sospep··on Canada's R&D tax credit program hurts R&D in Canada

This doesn't compute.

sospep··on Medicine Hat becomes the first city in Canada to eliminate homelessness
> Unfortunately, he ends with However, I've come around to realize that this makes financial sense. Silly me, I thought the change of mind was about empathy

My guess would be that the "formerly homeless" of Medicine Hat, appreciate the "roof over their head", much more than any amount of "empathy"

sospep··on Ask HN: How do I prepare for the interview?
> NOT an alumni or past interviewee but i'll put this out there ...

1] Paul Graham - wrote an Essay - How To prepare for the interview

2] I created a summarized, annoted version of 'Grahams essays key points' aka my TLDR

I would memorize those keypoints

3] I also compiled a list of the 'interview questions' that they are known to ask?

you/your co founders probably want to know the answer to every 1 of those questions, as they pertain to your company, backward, forwards and sideways :)

4] and a few other resources, that may be helpful to you... - like ARTICLE(s) - our interview with ycombinator by ... (* x) - i will add the links to the Reference section the article i posted above

Finally, congratulations, I suspect the bar to YC is pretty high and you've cleared the first hurdle. Now get started practicing those interview ?'s and good luck!

sospep··on BlackBerry posts fourth-quarter profit; seeks to end revenue slide
also noteworthy, is that this wasn't just a 'marketing deal' per se but an "enterprise partnership"

The Mercedes F1 team runs its business on BB hardware and software.

"The Mercedes F1 Team uses more than 200 BlackBerrys including Blackberry Z10s, Q10s, Z30s and Passports. It's these along with BlackBerry Enterprise Sever 10 (BES10) which seem integral to the day-to-day running of the business."

sospep··on BlackBerry posts fourth-quarter profit; seeks to end revenue slide
The Mercedes sponsorship was deal was completed by the previous management team at BB.

It was probably the best "marketing deal" that BB made at a reported $12M year for 3 years[1].

sospep··on DuckDuckGo: To apply, first do some work for free. Is this ethical practice?
When i submit a "resume, coverletter, interview answers, ..." all of my personal info(PI) goes into a black hole at company {X}. I don't know what they do with my PI, dont know how they determine who is a match and who is not, essentially I am giving up my time and my PI to a process I have 0 control over.

If I were to submit some "actual work" and that "work" was assessed and evaluated by {any} company in relation to others submitting "work" in what I believed to be a fair and open process, I don't think that I would have a problem using this process with any company.

sospep··on DuckDuckGo: To apply, first do some work for free. Is this ethical practice?
>> A quality job search already requires so much time, and I don't want to do work for free when I know it's probably a long-shot from being hired anyway.

- I agree that a quality job search requires a lot of time ( -creating your resume, -tailored cover letter, -getting your resume into company x system, getting your resume noticed, researching the company, researching the product, interview prep, the interview process, waiting for the decision, ... )

>> This turned me off from applying to the company, even though I'd love to work with them.

ALL of the above noted job search items, are an investment on your behalf, with absolutely NO guarantee of any return

IF you were "truly" interested in working for ddg ( the product, the company)

WHY would you not want to consider something like this?

YES you are investing a certain amount of your time without any guarantee (just like you would to apply to any company)

BUT if the time you invested contributes to making a product that you use and love, BETTER, how is that NOT still a win/win situation?

AND if you do get hired, well SCORE for you!

DISCLAIMER: I have no duck in this race(aka affiliation with DDG) but i do think this is a potentially awesome idea (depending on their execution).

TLDR: YES i think it has te potential to be both a good practice and ethical, assuming that the company demonstrates some level of transparency in its processes.

sospep··on BlackBerry CEO Wants FCC to Make Developing BlackBerry Apps Mandatory
> I suppose if you are the type of person who thinks that it makes sense to be CEO of BlackBerry

Chen is known in the corporate world as somewhat of a turnaround artist. Blackberry needed a turnaround. That could have been why it "made sense" for him, or perhaps the 80ish million a year there paying him.

Mel Baker commented on the article and pointed out ...

>> If you read the original work he refers to the empty quarter because of population density

I do get your point on the "Extractotopia" name for the region, but personally would be more inclined to view it as ExtractoDystopia, ( google earth - fort mcmurray then you decide)

Of course after the oil and mining companies are done with it, the name "The Empty Quarter" could once again be the most applicable

sospep··on Why Yahoo Keeps Killing Everything It Buys
RIM(Research in Motion) was renamed/rebranded as BBRY(Blackberry) in 2013

BRRY(the company) is NOT dead.

They are still very much alive and still making and selling smartphones and other products/services.

IMO, they are doing a much better job of making them(smartphones), then they are of selling them, and if they continue on that trajectory they could well end up ... dead ... but

FWIW - Let's not put the body in the cooler until were sure that its actually not breathing.

>> You can have a keyboard and a touchscreen at the same time. I actually loved my keyboard/touchscreen android phone. I still want a real keyboard. I miss it.

I can't imagine that a BBRY Q10 running BB 10.2.1 would not have more appeal than the android keyboard/touchscreen that you had.
