sourc3··on An iPhone lover’s confession: I switched to the Nexus 4
I am getting frustrated with all these mobile os posts. Reminds me of the desktop OS wars people took pride in joining.

Everyone's needs are different; some people love customization and hacking their phone. Others get it to just conform to the majority. Some even get it because it's free.

Platforms evolve with different visions. The beauty of the era we are in is the fact that services like Amazon Cloud Player, Dropbox and Spotify let you be on whatever platform you wish without losing your "services".

Am I the only one who doesn't care what OS they use as long as texting/podcasting/web browsing/music is available?

sourc3··on iOS 6: Do Not Disturb mode stays on after scheduled time
Same here! After missing three calls, I was wondering if I had turned this on by mistake. Glad to see it on front page of HN :)
sourc3··on Why C# is the best language for mobile development
Yes, but it's not specific to LINQ or MS or C#. If you give a tool to mediocre developers to make things easier they will use it right away. If you don't supervise its usage (how it fits into the architectural goals of the project you are on) you will end up with a mess.

Anonymous methods, unnamed classes, try catch blocks are all examples of these type of tools that when used improperly will kill the system performance, code readability, maintainability and extensibility.

I agree with this. The entire promise of password auto-save is to save the user TIME. If the browser locked itself every couple of minutes and asked for a master password between visits, it would not help the user save TIME.

I think the author is confusing a feature exclusively created for convenience with one that would be targeting security exclusively.

PS: However, what better way to get HN traffic than a sensational title like that...

sourc3··on I’m writing my own OS
This is pretty interesting. I find this type of behavior to be everywhere in the software world. If I cannot figure something out with a platform, let me re-write it. Interesting observation is that the number of these "re-writes" is inversely proportional to the experience of the person proposing these ideas.

Good luck to the author, nonetheless it will be a good learning experience for him.

sourc3··on Evernote Smart Notebook by Moleskine
As much as I wanted to use digital notes in meetings, I still take joy in using the beautifully designed moleskine notebooks with a Cross pen. However, indexing and search is always a problem. If Evernote can fix this for me I will be a lifetime paid user of Evernote!

In my opinion this is a good glimpse of digital and analog life working in harmony instead of dictating you have to live with either one.

Great job! Ordering mine now :)

sourc3··on Mac OS X 10.8.1 is out.
If you just go to Network Preferences you should see it.
sourc3··on Mac OS X 10.8.1 is out.
I had the same issue on my iMac and it was really annoying. I found that un-checking the box that reads "automatically connect to networks" (or something to that order) helped fix my issue. It may work for you too!
sourc3··on Show HN: SideProjects.com - 37 Bootstrapped Profitable Projects
I feel the same way. I read founders at work before and I am not sure I want to spend $25 just for motivation at the moment :) Thanks for your replies.
sourc3··on Show HN: SideProjects.com - 37 Bootstrapped Profitable Projects
Did anyone read the book yet? Would you recommend it?
sourc3··on Microsoft is pushing users and vendors to Macs and Linux
If the rumors are true and Microsoft releases Office for iPad in November I think the biggest argument in favor of Win8 (which I agree with) will be no longer valid.
sourc3··on Microsoft is pushing users and vendors to Macs and Linux
I agree with this. I am not sure if I see a compelling reason why Win8 on desktop should take off for businesses. It will be a transitionary version just like how Vista was.

Windows 8 tablets? Same story. Why would I as a consumer want to spend $600 to get a tablet with so many unknowns? What does it provide that the iPad currently does not provide? I keep wanting to find a good set of reasons but I can't. You just know what your $500-600 is getting you when you go to iPad and Android. Unless MS lowers the price point to $150-200 it will be a tough sell in my opinion.

The software side of things are very different though. Being a .NET developer for years (after coming from UNIX) I find myself using Java and open source languages more and more often.

If you are an ISV/entrepreneur I am just not sure if it is a good idea to bet the future of your organization on Microsoft's mercy. They keep changing languages/platforms like they change clothes lately.

Nonetheless, the next three-four years will be fun to watch.

sourc3··on Show HN: sweepstakes + Twitter = TweetStakes
Honestly, I was not aware of that! We certainly don't need to modify your profile or read your direct messages.

The only thing we use it for is to check the mentions and follows so far.

Thank you for your help!

sourc3··on Show HN: sweepstakes + Twitter = TweetStakes
That is a really good point that we will immediately implement in our Terms of Use.

2. That is a brilliant suggestion, I have a personal side project that is very much on this using mobile devices! This would be a great addition.

Thank you, this is exactly the type of feedback I was hoping for.

sourc3··on [dead]
Sensational Titles to get upvotes. I am not getting what the biggest issue here is. Is it okay to get free email with ads in it but injection of ads to an otherwise empty space for free video calls that are crisp and very high quality with some ads is a deal-breaker?

A lot of people think running things is free. We all need to realize that maintaining the code base, running the servers etc all cost money. Companies are in the business of making money and if they can make money while providing a free service why not?

