souvlakee··on Dubai to Tel Aviv flight made emergency landing due to fight between pilots
The conflict was described as a “jihadi terror attempt.” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said this, as reported by The Times of Israel.

“Based on our initial information, the terrorist [the second pilot] intended to bring down the aircraft together with all passengers,” Gallant said. He added that the disaster was prevented only because several Israeli passengers took action. “They stormed the cockpit, neutralized the terrorist and returned control of the plane to the other flight crew on board,” the minister said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that most passengers on the flight were Israeli. He added that after the emergency landing, Saudi authorities detained the second pilot, and he continues to be questioned.

Earlier, sources within Israeli officials told Reuters anonymously that, according to Israel’s current assessment, the incident was a terror attempt, not a matter of any pilot’s mental health issues.

souvlakee··on Dubai to Tel Aviv flight made emergency landing due to fight between pilots
TL;DR: On September 30, a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. About an hour and a half after take‑off, the aircraft transmitted code 7700 (general emergency), which later changed to code 7500 (hijack). At the same time the plane deviated from its route and dropped sharply, losing half its altitude in less than a minute. Israel scrambled fighters, fearing a possible terror attack. The aircraft re‑established contact and landed safely at Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia.

An anonymous Israeli official told Reuters that a fight broke out among the pilots. Passenger Miriam told i24News that she first heard shouting from the cockpit, then the cockpit door opened and passengers saw a lot of blood. She said the pilot was wounded with a knife. Two Israeli passengers—a doctor and a nurse—provided first aid. Some passengers were pilots who took over the controls and landed the plane in Tabuk.

Investigators are examining a version in which one pilot wanted to crash the aircraft. The other pilot reportedly struck the captain with a knife several times, apparently trying to seize control and crash the plane with everyone on board. Whether it was a suicide attempt or a terror act is still unclear. Several passengers and crew members forced their way into the cockpit and stopped him, Israeli journalist Amit Segal reported. He posted a photo of the FlyDubai crew member whose shirt was soaked in blood.

Initial reports said the pilots were Russian and Ukrainian citizens. Russian propaganda has begun using that narrative (“The second pilot, a Ukrainian, inflicted repeated knife wounds on the Russian captain,” wrote Vladimir Solovyov’s Telegram channel), but it is not verified. According to the latest Israeli outlets Ynet and Walla, the captain is an Emirati citizen, and the second pilot who injured him and tried to crash the plane is an Omani citizen. He is currently being questioned.

The flight carried 174 passengers, including 27 children. Most of them—about 150—were Israeli citizens. No passengers were injured, though they were clearly frightened; a video allegedly recorded during the flight showing cries circulated online. Walla reports that other Flydubai pilots, who were scheduled to fly to Tel Aviv on this route, completed the flight. After landing in Tabuk, FlyDubai sent a standby aircraft to transport the passengers to Tel Aviv.

souvlakee··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
I once asked Claude to replace “byte-identical” with a simpler word, such as “duplicate.” He refused and said “duplicate” does not mean the same thing as “byte-identical” so it should not be changed. He was very nerdy about it, so maybe that is the right way of his evolution.

It is interesting that FFmpeg has its own Git server. Maybe we should move there too?

souvlakee··on SQLite should have (Rust-style) editions
Sadly, the ORM layer lags here: Drizzle has no way to declare STRICT tables. The request has been open since March 2023 (issue #202, now discussion #2435) and didn't make the v1.0 beta either. The only workaround is hand-appending STRICT to generated migration SQL, which doesn't work at all if you use `drizzle-kit push`.

souvlakee··on Windows 11 after two decades of macOS: okay, but also awful
> Windows 11 could've been a fantastic OS. Instead of pushing AI crap and adding Copilot to Notepad (I kid you not), Microsoft could focus on fixing multi-year bugs and cleaning up the UI mess.

Imagine if they started on Windows 7, pinned the design, and continued fixing only old bugs. What a nice OS it could be!

souvlakee··on Kotlin creator's new language: talk to LLMs in specs, not English
As far as I can tell C is not a new language, but rather an alternative workflow for assembly development along with a tool that implements it.

No joke. I'm 100% sure that if it's successful, we will find CC's skill to write specs for CodeSpeak.

For me personally, the question now is: when will I need to implement all the design solutions the OpenAI team has done, but for my personal pet project, which is on a completely different scale? I have FOMO. E.g, do I need that massive observability stack that any DevOps would be proud of, or are console logs okay? :/

We definitely need a version without CF.

That's probably why the author has beginner tasks on the whiteboard like making a bed, washing the dishes, etc. It's hard to imagine having such tasks throughout one's entire life while struggling with procrastination.

souvlakee··on A receipt printer cured my procrastination
> A simple solution is breaking tasks into smaller parts. Let's take an example everyone can relate to: cleaning the house.

Cleaning the house is fundamentally boring. It doesn't matter how many parts you split it into lexically — it's just inherently boring.

Hi HN. I'm the founder of raptors.dev. Our non-profit conducts events mostly for social good and sometimes for fun – current example.

We have a cool idea: to make a tool to convert any site to look like a website from the 90s with the help of AI (not limited to). Our donors have provided basic prize funds, and that's fine. But it is better to have not only monetary (!) things, so any in-kind promo codes, extended trials, credits, and so on would work amazing for us.
