somebodythere··on Sky Mavis raises $150M, funds to be restored on the Ronin Bridge
It's definitely written in a way that all users could be partially refunded, and still be truthful. It's quite likely that Sky Mavis doesn't manage to come up with the money to make all their users whole, and as such it would be risky to promise to fully reimburse all users.
somebodythere··on Britain being forced to go cashless 'against its will'
Part of fixing the governments is resisting the encroachment of financial surveillance into everyone's lives.
somebodythere··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
It probably depends on the jurisdiction, and if they interpret the smart contract as a computer program, and have hacking laws they can apply, or as an actual autonomous contract that is legally valid. Both seem like plausible interpretations, but I think the former is more natural/likely for the typical judge.
somebodythere··on Thundernetes makes it easy to run your game servers on Kubernetes
Not really. Minecraft server notoriously ran in JVM for most of it's existence. Container virtualization is unlikely to add more than a few microseconds of latency.
somebodythere··on Have iPhone cameras become too smart?
The Olympus cameras look sweet. Hadn't looked into them before. They seem a bit more stills-focused, but very nice.
somebodythere··on How come there’s not an app that’s successful at helping people making friends?
IME the people who want to find connections on an app tend to have anxiety around actually meeting/doing things with new people, and apps are unable to drive the level of commitment required to overcome that anxiety. Without an existing social network, connections tend to fizzle out before a relationship (platonic or otherwise) has a chance to be established.
somebodythere··on Have iPhone cameras become too smart?
As a person who makes money shooting video. I wish I had more reason to invest in my camera body. Interchangeable lens should come with chromatic abberation/distortion profiles on a chip that communicates with the camera so we can buy cheaper and lighter lenses with fewer elements. You can always buy the fancy lens with perfect optics if you prefer that aesthetic. A professional camera software will always expose on/off switches for the correction so the photographer retains control over the shot. I really don't see the problem with giving pro cameras more optional smarts, it just makes them more versatile.
somebodythere··on Vimeo: “We are a B2B solution, not the indie version of YouTube.”
A single provider deciding to charge you 16% of your revenue is kind of unusual.
somebodythere··on Tesla fired an employee after he posted driverless tech reviews on YouTube
Who would win: someone on an unrelated website saying I post dumb things on twitter, or my employer firing me in retaliation.
somebodythere··on Finland starts much-delayed nuclear plant, brings respite to power market
The average human consumes much less energy than the average Finn. (Though that number is likely to grow as the world becomes more industrialized.)
somebodythere··on Don't ask to ask, just ask (2019)
Which is why when someone says "do you have a minute" or "can we talk", I don't know if they're about to drop a bomb! It is stressful!
somebodythere··on Ask HN: Is your company considering inflation in this year's comp review cycle?
The price of labor can increase faster than the price of goods increases. This is usually what people refer to when they talk about the development of a country's economy, or a country getting "richer".
somebodythere··on Apple turns monitor height adjustment into a $400 upsell
As someone who takes video conferences from my desk pretty often I would buy this monitor for the audio/camera (VESA mount version since I already have an ergotron for my monitor) but I don't think I can go back to non-high refresh rate monitor.
somebodythere··on MasterCard suspends all services in Russia
USDC is audited and regulated. But you don't have to trust a centralized stablecoin, decentralized and transparently auditable ones are available too.
somebodythere··on MasterCard suspends all services in Russia
> It isn’t money if it is loses 60% of its value in a couple of hours with additional fees I didn’t agree to.

Like the ruble? Anyway, are you aware of stablecoins?

somebodythere··on Yandex warns of bond repayment and supply risks
It is propaganda. I am not sure where this notion that "in a war you need myths" comes from.
somebodythere··on Tell HN: I got 10x Hetzner storage at the same price
Compared to AWS et al, sure. But there are plenty cloud services with datacenters in USA that are similarly cost-effective.
somebodythere··on Tell HN: I got 10x Hetzner storage at the same price
I think it's just about latency. If most of your users/employees are located in NA, it doesn't make much sense to give them degraded network experience to save few Euros on hosting costs.
somebodythere··on Jujutsu – A Git-compatible DVCS that is both simple and powerful
I think the programmer tendency to think of usability as an implementation detail is probably why open-source app UX was considered a joke for so many years. Only now is that perception starting to change, because enough people have taken an interest in the space who make usability a priority.
somebodythere··on Avoid the Apple App Store
The $700 computer is a big barrier for a lot of people actually!
somebodythere··on Blockfi agrees to pay $100M in penalties and pursue registration
Nothing decentralized about BlockFi.
somebodythere··on Selenium may explain brain boost from exercise
How long is extended?
somebodythere··on Ask HN: What are the purchases under $300 that have improved your life?
A garlic press.
somebodythere··on Amazon more than doubles max base pay to $350k
I use a door as a desk at home. With some finishing it looks as good as a solid wooden desk, and its much sturdier and nicer feeling than a plastic desk, while being the same price.
somebodythere··on Wormhole confirms all $320M in funds have been restored
wETH wraps ETH, not SOL.
somebodythere··on Deep symbolic regression for recurrent sequences
That sequence is out of domain I think.
somebodythere··on A critique of longtermism: why you shouldn't worry about the far future
This philosophy also presumes that the future existence of these trillions of hypothetical humans is an inherent good, when it seems to me that they would not be alive to lament their nonexistence (indeed, they may as well be spared from suffering in a miserable world), and so the ethical calculus falls upon the set of humans currently alive to determine how valuable that scenario is to them.

Am I meant to believe that the average human currently alive values an intergalactic future at thousands of times the value derived from their own existence? For the vast majority of people, that factor is probably in the ones and twos at most. I can think of many people I know personally for whom that factor is marginally negative.

somebodythere··on Crypto.com accounts had unauthorized withdrawals
Tornado Cash is a smart contract system that allows you to send fixed denominations of Ethereum, and receive a cryptographic "note" that allows someone who knows the note to withdraw the same amount of Ethereum from the smart contract.

Since zero-knowledge cryptography is used to ensure the generated note cannot be linked to the depositing transaction, it can be used to send money to yourself or another person without revealing the identity of the sender. There are criminal and non-criminal reasons to do this.

Because it is a smart contract system, you do not have to trust a person or organization with the money. You do have to trust the smart contracts defining the system are correct. The smart contracts are publicly available to read and have been reviewed by many people, including software audit organizations.

somebodythere··on Locked out of 'God Mode', runners are hacking their treadmills
That person would not win the lawsuit.
somebodythere··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
> Guess we gotta keep brainstorming for use cases -- that's how technology development works, right?

Unironically, yes.
