spadros··on The sisters “paradox” – counter-intuitive probability
Yes, I found this one easy. Was surprised my data management intuition came back after all these years since school. There’s really only three options:

- boy - boy

- boy - girl

- girl - girl

So it must be 1/3 chance. If you’re looking at permutations in order, that’s a different question.

spadros··on Show HN: Whittle – A shrinking word game
It’s solvable if you whittle down to “a”
spadros··on Show HN: Whittle – A shrinking word game
Really fun! Could use a hint function though. I got %100 of all words on Aug 4 but still have not found a way to get it down to zero letters. If anyone has figured it out please let me know!
spadros··on Show HN: Whittle – A shrinking word game
I’m stuck on that one too! Got 100% of all possible words but cannot figure out how to reduce to zero. A “show hint” feature would be nice when you’re stuck.
spadros··on Decades-long bet on consciousness ends
I agree with your sentiment that animals and maybe even plants can experience sentience. But that’s a far, far, faaaar cry from what ChatGPT is and is capable of. We don’t have “general” AI yet. ChatGPT’s intelligence is very narrow; it generates written content. That’s about it. I believe a lot of people are overhyping it this way.
spadros··on Decades-long bet on consciousness ends
Bing and ChatGPT are both narrow AIs. They don’t have feelings or any real understanding of self. They simply generate text. You can ask it about itself, but anything it generates doesn’t have any real meaning, as it’s just making it up semi-randomly.
spadros··on Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
Probably the communication devices were blown off by the shockwave in the case of an implosion. It’s absolutely possible to have communications with the surface at this level; Trieste from the bottom of Mariana Trench was able to communicate back up to surface. That was 3x deeper and the early 60s.
spadros··on Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
My thoughts exactly. They should be doing a deep inspection of the hull before and after every dive. RTM sounds good until you have a failure at 10000 ft down and die instantly. “We detected a failu -“ and then you go boom.
spadros··on Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
So much skimming here eh. The whole trip can take 8 days, from launching on a ship to take you out to sea. The actual dive itself is supposed to be 12 hrs from “bolts on” pre dive to “bolts off” getting out of the sub. 8 hrs underwater, not 8 days.
spadros··on Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
Seems like they’re going to get sued if the passengers and crew aren’t saved. Possibly even if they are saved. Maybe the contract they get people to sign is tight enough, but everything I’ve read so far seems like they were a bit reckless. They don’t have to inspect their hull for issues every dive; they have real time monitoring of the health at all times! We just pop them back up when we discover an issue…

But what if that issue is detected at a depth at which nothing can be done? At a depth where death is imminent no matter what? The thing is held together with RV lights and a crappy Logitech controller from Amazon. What else have they elected to skimp on?

The “why Titan isn’t classed” page is hilarious too. They mention of the 25 pre checks they have, the majority are for surface operations, not underwater operations. Does not give one confidence and reads like a joke after this debacle.

The Trieste dive to the bottom of Mariana Trench were able to use voice communications from the sea floor. Should be possible from Titanics depths then, seeing as Mariana’s is 3x deeper. Assuming the sub hasn’t already imploded, that is.
spadros··on Steam Now Offers 90-Minute Game Trials
They’re saying they might pass 14 days since purchase if the download wastes their time to test it on the free night.
spadros··on Notes on rarely-seen game mechanics
I read it more as you undo their last move and your last move. Then you can replay and hopefully not fall into the same trap.
spadros··on Writing: Good career move, terrible career (2018)
The point is it’s incredibly hard to get the the good work. It’s not bad, if you can survive the insane competition. Which most, by definition, cannot.
spadros··on Writing: Good career move, terrible career (2018)
I disagree with your premise. There’s masterful tech docs and terrible fan fiction. Comparing one to a barn and the other to Van Gogh is meaningless.
spadros··on Writing: Good career move, terrible career (2018)
I wouldn’t compare technical writing and fiction writing as painting a barn to painting a Van Gogh. It’s a bit hyperbolic. There’s masterfully written technical docs and terrible Sherlock Holmes erotica. I wouldn’t compare the Holmes Erotica to Van Gogh.
spadros··on Study finds elevated levels of toxic metals in some juices and soft drinks
I buy my 2Ls for $1 on sale. $30 a month for pop is very affordable. RE your health; the components of diet pop are some of the most studied and consumed chemicals and sweeteners on the planet. The worst thing it’ll do is possibly wear your tooth enamel. So, I’d say it’s fine for their health and wallet.
spadros··on Merino Wool: The Good, the Bad, and the Not-So-Stylish
Machine wash hot or cold is fine for merino. It’s the drying on anything but low heat that ruins it.
spadros··on Merino Wool: The Good, the Bad, and the Not-So-Stylish
Yeah, this blog post is mostly opinionated drivel mixed with false statements. Not based on facts at all. It’s like the author chose to talk about something they knew nothing about and didn’t even bother to do real research.
spadros··on Merino Wool: The Good, the Bad, and the Not-So-Stylish
Seems highly opinionated and not based on fact. IE a typical low quality blog post.