Those of us who are not happy with it, should just pay for it to offset the costs :)

sourc3··on Newegg: No, We'll Totally Take Returns After You Install Linux
I had a similar experience with Newegg. I bought one of these shiny 13" uber-thin laptops from them about a year ago. The wireless card on that machine is useless (due to aluminum casing apparently). Exchanging with another model was almost impossible and I had to literally argue with a bunch of people on the phone to get the RMA. Not sure if I ever would buy anything from them again. Amazon on the other hand has been the best experience for me so far. Prime + Amazon, and the only thing I buy in person are groceries.
sourc3··on Make Better Select Boxes with Chosen
I can't even scroll the list on iPad not sure if everyone experiencing the same.
sourc3··on Startup failed, giving away free Qwerty Arm7 mobile devices for cost of postage
I am 5 blocks away too, there should be a HN NY meetup soon!
sourc3··on 3 micro-computers you can use everyday
I think these will power the next generation home entertainment centers in our living rooms.

Considering all the cool hacks (streaming Pandora, looking at albums from a computer etc) the TV is going to be the giant screen hooked up to all sorts of content. Having a tiny, silent box running right behind my TV would be good.

sourc3··on AT&T withdraws T-Mobile takeover application from FCC
I am very happy to read this. I have been a T-Mobile customer (from the early days of VoiceStream) and they have never given me any problems.

In fact, they let me replace an eBay bought phone with a new Tmobile one just because I had the handset protection plan (from years ago).

This is a company that provides comparably good service to both Sprint and Att and charges 3/4 of the price.

For $50 a month I am getting the unlimited 3G/Talk/Text with them, which is unheard of for ATT. Happy with my Windows Phone 7 and Tmobile :)

sourc3··on Follow up emails work
I totally agree with you. As a small business I would not want to share those types of messages with a third party especially when they have no monetization strategy defined on their web site. I don't want my customers ending up with better "offers" from my competitors in the next 6 months. Maybe I am too cautious and paranoid, but to me using a local system seems the only sane way to address the follow up reminder need.
sourc3··on Molly Wood's Verdict on WP7 Challenge: No, thanks.
I agree with you. As a WP7 developer who has tried all 3 platforms so far, I have to say I find the UI of WP7 pretty intuitive. Yes it is playing catch-up at the moment, I agree with that. However, within 2 releases of the OS, Microsoft needs to provide features that are not there on Android and the iOS. Otherwise, MS will not hit the 10% market share that seems to be the necessary threshold to create an upward trend in more user acquisition..
sourc3··on Ask Patrick McKenzie (patio11) anything
One thing that surprised me in the interview was the fact that Patrick went with a sole-proprietorship model. When I started my B2B service as a side project, I went crazy looking at all the possible angles (a business suing you for a bug causing them loss of revenue, not being able to have a merchant account without a proper LLC etc) and back then it made a lot of sense to stick with the LLC model to create that shield in case something happened. Heck, one lawyer I consulted with even suggested I buy insurance.

Either, I have too much to loose and I am not a risk taker or there is something wrong with the advice I have paid for/read online :)

But the lesson is learned, from this point on, I will go with a sole-proprietorship model and avoid paying over ~$1K for the LLC..

sourc3··on John Resig uses this
This is the programmers' version of the celebrity clothing/bags pages with the latest trends : )

At the end of the day, use what makes you happy not because a programmer rock-star is using it.

Disclaimer: I love apple products developing on the .NET framework, it may be ironic that up until last week I was running win7 on a macbook pro to develop for WP7 :)

sourc3··on Instead Of Field Trips To The Zoo, A Long Island Middle School Visits Startups
Having been a student of the guy behind 140 Varick st and re-vitalization of Silicon Alley, I am glad that we start teaching the new generation what it means to be an entrepreneur.

Most kids today are going to college for a paper degree that will get them in the corporate world and provide layers and layers of management cushion one on top of another. Although boring, political and unfulfilling these jobs are not really demanding.

Most people who go through the start-up experience (successful or not) and wear many hats come out of it with invaluable experience and make better owners/employees/consultants :)

Seeing this made my day.

sourc3··on ILSpy is the open-source .NET assembly browser and decompiler.
I have not yet used it because as others pointed out I rely heavily on SQL Server 2005/8 to use Linq To SQL in my solutions. Even if I can host the application on a linux box, I still need a windows box to put the DB server on.

However, I've been looking at postgreSQL for a while and it looks ok. I am curious if anyone has tried this before.

Has anyone done this with MySql/PostgreSQL?

sourc3··on ILSpy is the open-source .NET assembly browser and decompiler.
I have used .NET for all my start up endeavors. Like others have suggested, it just works for me since I have background in .NET and windows development.

Although I have experimented with Ruby and Python both I never felt like the incurring the cost of learning curve while trying to complete a project. In my opinion my customers do not care about the language the application is written in as long as they are accessing it from a browser.

One thing I want to point out is that the monthly costs for VPS are much higher compared to linux nodes and it has a significant impact on hosting costs every month.

sourc3··on Poll: Which 3 languages would you learn
Am I the only one who doesn't think programming language when I read natural language?

I speak 4 at the moment; I would like to be able to read French since it was the international language up until 200-300 years ago and maybe some Greek to be able to read the ancient texts.

In terms of useful languages, I think Italian is the most enjoyable language although I know it I would like to master it.

sourc3··on Appointment Reminder Launches
Welcome Patrick :) I gladly welcome another good competitor in this area. Hopefully together we can drive some innovation in this stagnant field.

sourc3··on Nexus S
Yes, as a former owner of Galaxy S, it is pretty much the same phone but I used to love that phone. Now using a myTouch 4G and appreciating the screen quality of the Galaxy.
