spaceprison··on A few things to try with DALL·E
I want to see this combined with something like ai dungeon.
spaceprison··on Operation Jumbo Drop: How sending large packets broke our AWS network
9216 is the typical supported mtu for ethernet. But earlier iterations of their network used devices whose jumbo mtu length was like 9100 bytes.

Aws uses A LOT of different overlay technologies which are implemented through encapsulation(aka overhead).

To enable cross region vpc connectivity, additional encryption and encapsulation can be layered on top of the existing encapsulation.

9001 bytes was the absolute max they could give to customers and still be able to do packet shenanigans.

spaceprison··on Running BGP in large-scale data centers
At FB/AMZN scale its really tough to accurately emulate/virtualize the network, these are deep clos fabrics with LOTS OF STATE. At best you can get a sense of what protocols might/should do, but at the end of the day the state of the real environment isn't present.

So that micro-loop you created with your new policy that you observed in the lab turns in to a wave of micro-loops in real life because some random router was slow to update due to load.

spaceprison··on Facebook will start putting ads in Oculus Quest apps
I would have one if it weren't for the fb requirement and this outcome is exactly why I don't.

Are people actually shocked that a company with such a pristine reputation for carrying about their produ..um..Users now wants to jam ads directly into their eyes?

spaceprison··on Show HN: Tool that turns your images into plotter-like line drawings
Number 5 here
spaceprison··on Show HN: Three Things Daily – Make gratitude a daily habit
This is anecdata but I know a lot of people that AA has worked for (tens of years of sobriety) attribute a portion of their success and sanity on doing a daily gratitude list.
spaceprison··on Why security and engineering don't get along
In my experience the reason stems from the fact that the interaction with security typically manifests itself in the form of an inquisition/audit where a series of 'what ifs' and increasingly implausible corner cases (without solutions, time or budget) get dropped in the engineers lap to 'make work'.

Security leaves the meeting with mission accomplished, Engineers leave the meeting with pile of new work and less time to do it.

spaceprison··on Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Robinhood
I think the notion of a scheme here is what's debatable.

The risk was there when these funds shorted 140% of the stock. Retail folks noticed the potential for a naturally occurring squeeze and shared the info with world.

spaceprison··on How I talk to the victims of conspiracy theories
Over the 2.5 years the number of conspiracy theories coming from my father in-law has increased dramatically. Initially I tried debunking them but that didn't work and often made things hostile.

What I've found helps keep things civil is to have a real dialog.

These ideas are shallow and built on soft ground, let them shoot the crazy idea out there, ask clarifying questions and peel the onion.

spaceprison··on How the Sacklers shifted $10.8B of an opioid fortune built on OxyContin
The fact that they may be of Jewish heritage and are being criticised doesn't make the quote anti-semitic.

This family made billions as opium dealers whose impact has been seen nationwide. But since it was 'just business' they get to turn a blind eye to the impact.

I understood the quote to be a comment on the idea that once morality free enrichment becomes codified into law what would seem to be morally 'wrong' is justified and even looks 'good' since what they are doing is legal.

spaceprison··on The greatest privilege we never talk about: beauty
Sure, identifying these inequalities is a step in making things 'more equal' but how does society correct something that is arguably biological in nature (our preference for beauty)?

Masks? A government backed hotornot.com that issues beauty bonus points to improve ugly hiring outcomes?

People who are good with numbers approach financial situations from a position of privilege, surely that's an equality killer? Do we impose Financial acuity tarrifs in addition to standard taxation?

Obviously these are absurd examples but there is a point of diminishing returns and even negative outcomes in the pursuit of TOTAL equality.

spaceprison··on Cahokia's rise parallels onset of corn agriculture
I grew up in St. Louis County and Cahokia mounds was a favorite field trip in school.

If you have the opportunity it's a really cool place.

spaceprison··on Emotionally Expressive Text to Speech
My daughter is dyslexic and would love to play things like stardew valley, pokemon or even animal crossing but being text only makes them such a slog for her.

The same goes for sub titles, she'd be perfectly fine with a robot voice for the actors if they sounded real enough like this.

Game changer.

spaceprison··on Harvard professor placed on leave after report details his connection to Epstein
More and more it seems like the corporation/organization is taking the conceptual role of the state in the USA.
spaceprison··on JPMorgan’s small business loans instead went to its biggest customers
At some point I feel like we moved from 'deregulation and open markets' to a federal plutocrat enshrinment and oligarch protection program.

This behavior will not change because of a single election for a handful of seats 6 months away.

There was talk of a constitutional convention back in 2016 and I think it's time to think about how regular folks can recapture the direction of the nation.

spaceprison··on Show HN: To fight quarantine boredom I build a site to watch movies with friends
Great idea!

