I have a newsletter with writing advice for software developers: https://writingfordevelopers.substack.com/

It's semi-paused right now, but I am wondering if I should make it active again. If you like it, I would appreciate your feedback.

soneca··on Grim Fandango Puzzle Document (1996) [pdf]
> ”We didn’t have the last puzzle designed when I wrote that document, so I wrote two nonsense paragraphs and then overlapped them in the file so it would look like the final puzzle description was in there, but obscured by a print formatting error. That way I could turn the document in by the deadline.”
soneca··on Basketball has evolved into a game of calculated decision-making
Came here to say this. It doesn’t have to be late in the game. The whole time tactical fouls is a valuable tool for defense. You try to make it non-violent enough and, when it’s a counterattack, early enough so the referee might not interpret as a foul to prevent a counterattack, so you don’t get a yellow card.

Also, exchanging a certain goal for a penalty+red card is a very common defense tactic. Check Uruguay vs Ghana, World Cup 2010.

soneca··on To avoid being replaced by LLMs, do what they can't
There is this tweet about impressive companies with short headcount:

https://x.com/benln/status/1889388151770325427?s=46&t=tl870z...

But I don’t think the advent of LLM is responsible for any job cut in these companies. The overall startup ecosystem is (Stripe, cloud computing, efficient customer support software, etc).

But the fact that Cursor is one of those impressive companies shows the demand for AI assistance is huge

soneca··on Surnames from nicknames nobody has any more
I didn’t know English had a diminutive suffix (-kin). Is it used still in common English?

We have it Portuguese (-inho/-inha) and I find them so useful. It always seemed a missing feature of English.

Also, is there an augmentative suffix as well that I don’t know about?

soneca··on What makes a great mocktail? (2018)
The article seemed very promising to me. I don’t drink and would like to have something fancy, innovative to drink some times when I bored of water, juices and soda.

But then the article starts saying the goal is to mimic alcohol taste. I don’t drink precisely because I hate the taste of alcohol. Bummer.

soneca··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
> ”Always keep interviewing”

This seems as exhausting as working more than 40 hours a week routinely. I would rather keep a financial reserve to cover the time to get a new job.

soneca··on Brazil bans Sam Altman's tech firm Tools for Humanity from paying for iris scans
There is one near home. When I passed by I saw one man stopping a couple in the street and explaining if they couldn’t go inside and give him the money.

Sort of like a beggar, but asking the couple to go inside, scan their iris then giving him the money (since it’s free money anyway). I am not sure how that would work in practice, since I just passing by. But they were paying USD50~60 , a significant amount to make the ask worth it.

soneca··on Calling Strangers Uncle and Auntie
For Brazil, level 2 seems exactly right.

> ” Level 2: Casual acquaintances. Used more widely for neighbors, family friends, or community members you vaguely know, but typically not for an absolute stranger.”

I would specifically add to he list of examples your school teacher when you are a child and the parents of your friends, seems the most common usage for it.

soneca··on LLM based agents as Dungeon Masters
I am not interested in this, but an AI DM that allow human players to play would keep the social aspect. Since being DM is a higher threshold of knowledge and time investment, this could unblock a social gathering, rather than substituting it.

Also, if it doesn’t try to keep the story to strict guardrails, the creativity and story creation would come essentially from the human players.

I don’t think those arguments are enough to make me want to use it, but I see the point and possible interesting use.

soneca··on Lorne Michaels Is the Real Star of "Saturday Night Live"
By watching the show on YouTube for the last two seasons I find Bowen Yang the most consistently funny member of the cast. I always laugh with him. Then how much I laugh depends more on the sketch
soneca··on Ask HN: Am I the only one here who can't stand HN's AI obsession?
I agree, but I find that useful. There are a lot of info, developments, and opinions that I can go through and inform and update my view on the topic. It was on HN that I was able to very quickly realize web3 was a scam.

It was also good to teach that if enough people believe cryptocurrency is a way to invest money, it becomes as legitimate a way to invest money than any other. Also informed me of all the nuances and how naive ideology, even if misplaced and bad at forming the future, and money from illegal activities can become a legitimate investment option and become part of the mainstream where all of its past can be mostly ignored by current cryptocurrency owners. Anyway, right or wrong, that is my current view on it and it was informed by what I chose to read about it on HN.

Even the current flood of AI content I find useful to gradually understand how to use it or not, bring attention around ethical dilemmas, what is the useful for and what is not useful for.

And since I can chose what I read very easily on HN, it doesn’t bother me at all the hype-driven subject of HN submissions.

soneca··on Stimulation Clicker
Reaction streamer seems custom made as well
soneca··on A messy experiment that changed how I think about AI code analysis
Oh, I was confused, thanks a lot.

