southpolesteve··on Open source blog as another Backbone, Slim, Rails, Bootstrap sample app
If hosting on heroku, you can use a buildpack which will do all the compiling server side
southpolesteve··on Rails is Definitely Not for Beginners
Complete BS. Of course it is! Here was my response the last time someone posted an article like this:

http://southpolesteve.com/rails-is-for-beginners

Inspiration is what drives us to learn more on our own and get through the tough parts. This is what Rails does so well. Look at the way someone's eyes light up after running rails g scaffold for the first time and playing in their very own web app.

southpolesteve··on Mozilla Antarctica community site launched by coolest Firefox fans
I worked on an antarctic research project for several years, including one trip to the south pole. Our specific project used Red Hat Linux with a number of open source libraries for communicating with hardware. Interfaces were programmed in Python.
southpolesteve··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2011
Make sure to check out "South" which is Shackelton's own telling of the journey.
southpolesteve··on Weekend Project: Fractionless Boilerplate (HTML/CSS)
I don't see any compelling reason to use this over boostrap or foundation
southpolesteve··on Authentication made easy, fast and RESTful
Maybe I am missing something, but why would I want to use this? I develop in Rails, where Devise is extremely simple to implement.

Do other frameworks lack a good auth plugin?

southpolesteve··on Money
Average net worth of US Senator: $13,400,000

Average net worth of US representative: $4,900,000

Before looking at this chart, I had a vague notion that senators and representatives are better off than the average american. Turns out they are WAY better off.

southpolesteve··on 90% Good parts of jQuery - at only 13% of the size
Really no .live()? That would be a deal breaker for most of my projects
southpolesteve··on Stop writing good code; Start writing good software.
This is why, as developers, we need to remember the end user and optimize for their experience. I have often found a good exercise is dedicating time to deleting code. I am always surprised on how much this process ends up improving my overall UX.
southpolesteve··on Upgrading Dropbox to 16GB for 25USD
Good luck with that. AdWords is notorious for being difficult in this regard.
southpolesteve··on Can you build beautiful sites with Twitter Bootstrap? Hell yes
https without www is a pain on heroku. I would redirect everything to www. If it makes you feel any better, this doesn't work: https://amazon.com
southpolesteve··on Apple Lossless Audio Codec is now open source (Apache license)
Check out www.murfie.com

They do downloads and offer ALAC and FLAC

southpolesteve··on Better Than ROT13 (Video from RubyConf 2011)
I watched this over the weekend. A great overview of cryptography.
southpolesteve··on Announcing the first release of batman.js
This seems like a horrible way to do things. I really don't want to throw a ton of loop logic (data-foreach?) and other data attributes in my HTML.

I think all of the JS MVC frameworks will be short lived. Someone (hopefully) will develop with a real soup to nuts solution that will make writing a front end heavy app simple. In Rails, I can see it being as easy as "act_as_front_end" somewhere, and the app automatically serves up your JSON to a generated frontend that mirrors your Rails app. I know that would be a hard thing to make, but this is where things should converge.

southpolesteve··on Jig, the first product from Tasty Labs
How much did you pay for the domain?
southpolesteve··on Twitter Bootstrap
Would love this if it used SASS
southpolesteve··on Fake apple stores
yes times 1000
southpolesteve··on WebPutty: CSS editing goes "boink"
Yes. This and using Gaurd for a number of other things.

For my rails work flow, I don't really see the need for this product.

southpolesteve··on Making u-Deals work for everyone
I'm going to start a store that sells only stolen goods at ridiculously low prices. Rather than judge it right away, please wait and see how the public reacts. Let them decide. Then we will know if it is wrong.

This line of thinking makes no sense.

southpolesteve··on Edsger Dijkstra's note on starting array indices at 0 (pdf, 1982)
Many CFD and FEA techniques use formulas that exclude the first and/or last element. When compounded with the 0/1 issue of the original post, it explains why my CFD class was such a living hell. Off by one and two errors all over the place.
southpolesteve··on Coming soon: make your phone your wallet
Mobile gas stations have had a touch and go payment system for a while called Speedpass. It is very slick and I use it all the time. I even go out of my way to visit Mobile gas stations to use it. I can't wait till this is everywhere
southpolesteve··on BusinessWeek's Best Young Tech Entrepreneurs of 2011
I disagree. P/E is just one way of valuing a company.

Regardless of their current valuation, my personal opinion is that Groupon faces serious issues regarding the long term sustainability of their business model. They have dominated an ecosystem that will eventually balance itself. I am skeptical that they can maintain their current valuation through that process.

southpolesteve··on 2 days left to register for Lean Startup Machine SF
I have heard awesome things about this event. Wish I could make it out to SF in time...
southpolesteve··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (May 2011)
That's pretty interesting. Similar to www.parallelkingdom.com ?
southpolesteve··on Google acquires TalkBin (YC W11)
I don't think its snarky to ask a business how they plan to generate revenue.
southpolesteve··on The Guantanamo Files
He is the primary author of Coffeescript: https://github.com/jashkenas/coffee-script

I am not sure, but I believe he also has authored or contributed to the others.

southpolesteve··on Showoff
This is so completely awesome. Just yesterday I was looking for something similar. I will start using this immediately.