My wife was just doing this with a friend in st Louis over text.

spaceprison··on WHO Changes 'Social Distancing' to 'Physical Distancing'
I have been thinking "blood circle" this whole time!
spaceprison··on The Groceries That No One Wants to Panic-Buy
To me stocking up means less trips out. What's the point of quarantine if you're still doing a weekly shopping trip?
spaceprison··on Pointless work meetings 'really a form of therapy'
This was such an interesting read thanks for posting it!
spaceprison··on Pointless work meetings 'really a form of therapy'
This explains so much!

I was recently working on an infrastructure deployment with a team in Sweden and those of us from the US could not understand why everything took a commitee to do anything outside the norm.

Like, no individual would just do a task or make a command decision unless a broader team was engaged.

The work got done but, yeesh.

spaceprison··on Censorship in China Allows Govt Criticism but Silences Collective Expression [pdf]
These sound like the same thing.
spaceprison··on Anxiety Looks Different in Men
This is a great article. For years I didn't know how to handle anxiety so I handled it "like a man" which lead to a pretty decent drinking habit.

Now that I've stopped drinking and being open about what's going on with me, my anxiety looks like traditional anxiety which was easy for my gp to help diagnose.

Taking the leap to be open and get help was the best thing to happen to me in years.

spaceprison··on Ask HN: Scripts/commands for extracting URL article text? (links -dump but)
I don't know if a specific script but you might be able to make something with python using the requests, beautifulsoup and markdownify modules.

Requests to fetch the page. beautifulsoup to grab the tags you care about (title info) and then markdownify to take the raw html and turn it into markdown.

spaceprison··on If work dominated your every moment would life be worth living?
With a question in the title, I foolishly read this hoping it may contain a hint toward a way to make work-as-life feel less soul-sucking or offer a way off the treadmill.

Instead I had the pleasure of reading a paper that talks about a "hypothetical" scenario that encapsulates my and countless others daily, anxiety ridden waking nightmare of an existence whose only off-ramp is severence, retirement or death.

So, to answer the authors question;

If work dominated your every moment would life be worth living?

No, but what choice do you have?

spaceprison··on Penn Jillette fasts 23 hours a day to maintain his 100lb weight loss
I lost 100lbs about 10 years ago (from 320 - 220) but after years of vigilance its hard not to find the lifestyle exhausting.

This is due mainly to the fact that this type of lifestyle is not compatible with American culture. Going against the grain is easy early on when the results are fresh, but 10 years in its a slog. I want to eat like everyone else but my experiments doing so even once a week can result in gain.

Food is everywhere here and people often take your choice to not indulge personally. What's worse is having a previous image of "an eater" means people double down on wanting you to "have more / try some". It's a society of pushers.

It is a massive change and unless you've gone full narcissist (insta, fb, celebrity) all you have supporting your "choice" is you.

spaceprison··on Penn Jillette fasts 23 hours a day to maintain his 100lb weight loss
Svelte is a pretty common way to describe being in good shape.
spaceprison··on The Coming Ice Age (1958)
I think there's something here, just like how you stop liking new music.

There were a bunch of articles in the 70s talking about the potential of an ice age. So much so that I remember my dad (69yo) talking to me and my brother about global cooling/ice age when we were kids in the 80s.

He bought the articles in his 20s but now can't be bothered by climate change, because "it was just cooling 40 years ago..."

spaceprison··on Black Missouri drivers 91% more likely to be stopped
Being from the Saint Louis area these numbers are just confirmation of a trend that most folks see play out daily.

There's a weird municipal dynamic that I think contributes to this. STL city and county are broken into tons of small municipalities each with their own police force, many of these towns derive a decent portion of their operating budget through ticket writing. This coupled with a fairly segregated metro area all but guarantees that if you look even remotely "out of place" you're getting pulled over and, as they say, you're "getting paper".

It's a real shame too, it was a decent place to live, there's great free museums, decent music scene, cost of living is low etc.

But the only national stats the place has going for it is "highest per capita murder rate" and now a multiyear trend of an absurdly high likelihood of getting stopped if your a PoC.

spaceprison··on Sign In With Apple is a big win for online privacy
A verifiably tracking free anonymous Auth service provided by the likes of duckduckgo or eff would be news/privacy worthy.

But this celebration of having the opportunity to give your info directly to a different faceless megacorp is beyond me.

spaceprison··on Self-distancing can help you make better decisions
With all due respect, you're wrong.

In AA there is celebration around milestones (first days, then months then years of sobriety) and there is some discussion of past drinking. You'll often see a lot of both in movies, newcomer meetings or early treatment.

But substance abusers are selfish so a core function of working an aa program aside from trying to help others quit (objectively using ones own experience to help another) is actively taking inventory of past and present resentments, fears and selfishness to determine "what was/is your role in X?" and then making an amend to correct the wrong.