And, indeed, reading every file from top to bottom is very alien to me as a junior.

I would just try to get to the file I thought the change I needed was made and start trying and error. Definitely not checking the core files, much less creating a mental model of the architecture (the very concept of architecture would be alien to me then).

I would do get lost in irrelevant details (because I thought they were relevant), while completely missing the details that did matter.

soneca··on U.S. Army Soldier Arrested in AT&T, Verizon Extortions
The article establishing his identity was only published a month ago[1] and the security expert seems to be impressed with how fast it took to bring him in.

”Between when we, and an anonymous colleague, found his opsec mistake on November 10th to his last Telegram activity on December 6, law enforcement set the speed record for the fastest turnaround time for an American federal cyber case that I have witnessed in my career,” she said.

soneca··on Coding Font Selection 'Tournament'
I use it for a few years already. It is not an option in this game, right?

I got Nanum Gothic Coding, but couldn’t find a good site to compare it with Iosevka side by side to check if they are similar

soneca··on I'm trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
Someone will come, and, for me at least, it is ok if it’s fewer people than what would come on mass reach platform
soneca··on I'm trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
Actually, it doesn’t have to be self-hosted for me.

A managed product, hosted by a company, that I can point to my domain would work (just like some blog or website makers solutions).

Discourse has managed option though, so thanks for pointing it out.

soneca··on Trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
I understand a blog on your own domain is your land in regard to microblogging platforms. But what would be my land in regard to community software, like Telegram or Discord?

Is there any software like this that I can host on my domain?

soneca··on The number pi has an evil twin
> ” This ∞-shaped curve is called a 'leminscate', and ϖ is called the 'lemniscate constant'. I'll show you the leminiscate in my next post.”

This got me confused, so I went to check. Apparently ”lemniscate” is the correct spelling.

soneca··on Grammarly acquires Coda
Having English as a second language, it was essential for me for a long time. I never understood why they never marketed to that public.

I don’t pay for it anymore because I am more comfortable in my current company where I am sure my colleagues won’t be bothered by frequent mistakes and misspellings. Also, for the eventual more important text that I want to be grammatically perfect, there is free ChatGPT now.

soneca··on Getting to 2M users as a one woman dev team [video]
I am curious of more about the business as well, but I imagine even a very small proportion of paying users could be sufficient to maintain a 3-people team with that scale
soneca··on A liar who always lies says "All my hats are green."
It is a logic puzzle. It is not two regular (or academic) people communicating
soneca··on A liar who always lies says "All my hats are green."
I wonder what color is a hat that doesn’t exist.

If a person doesn’t have any hats, is the statement ”All my hats are hats” false?

soneca··on China completes green belt around Taklamakan Desert
> ”The initiative combines solar-powered sand-blocking technology with extensive vegetation planting to stabilize the desert’s edges.”

What sand-blocking tech is that? Does anyone know?

soneca··on USC Student Rocket Group Shatters International Amateur Space Record
I dont know if you were downvoted for being pedantic or for being wrong. But I’d love to know if this is true.

And if so, I will upvote your pedantry

soneca··on ChatGPT now on chat.com
I agree. WhatsApp is by far the most popular app in Brazil (of all kinds, not only messengers). Yet…

- Its name is unpronounceable for 90% of its users (we short it to ”zap”)

- The word itself has unfamiliar letter combinations (“wh” and “pp”).

- The intended pun doesn’t work at all, since no one here uses “What’s up” (not even the 10% that understands English)

Similar to what happens with “Google” and “Facebook”, btw.

soneca··on Tracking down a mysterious skateboarder from 1979
I might be wrong, but I have the impression that this kind of post was always part of HN. Since, idk, 10 years ago.
soneca··on Polymarket Paid US Social Media Influencers for Election Content
Even if I know that is bullshit if someone claims to know the next number of a roulette and backs it up going all-in on black, it is not rational for me to bet on red.
soneca··on My Time Working at Stripe
Well, the manager asked only for “10% more vulnerable”. That seems pretty far from “being forced into group therapy” in my perception.

It was the author and colleagues that decided to overstate, and seemingly did not regret. Groups of humans sometimes have connections like these, whatever the environment they are in.

I am sure other similar meeting with the same prompt only generated people saying they have two cats, they I am anxious about learning a new programming language or that they do not quite understand Stripe business model

soneca··on Scott Fitzgerald's Last Act
Maybe going into exile meant happiness to Salinger.

I have the impression that Toni Morrison had a happy later life.

Denis Johnson published his important works after quitting drugs and alcohol. I also have the impression that his later life was happy.
