someguy101010··on Slouch: Posture panic in modern America
I'll just provide a quick counter to this based on my own experience.

A few years ago I had been in my best shape (daily exercise, cardio and weight lifting) and started experiencing some forearm pain. I thought it was just from over use from typing but i finally went to a physical therapist and found that the pain came from me hunching over on my computer and putting a lot of strain on my fore arms. The posture I took on was a combination of

1. Just leaning in to my computer because I'd be trying to read text or getting "into" whatever i'm working on

2. My upper back not having the endurance or development that I needed to hold up my upper body.

I had to change my exercise routine to give my muscles more endurance to hold my upper back up while seated.

So yea, exercise is definitely going to help but I wouldn't just say it fixes things automagically for you and you could run into posture issues even when you are doing the right things in life. :)

someguy101010··on Show HN: Oodle – serverless, fully-managed, drop-in replacement for Prometheus
any plans to open source? I feel very comfortable using neon.tech (separates compute from storage for postgres) b/c they open source their stack but it would be hard for me to adopt something like oodle without an open source version.

Nice! I'll have to read through this and use it to improve https://brev.dev/blog/how-to-win-a-2-player-game-of-are-you-... which was a similar exercise on a game slightly different than prisoners dilemma. I like being able to use "brute force" numerical methods to solve problems like this because they are often simpler to construct and exploit the fact that computers go brrr.

someguy101010··on Ask HN: Does it still matter to be in the Bay Area?
I moved here ~2 years ago to join an early stage startup and while its "not what is used to be"[1] I have personally benefited a lot from being exposed to the business and engineering culture here. I'm starting my own company now and have access to much more networking events and people who "get it" than I think I could have access to if I lived anywhere else. I haven't though so its hard to say.

There is an incredible amount of tacit knowledge in this city that is hard to really internalize until you are actually here and living through it. I think programs like https://www.siltahouse.com/home take a great advantage of these things.

There's a lot of counter intuitive things about early stage that you can't really convey in a blog post, or you may not even believe until you see it yourself up close from people. The open minded attitudes and culture around risk is something that you can really internalize when you are around other people who give you the correct social proof.

Is this all things you can get other places? Sure! It may not matter as much as it did 10 years ago, but you will have a hard time not getting a positive experience out of living, working, or building in the Bay Area.

[1] people have said this since the beginning of time about everything anyways

someguy101010··on Why does Rust choose not to provide `for` comprehensions?
I personally prefer the following style instead of comprehensions

        let my_arr = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5];
        my_arr.iter().map(|x| x + 1).for_each(
            |item| println!("The Value of this item is {item}")
        );
the map statement allows for one liners, like list comprehensions, with the added benefit of semantics like being able to chain operations into pipelines.

someguy101010··on Ask HN: How do you find (again) joy in software dev with so much setup?
I feel your pain,

I try to mitigate this as much as possible with templating projects. I use https://gitlab.com/reedrichards/cookiecutter-goapp for small webservers and this generates the infra i need for aws, and go has been a relatively simple development and packaging platform for me.

I am also working at https://brev.dev and have been using their product at work and on personal projects to help standardize my development environment well. I often found myself at other companies constantly fire fighting developer environments falling into entropy and wishing for something like this so we can not having to worry about the different configurations of N developers * M machines.

someguy101010··on Thoughts on chess improvement, after gaining 600 points in 6 months
I noticed improvements in general visualization ability from doing this. I was grinding leetcode during this time and noticed improvements visualizing data structures after I practiced board visualization for a bit.

I created a new account on lichess and started playing blindfold games right away. It depends on how long the games are and how complicated the position gets but anywhere from 13 to 50 moves I'll be okay. I won two games so far.
someguy101010··on Thoughts on chess improvement, after gaining 600 points in 6 months
I gained 200 point when I started practicing blindfolded, also great visualization training! A good way to start this is have someone call out squares on the board and you respond with the color. Next start naming the diagonals. Then start moving around a knight, bishop, and then slowly build up your ability to hold a game in your head. Highly recommend!

Thanks for this article. The woodpecker method seems like a nice opportunity for a slack bot.

someguy101010··on Ask HN: Remote Work for Refugees and Asylum Seekers?
> what's stopping cheap, non-refugee laborers from scooping job postings from refugees? I don't think it would be possible to verify the refugee status of someone without leaking identifying info.

I think problem is solved by the fact if you aren't a refugee you are probably looking for work through normal channels. A job board like this is for people who are either doing something illegal (as a symptom of being a gov resistant platform), or who have no other options due to circumstances.
