somenewaccount1··on Conduit: Simple, fast and reliable chat server powered by Matrix
Since every matrix server requires you create its own user id, I never understood the benefit of being federated.
somenewaccount1··on Why SQLite does not use Git (2018)
Which is why I said he should be more upfront about it. I had to find that statement buried after 30 minutes of reading how amazing fossil was.
somenewaccount1··on Why SQLite does not use Git (2018)
>Git focuses on individual branches, because that is exactly what you want for a highly-distributed bazaar-style project such as Linux. Linus Torvalds does not want to see every check-in by every contributor to Linux: such extreme visibility does not scale well. Contrast Fossil, which was written for the cathedral-style SQLite project and its handful of active committers

Ugh...so after all that fanfare of how amazing fossil is, the author admits it just doesn't scale well. I was wondering how that "see it all" approach worked for a busy repo, and now I know, it just doesn't.

I love SQLite, and glad the primary author is happy working on it with fossil. I think if he published it's largest downfall first, it might gain more adoption to folks that could actually use that feature.

If you use double ampersand, yes. One amp will kick them off consecutively, but they will run concurrently.

somenewaccount1··on Red Hat dropping support for LibreOffice
In 2023? I would argue image/video editing for sure.
somenewaccount1··on DevEx: What Drives Productivity
> Although DevEx is complex and nuanced, teams and organizations can take steps toward improvement by focusing on these three key areas.

I feel like they are aware that not everything fits into the framework perfectly, but if your organization was trying to improve DevEx, this framework is a place to start.

Uhhh..probably you and .2% of hiring managers. I've never cared when hiring, and have never heard this advice anywhere but this post. No offense, but if it was as common as 10%, recruiters and bloggers would be suggesting it left and right.
somenewaccount1··on Children aged 2-6 successfully trained to acquire absolute pitch (2012)
What is absolute pitch?
somenewaccount1··on Boston Dynamics’ bipedal robot Atlas can now grab and toss
people are saying this is "fake" because the overall motions were programmed ahead of time.

However, picking stuff up perfectly, placing it, and jumping, just using sensors - which is what this is really illustrating - is not that fake to me.

I could imagine this robot being used by airlines to move baggage. A confined set of pre-programmed movements with the only variable being the luggage on a cart, and a human supervisor. It reduced the back-breaking task of moving luggage to a just a normal "stand there and press buttons" type of job. Easier to higher for, maintain that crew member, and less injuries to baggage handlers.

somenewaccount1··on What's Ahead for U.S. Propane Marketers in Winter 2022-23?
The article is paywalled. The fact that there is a paywalled news sight just for propane is interesting in itself though.
somenewaccount1··on Does crypto expose the emperor's clothes of the financial services industry?
> So I think the problem here is not that crypto isn’t a ponzi scheme, it certainly is. But if so, then what part of the financial services industry can claim that it isn’t also?

Stocks that pay dividends aren't ponzi schemes.

Bonds that use the money to pay for public infrastructure aren't ponzi schemes.

And on that note, private companies that use the funds from the sales of stock in order to actually provide a good or service, would also qualify as non-ponzi scheme.

Are there ponzi schemes on Wall St? Plenty. But most of it? No.

Lol, and you think your a 'big boy' with such a sweepingly ignorant attitude? Interesting.

I loath crypto, but I still did it for a couple years while they paid me in USD while I traveled to Asia extensively.

somenewaccount1··on Mastodon Web Space Search Tool
Interesting that it's not. Without a global search space it makes mastadon look like a poor version of AOL chat rooms.

Radarnow has been my go to satellite weather app for many years now. Idk if it's the best because I haven't tried the others, but I like it and found it very accurate when living in Oregon. It was neet to time projects between the rain drops, literally.
somenewaccount1··on Tell HN: I just received my Equifax breach settlement check
The entirety of modern American society is built on those scores. You want life without it? Go to a developing country and suffer a life of poverty with few avenues to build your credibility - and likewise, few avenues to escape poverty.
somenewaccount1··on “My PGP key is compromised, and at least many of my bitcoins stolen”
Having worked in banking for 20 years and knowing how many fraud transactions are reversed, I do indeed find that false information to be surprising.

Any job not burning the equivalent energy of Argentina to accomplish a technical feat that could be done better with psql running on a raspberry pi.
somenewaccount1··on Amazon admits no basis for damages in $1M asset seizure by DOJ?
For myself, Microsoft crushing everything in the 90's, and more recently, shorting Tesla. I could care less about Elon, the car is still dope and pushes humanity forward while every aristocrat tried to snuff it, Bill included.

