language" [audio]
I don't understand either. I understand that CSS can be tricky sometimes, but more difficult than Assembly? Well, admittedly I have no idea of assembly or pretty much anything outside of your typical web stack, but it seems more difficult to me from the distance.

Not to mention game devs doing GPU stuff. I regret committing to programming with 30yo, in my 20s I probably would have the time and energy to learn much more.

spaniard89277··on Ask HN: Daily practices for building AI/ML skills?
I only have old hardware at home. How viable is to practice this stuff on my own projects (and I'd like to touch JS as much as possible, despite everyone being on python)
spaniard89277··on Spain expels two US spies for infiltrating secret service
It's clear for many spaniards that the US is playing against us. The whole deal with Algeria, Morocco and Israel is pretty shady to say the least.

I don't have our secret services in high regard, but I expect them to at least do something to defend our interests.

spaniard89277··on 'Energy independent' Uruguay runs on 100% renewables for four straight months
Well, biogas exists. I mean, someone could try to turn waste into biogas at scale. AFAIK Germany is the country that produces more biogas and they are far from having it cheap or at scale. In fact sometimes they just turn crops into energy...
spaniard89277··on 'Energy independent' Uruguay runs on 100% renewables for four straight months
It's a disgrace that we're not able to buy cheap and light cars in the EU anymore. I just want a ~2010 Fiat Panda :(
spaniard89277··on Solar energy storage breakthrough could make households self-sufficient
Tell me when it's in production and I can see a price listed somewhere.
spaniard89277··on Grist is a modern, relational spreadsheet
This one is very interesting, thanks for sharing.
spaniard89277··on EU-funded report calls for wealth of super-rich to be taxed, not income
Hello
spaniard89277··on We have used too many levels of abstractions
Im from the new breed. I'd like to know all that but, where do I get the money? It's not like I can spend so much time tinkering without producing.

If at least was able to purchease a home I wouldnt have this pressure.

I guess in the US is different because people have higher salaries.

You have to have the time/resources to dive that deep. Or maybe it's your job, line some of the folks in a local company that work in hard problems.

But even they are not that well payed.

spaniard89277··on Inflated rents, high interest and lack of supply create European housing crisis
A hand in your left pocket to pay their pension. A hand in your right pocket to pay your rent.

You'll get public debt to pay, poverty and the climate crisis to deal with.

The social contract is broken. No wonder violence is on the rise.

Guess this generations didn't really do the math, it seems they think they'll be dead soon.

spaniard89277··on Web Scraping with Node.js
I've found Apify really handy. They have crawlee too, but didn't try it yet.
spaniard89277··on In a Git repository, where do your files live?
Git may solve real problems but honestly, it's a PITA to use. Just for basic tasks needs quite a lot time sink to understand what's going on and what do you need to do.

It gets in the way of the workflow IMO.

spaniard89277··on Pooling and Sharing of wealth makes everyone's wealth grow faster
In Spain healthcare is managed at regional level. My region is clearly ahead of the average in this regard (despite the amount of elderly people we have) and it's clearly not a breeze.

To the point that I use the private healthcare quite often.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for the public service, Hospitals are superb and it will allways be there in case of an emergency, but this is mostly a site of US readers and I think we're misleading here. Our public systems are not a walk in the park either.

I won't get bankrupt, that's for sure. But I have to pay pocket/insurance if I want to get something done quickly and I'm not like, dying or something.

This is not precisely a good approach for prevention care.

spaniard89277··on How South Korea’s birth rate dropped below Japan’s
In Spain there's no institutional pressure, but peer pressure. I'm expected to have children and pay +1/2 of my income in rent, have little savings, etc.

I'm pretty much an average spaniard in financial terms.

Climate change frightens me too.

I mean, If I had children I would have fear for their future and I would be completely ruined financially.

But it seems this is completely incomprehensible to older generations that wonder why youngster complain about getting hands in their pocket trough rent, pensions, debt, etc.

spaniard89277··on Absurd Success
My GF is a designer and she always says that the problem is that nobody test anything. I've been helping with a project for her client and pretty much everything went on the fly.

I was able to spot obvious flaws in the design, she agreed but said that she had no time and such is life.

spaniard89277··on Blocking Entire Countries from Your Website for Better Traffic – Opinion
Beware by blocking by IP. Many IP databases are outdated or wrong. This can be seen in Spain where DIGI (a romanian ISP) users have som troubles because of this. Some services see a romanian user instead of a spanish one.
spaniard89277··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
If I had a small-medium company I would hand out money for renting coworking spaces. If enough people do this, coworking spaces will pop up more and more and compete to get the best deals. People who wants to WFH can pocket the difference and those who crave for socialization will have a place for such.

A large company can probably do that with smaller offices or with setting up the coworking spaces themselves and renting the spaces left without occupants.

spaniard89277··on Web Scraping via JavaScript Runtime Heap Snapshots (2022)
No but maybe you want to do something with the ocr output.
spaniard89277··on Web Scraping via JavaScript Runtime Heap Snapshots (2022)
You'll be spending resources on LLMs like crazy. Possible but very messy IMO.
spaniard89277··on Web Scraping via JavaScript Runtime Heap Snapshots (2022)
But what if their backend blocks you? I'm trying to develop a instagram scraper and I find that I'll have to spend money on rotating proxies.

It doesn't matter if you scrape the DOM or get some Json.

I just need to scrape some public account posts and, I may be dumb, but I dunno how to do that with the official APIs (developers.facebook is hard to understand for me).

spaniard89277··on The back-to-office backfire: Companies ending WFH perks lose out on top talent
Companies hoping people forgot how nice it felt living in a nicer place and not commuting.

Being able to close my laptop, walk down to the beach and meet my friends is not something I will forget easily, nor something I want to trade for living in Madrid or Barcelona for a few peanuts more.

spaniard89277··on Google’s return-to-office push reportedly has a $99 hotel for workers
Companies, specially this ones with so much profit and high salaries, will eventually have to accept that there's no way around housing and politics.

It doesn't matter what you do. If moving to your place feels miserable you'll have churn.

Maybe Google can deal with this with some gymnastics for a while but if people around google employees keep getting poorer and more miserable, life for googlers will be miserable too, doesn't matter how many perks and colors their campus has.

I guess FAANG will eventually try to silo people in their campuses with their own housing, but either way it affects the bottom line of the economy, so you'll be affected in many ways.

Housing is not just another problem. Georgists, Piketty & critics, etc.

It will tank the west (and particularly europe).
