source99··on 68 Katy – 68000 Linux on a Solderless Breadboard
Reminds me of 18-545 at CMU. We did it with wire wrap though. Good times.

Congrats on being able to fit the kernel in 512K

source99··on Show HN: Streaks, a todo list that helps you form good habits
If you do decide to put any science behind it I highly recommend this entertaining book on building habits - http://charlesduhigg.com/the-power-of-habit/
source99··on Show HN: Streaks, a todo list that helps you form good habits
I commend the effort and the app.

I have 2 questions:

1. How is your app different than the dozens of habit forming apps out there?

2. What scientific research did you base your app on?

source99··on It's a darn good time to be a UI/UX designer who wants to work from home
Does anyone know of any other sites that list UX specific contract contract positions?
source99··on Fitbit Files IPO
Can someone explain the purpose of step counting?

From all the academic research I have seen regarding nutrition and exercise getting a few thousand extra steps will have no meaningful affect on your weight and health.

Is the pedometer really just a psychological trick to get people thinking about their weight and health more often which leads to people actually eating less?

source99··on The Rise and Looming Fall of the Engineering Whiteboard Interview
I generally agree with the article in regards to social pressure/anxiety being very high for a whiteboard style interview.

However I disagree with its sentiment that coding resources are free and have no cost. I think this attitude leads to poor quality code. My reasoning is that if you don't have to spend any effort to write code than you will write the laziest code possible. This code might work but it will only work because it evolved from the wrong solution to a barely working solution. If compute time was more of a scare resource developers would spend more time writing correct code instead of iterating until something works.

I don't mean that all developers code poorly because of the decrease in the time of the iteration loop but I feel that it does lead to poor code in the general case.

source99··on TV maker Vizio may finally get paid after beating 17th patent troll
Why is it typically so difficult to recoup attorney's fees? Seems like it should be more common but I guess it's not.
source99··on My 5.5 Months on Soylent: The Joys of Not Cooking
Gary Taubes provides a good summary of recent scientific studies. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qEuIlQONcHw
source99··on My 5.5 Months on Soylent: The Joys of Not Cooking
Gary Taubes is a journalist that does a great job of summarizing scientific research. Read or watch just about anything he writes.
source99··on My 5.5 Months on Soylent: The Joys of Not Cooking
I don't intend to pass judgement on this person but from all the scientific research I have read the ratio of carbs to fat/protein in soylent is not healthy. This individual may not have any visibly negative health effects but I doubt this diet will work for a majority of people for an extended time frame.
source99··on I'll Accept Anything – Accepting every pull request submitted
I stopped posting after one of my playful comments was down voted. That is a real affect of down votes.
source99··on The Lost Art of C Structure Packing
I'm guessing it's a lost art because available system memory is much larger and many programs are written in other languages these days.
source99··on Leatherman Tread, a New Wearable Multi-tool
The world of watches is heading in interesting direction. Slap this band onto an iWatch and you would be unstoppable!
source99··on Ask HN: What would you gladly pay $30/month for?
Someone to take my garbage out of the kitchen into the bins outside my house.
source99··on Google News to shut down in Spain
But it does lead to sites that likely show ads from google. So technically news.google.com doesn't generate revenue but it does direct traffic to news.spain.commercial.site that is showing google ads along side news.
source99··on Regex Crossword
Pretty cool but I don't feel like I am actually learning regex. I think the explanations/definitions need to be more clear and probably the answers less easy to guess.
source99··on CotEditor – Text Editor for OS X
This does seem to work but its pretty painful key combination on my mac keyboard.
source99··on CotEditor – Text Editor for OS X
This doesn't seem to work well as it highlights multiple instances of the word I was on. The current instance and the next instance(but not all instances).
source99··on CotEditor – Text Editor for OS X
Why is 'find' so horribly difficult to use in sublime? I want to find another instance of the current word and then quickly modify it.

I wish getting out of the find text box was simpler and more intuitive.

Maybe it's just me.

source99··on Ask HN: Should Google make a web server?
This makes sense but I think the same comment could have been applied to Firefox. But instead of improving Firefox(or in addition to) Google created Chrome.

Does Google typically improve open source projects or do they just rewrite them from scratch?

source99··on Ask HN: Should Google make a web server?
My question was more specifically about a single piece of software than a infrastructure platform.
source99··on FBI Begins Secret Lobbying to Access Apple and Google Encrypted Customer Data
Is it accurate to call this "lobbying"?
source99··on Audacious Plan to Make Electricity as Easy as WiFi
To me this seems more potent than a typical paid PR piece.

This seems like the last person to invest just realized they are holding the bag and if they believe hard enough they can pass it on.

source99··on Show HN: DeathSwitch
It would be cool to see a similar service encrypt the data in the Bitcoin blockchain and have an automated way of decrypting the data. This way no company or people were involved.

Does the blockchain support something like this?

source99··on Flipkart, Amazon of India, has sales of $100M in one day
Is that $100m USD or the Indian Rupee?
source99··on Live Coding in VR with Oculus Rift, Firefox WebVR, JavaScript, Three.js [video]
VR is no doubt very cool.

But I'm not sure this is taking advantage of the true benefits that a VR environment brings.

What are the major benefits that a VR environment brings?

Screen real estate would be 1 benefit but I would have to see an implementation where this was done well before I could believe it.

What other benefits does VR have?

source99··on The USSR used a nuclear charge to stop a gas well fire in 1966
Not exactly hilarious. For sure.

But I viewed the parallels as interesting and thought others might be interested as well. In the future I'll be sure to make my comments dead pan serious without any humor.

source99··on The USSR used a nuclear charge to stop a gas well fire in 1966
Wow. That's a lot of down votes for a joke/movie reference that shouldn't have offended anyone. Maybe this community isn't for me!
source99··on The USSR used a nuclear charge to stop a gas well fire in 1966
The US and Russia cooperated on a program to do this in space in order to stop a asteroid from destroying the planet. Bruce Willis led the mission.