The philanthropy bit I think is just a PR stunt. Bill is not a nice man, or a good man, IMHO.

somenewaccount1··on Vietnam GDP grows 8.02% in 2022; fastest expansion in 25 years
While some of those are true, you're discounting the benefits of life in Vietnam far too quickly, especially if you are moving back from the US with savings and a social security check.

- People are kinder to each other, that's worth more than many modern comforts.

- feel free and comfortable and relatively safe to ride your moped in your 70's - everyone does.

- get a cheap private Grab (Uber) if you are really incapable.

- food chain supply is significantly better, resulting in fresher and with healthier options almost everywhere compare to most modern countrues.

- most modern medicine is available, and their are counties with superior medicine with a few hours flight. For many specialties, it's the same in the US - except you may only fly between states rather than counties. Same distance though.

Ultimately, quality of life is subjective. You may think you have luxeries like neverending fast food sitting on your ass watching netflix, while I think you have shackles to an un-natural lifestyle that is burdened with gluttony and misery.

In my experience living in Vietnam, the people are poorer and work harder, but still happier than the average person stateside. If you judge quality of life by a standard of happiness, I think many modern countries loose.

somenewaccount1··on Wells Fargo Penalties Since 2000: $22B
No, it's not. One actually has a valid business with flawed implementation which effected a portion of customers. The other is a Ponzi scheme that stole 100% of assets from 100% of customers. In Wells case, affected customers have legal recourse that can compensate them for their suffering, because the overall business is solvent. In FTX case, you get nothing, nada, zero, zip.
somenewaccount1··on Ask HN: Are things getting more convenient but less satisfying?
Yes! I had the shower thought this morning that gathering to go out to the movies with friends is nearly a thing of the past now, and one of the reasons is we have giant TV's in Walmart that take up your living room wall for $500.

I have an 80" tv myself and I can attest that it is LESS satisfying. I can see so many details in the film now that almost every movie looks low budget. No one wants to "come over for movie night" ..they have their own 60+ TV at home. It's easier than ever to watch a movie, but boring as heck for sure.

Just an anecdotal part of my life that is as you suggested - more convenient but less satisfying.

somenewaccount1··on FTX Lawyer Says ‘Substantial Amount’ of Crypto Firm’s Assets Stolen or Missing
Oh God. Thanks for the flag. I was not fulminating though, I was pointing out factual matter that no one else wants to say outright: SBF is, was, and forever shall be a thief.

35 others upvoted my comment, it appears the community liked it just fine.

I owe you nothing. You owe me an apologie.

somenewaccount1··on Hiring tech lead to help solve major historical puzzle
$250/6 mos is excellent pay, but 1/2 of that, $120/6mos is just normal "sr eng" pay.

But considering this is contract work, with no benefits, and involves solving a puzzle - aka success may be completely out of your control - it's not really that good of an offer, imho.

Someone may take it up for the fun though, or if they just happened to be laid off.

somenewaccount1··on FTX Lawyer Says ‘Substantial Amount’ of Crypto Firm’s Assets Stolen or Missing
The idiot (Sam) took billions of peoples hard saved assets and let a 27 year old twit day trade gamble it down the tube.

IMHO, 100% of all the assets are "Stolen or Missing". Sam stole them. That's where they went. He did it. That was the guy. He's right there. Just look at him. Where are the assets? Sam stole them. And then spent them and snorted them and then spent some more. And yeah, he probably didn't secure them very well either, so once crypto hackers knew he was a thief they just dove right in and helped themselves.

I suspect this will be an unpopular opinion - but I respect Bernie Madoff more than Sam Bankman Fried. Bernie knew he was a fraud. When he was busted, the only question he had was what took them so long. There is an honesty of guilt there. This guy just thinks "he made mistakes". Bullshit. You don't transfer custodial assets to a losing gambling routine and "it's just a mistake". That's like Achmed calling it "just a flesh wound".

I hope Sam gets life in prison or worse.

somenewaccount1··on The Lie That Facebook Sold You
While I understand your analogy, advertising tracking != death.

And also...yup. Exactly right. Thankfully something did come along that provided the business affordability and convenience of installation, while simultaneously reducing the health effects. You see, they took everything into consideration when then replaced it - both the benefit to the consumers and the businesses using it.
