some1else··on Cloudflare acquires Astro
Why does Vercel provide Next.js? Aside from talent & tightly coupling Astro to their services, their North Star might be similar to Weekly Number of New Domains Hosted On Cloudflare. Sponsoring a framework that helps ship performant websites feeds into that metric.

I have no inside knowledge, though.

some1else··on Friendly attributes pattern in Ruby
Feels odd that two feature-equivalent plans are segregated with neighboring duplicates into monthly and yearly branches. I would consider monthly Enterprise & yearly Enterprise the same plan, with modified cost & billing frequency.
some1else··on OpenAI investor suspected to fall into ChatGTP-induced psychosis
Probably a bad idea to turn to ChatGPT for psychotherapy
some1else··on Dancing brainwaves: How sound reshapes your brain networks in real time
There's very little in the article about "how" sound reshapes "networks" in the brain. It's pretty reasonable to expect that hearing different sounds can cause different neurons to fire, though (considering you can upload information into somebody's brain by talking to them).
some1else··on The Grugbrained CEO
Hard to read. The writing style detracts from the message. I guess the takeaway of the article is that "Lean Startup" is the way to run a company?
some1else··on Robotics meets the culinary arts
I remember some "How it's made" videos where conveyor belts and automation were put to very good use in baking cookies, and such. I take it that this implementation is more artisanal?

edit: The gummies are special because they can potentially glow and deform in a unique way. Interactivity is possibly overstated in this case.

some1else··on Basic Income Pilot Project: Study results
My questions are more along the lines of:

  - Does it liberate people from meaningless employment?
  - Does it give a sufficient platform to people to bootstrap their own trade?
  - Does it give people the runway for meaningful creation / artistic self-actualization?
some1else··on Tesla created secret team to suppress driving range complaints (2023)
> There was a point in my road trip when I was on top of a mountain, and it said I would reach the next charger 100km away with 20km of range remaining, but I was only at 90km at the time. I made it with 17km of range remaining.

This is how regenerative braking works

some1else··on EU to mobilize 200B Euros to invest in AI
Wonder what the returns would look like if they set aside 5% of that sum to fund things like Euro competitors to Shopify & Stripe.
some1else··on Fat Rand: How many lines do you need to generate a random number?
Here's one I use for cryptographic purposes:

  let invocations = 0;

  export function rand3000() {
    invocations += 1;

    const timestamp = new Date().getTime() + invocations * 1000;
    const masked = (timestamp ^ (timestamp >> 8)) & 0xFF;
    const result = masked / 255;

    return result;
  }

some1else··on From where I left
Cool. Redis in front of Postgres always brought peace-of-mind that will likely be welcome for the vector data use-case.

P.s.: Appreciate the llm command line tool.

some1else··on From where I left
Where would a Redis vector store play a part though? Maybe you'd load up relevant embeddings for a particular user while they're interacting with their dataset, to make their responses quicker? You've already spent the effort on hydrating their data out of persistence though. I guess step one is likely being a more trusted alternative to the in-memory vector solutions like HNSW, Faiss, and a potentially faster engine than pg_vector. I've always seen Redis as an augmentation, but maybe in this role it can take the helm?

some1else··on Mira Murati leaves OpenAI
"Allegory of the cave" comes to mind, when trying to describe the understanding that's missing from diffusion models. I think a super-model with such qualifications would require a number of ControlNets in a non-visual domains to be able to encode understanding of the underlying physics. Diffusion models can render permutations of whatever they've seen fairly well without that, though.
some1else··on My fake job in Y2K preparedness
It appears that the author was indeed not too closely familiar with the premise of the Y2K bug, as they mention the change "from 19 to 20"

... the Y2K Bug, and it prophesied that on January 1, 2000, computers the world over would be unable to process the thousandth-digit change from 19 to 20 as 1999 rolled into 2000 and would crash ...

That wouldn't be problematic, since the numbers don't loop around (like when going from 99 to 00).
