somehowadev··on FreeBSD doesn't have Wi-Fi driver for my old MacBook, so AI built one for me
Personally the experience getting tickets at the moment is horrible.

Endless queues, scalpers grabbing tickets within a second. Having to wait days/weeks periodically checking to see if a ticket is available.

The only platform I’m aware of that does guarantee a ticket can be purchased if available is Dice once you join a wait list. You get given a reasonable time to purchase it in too.

So I can see why people would prefer to defer this to an agent and not care about the implementation, I personally would. In the past I’ve been able to script notifications for it for myself and can see more people benefiting from it.

As long as your workload can handle resuming again and your instances aren't heavily in-demand (looking at the eviction rates), the cost saving for us is substantial enough to take the occasional interruption.

I do wish Azure gave more than the 30 second eviction warning (like AWS) but still useable.

somehowadev··on Show HN: PDF API – Generate, convert, and modify PDF documents
The pricing may need to have a revisit! Enterprises would probably be the most keen and also find better alternatives for the cost.
somehowadev··on Smart-TV blocklist for Pi-Hole
I know some of the LG domains should probably begin with a wildcard, as I’ve seen gb.lg etc that’s not in the list.

When I bought my first smart TV (mainly due to lack of dumb screens), immediately grabbed a Pi-Hole and started blocking everything I could find.

Also, one of the only occurrences where I’m skeptical even updating the tv software.

somehowadev··on Tesla driver dies after his Model 3 stops on highway, gets hit by two other
So you know it will consistently fail in some cases and yet still use it?
somehowadev··on Less secure apps and your Google Account
Would like to do the same myself.. sadly my domain regsitrar is Google, not too sure if I'll need to register another name (a .dev tld) or if there's an easy route of changing registrars.
somehowadev··on Google Maps ToS can be summarised as: Don't use it
This isn’t the free service though? It’s for the Google Maps API which does have a cost?

I remember trying to find some sort of point of interest API and having to quickly rule out Google after reading their terms. Stuff like “no caching” is somewhat painful.

Other platforms allow caching from a few weeks to a few months, they don’t have the reach of Google but at least have fairer terms (I’m not trying to build a competing Maps product here!).

somehowadev··on BBC licence fee to be abolished in 2027 and funding frozen
This is relatively normal standard operating procedure for this Government.

Throw out loads of policies at the exact moment something bad for the cabinet is starting to gain traction.

somehowadev··on Shodan 2000
Whenever I need to make an argument against IoT, I just point to Shodan and the vast amount of broken/open but still connected devices.

Really doesn't take long to find some industrial automation there.

somehowadev··on Someone attached an AirTag to my car while I was in a bar
I believe that's where the advice to hand an AirTag to the authorities come from?

somehowadev··on AWS EC2/RDS Outage in us-east-1
I’m surprised by how much of the “internet” seem to be affected by a single AZ going down.
somehowadev··on Surveillance cameras debunk the bystander effect
Speaking for London, although many feel safe in the city. Most people (including me) aren’t stupid enough to get involved in a violent altercation if you happen to stumble across one.

It’d be foolish to get between 2 gangs fighting.

Alternatively if someone just collapsed on the street during rush hour, many will come over to help.

somehowadev··on What predicts students’ drinking habits? How much they think others are drinking
Something I can finally contribute to on HN!

There’s probably a few causes for how we abuse alcohol in the UK.

1. Most pubs close relatively early (11pm-1am), so after work you don’t have too much time to spend before you have to decide between a club or home.

2. Anecdotally, although most people know their limits. I see people in my circles tend to drink at the rate of the fastest drinker and “catchup”, especially if doing rounds.

3. We do have a bit of a binge drinking culture. Our culture (in my opinion) tends to encourage getting drunk (as long as you don’t cause harm to others).