Plus, most people don’t wear 100p merino. It’s usually a blend with other materials to help combat the so called “problems” described.

My blended, mostly merino hiking socks are incredibly soft while still being incredibly durable and quick drying. Also prevent blisters unlike anything else.

In a nutshell, this post is mostly drivel.

spadros··on The End of Love
Maybe. I’d say this:

If you think one guy is an asshole, he’s probably an asshole. If you think everyone is an asshole… It’s time to do some hard introspection.

spadros··on The End of Love
Yes me too. I’d guess that the average man on OLD sees more rejection in a month than the average woman will in her lifetime. It’s a tough dating world for the average straight man. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Maybe a potential remedy is for straight men to move back to predominantly hitting on people in real life in the hopes of finding a woman not on OLD. OLD is only making the straight women on their platforms more repugnant, and really doesn’t provide high quality or quantity for the average man.

spadros··on The End of Love
I think comparing OLD to big Casinos is incredibly reductive.

I also think you’re bending my words into a straw man. If I had to play this game, the better answer would be “it’s an addictive gambler’s responsibility to keep out of casinos, or set a limit and stay within it”.

An addict has problems with alcohol. It’s their responsibility to deal with it. The fallout in their life is their responsibility to handle, nobody else’s.

A bipolar person can’t control their moods. It’s still their responsibility to deal with the fallout of manic episodes and try to stabilize their mood. Eventually most bipolar have the ability to recognize that they are at the centre of the broken relationships in their life and act upon that knowledge for the positive.

She’s either already vain and entitled or became repugnantly vain and entitled through OLD. It’s her responsibility to deal with that. The article reads like someone trying to bury the fact that they are at the centre of their suffering.

I agree tolerance and willingness to settle are key attributes to a happy and long lasting relationship. She seems to have neither in spades.

spadros··on The End of Love
Vain and narcissistic. Expects perfection from her partners despite being twice divorced and having kids already. Can’t take ownership for her problems and blames the “system”, as you say. No gratitude, tolerance, empathy, or non-judgement.
spadros··on The End of Love
Online dating may make women more vain and entitled. It’s still her responsibility to recognize that bias and work against it. If she truly wants a partner, at least. Otherwise it’s hard to have sympathy for someone inundated with choice who has rejected people for liking Starbucks and Marvel movies. Especially when she herself has been divorced twice and already has kids. She isn’t exactly a prime fruit, but she seems to expect a perfect man in return. If she had some empathy, gratitude, tolerance, and non-judgement, I’m sure many of those 100+ men would have been great partners.
spadros··on The End of Love
Articles like this make me incredibly depressed. It seems common place now to see blog posts written by women saying “woe is me, I’ve dated a crapton of men and get so much attention, but I can’t find the one”. If women become this entitled and vain from online dating, the dating pool is only going to stagnate more. If the author could practice some tolerance, empathy, gratitude, and non-judgement, I’m sure many of those 100+ men could have been great partners. As it is, I have no sympathy for her. Her stories make me nauseous.

What’s even worse is she’s been twice divorced and already has kids, but expects a perfect man in return. It’s hard to have empathy when she’s rejecting people based on Marvel movies and Starbucks.

spadros··on The End of Love
Agreed. Put another way, she’s acting entitled and vain. If she could practice some tolerance, gratitude, empathy, and non-judgement, she might be able to find love. As it is, I read this as an entitled woman expecting the world to come to her.
spadros··on The End of Love
I disagree. She seems entitled and vain. I’m sure many of those 100+ men would have been great matches if she would have only put the effort in, been more tolerant and less judgemental.
spadros··on The End of Love
This. She seems entitled and vain. Or only is attracted to vain narcissists herself. Either way, it’s a her problem.
spadros··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
Stories like this make me think tipping should be abolished more. I feel bad for the other less charismatic servers. Just get rid of tips and pay them higher across the board.
