sombremesa··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
There's no such thing as a "false flag", just as there's no such thing as a "false upvote". Fradulent? Abusive? Sure. But true/false implies these things are objective.
sombremesa··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
Thanks for addressing this. I think your approach of radical transparency goes a long way to quell paranoia around how HN works.
sombremesa··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
The answer to this is probably FOMO (and it does work against GP's argument) — the VCs who missed out on the hot new startup will want to get on the second best rocket.
sombremesa··on Why users are being kicked off Tinder and Fortnite without explanation
If you think of Tinder or Fortnite as your “home” as TFA suggests it’s kind of hard to sympathize.
sombremesa··on Ask HN: What's Up with Google?
DDG is also much worse if you Google things like “1 crore inr in usd.”
sombremesa··on How we bootstrapped our SaaS to $1M ARR
Is that what I said? I don't think that's what I said.

What I actually meant to say was that SV investing has ignored profit and looked at revenue for a while now.

sombremesa··on How we bootstrapped our SaaS to $1M ARR
> It's ridiculously hard to get to $1M ARR

This is a blanket statement and it’s very wrong.

Know better than to look at revenue versus profit. Then again, Silicon Valley seems to have long since given up on that idea!

sombremesa··on A $3B bet on finding the fountain of youth
Your mom’s a compiler.
sombremesa··on The tragic rape of Charles Bukowski’s ghost by Black Sparrow Press (2013)
> Altering a poem is a whole different animal than editing a book or a movie, for instance.

I don’t know about that. George Lucas has managed to butcher his own movies after the fact, and newer audiences would never know.

Hundreds of thousands of people still believe that “Go Set a Watchman” is a new book as opposed to the first draft of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

sombremesa··on They Say: Do Not Use Margins in CSS. How I Use Them Anyway
Since they needed to be, for clickbait.
sombremesa··on Wordle is being punished by app stores for choosing the open web
Something I've learned is that if people like the copycat enough, they will always defend it. That's what happened to Threes/2048, and that's what will happen here. The wiggle room between Lingo <-> Wordle is narrow compared to Threes <-> 2048, but people will find a way.

Interestingly, this means that copying stuff will not come back to bite you, even when you get popular - as long as you copy ideas and not assets/characters/etc.

sombremesa··on The optional chaining operator, “modern” browsers, and my mom
This seems like "IT-style" troubleshooting and fixing, and even then it seems half-hearted. Can't you install other browsers on iPad?

You could also install extensions like stylish on Chrome and fix it therein. You could try blocking the CSS file from loading. [0]

Sure, we can prioritize shitting on the people who made the site, or Apple, or Google, but then your mom continues to have this issue. Shouldn't fixing that be the first priority, even if it involves some hacks?

sombremesa··on macOS Is Hot Garbage
> First used a mac in 2021.

And there it is.

Nobody likes change. If you hate it so much, go back.

Sure, it has its issues, but people who've been using it for a while are VASTLY more qualified to comment on that. If I'm used to skateboarding and I hate my first experience driving a car, should Toyota make a gap in the floor so I can push along with my foot?

At least MacOS is big enough that people don't launch gigantic misguided attempts at a replacement and derail their lives, like that guy who tried to make a "distraction-free" Slack alternative.

sombremesa··on Leave a Good Legacy
I got the sense that the author doesn’t have a good grasp on engineering nor on business.
sombremesa··on Reddit ‘antiwork’ forum booms as millions of Americans quit jobs
> What a stupid post.

I don't think someone who puts this in their bio is qualified to make that comment:

> One of my favorite low key social engineering hacks is that I used to have a keylogger installed on every machine I own. Whenever a friend needs to hop on my machine to show me something, they'd log into an account they own and I would have their password.

You're lucky that not many people will tell you exactly what they think of that, thanks to HN guidelines.

sombremesa··on Ask HN: Is Substack worth the hassle in 2022?
That is such an awful URL.
sombremesa··on Ask HN: Is Substack worth the hassle in 2022?
If you read past the title it’s pretty clear OP is asking for a general opinion of substack from a content creators perspective.

Between "there's no guarantee that the message viewed by a user was actually written by the poster" and "You absolutely cannot fake a message being cryptographically signed without providing a broken verification function" you moved the goalposts so hard it gave me whiplash and I'm afraid I can't continue this discussion due to my concussion.

> in the end, there's no guarantee that the message viewed by a user was actually written by the poster

If you think about it, this is also true for web3 — true enough that it's broken.

We don't live in a world where you can't take things from people, etc.

Ultimately, society works because we don't really need ironclad guarantees — and we don't have any.

> While you're correct that a 4chan-like mechanism would provide a means of authentication, the hash would not be human-recognizable easily (basically, not meaningful)

This part can be addressed easily with avatars such as those Gravatar makes. Using a blockchain instead seems like a huge overkill, and also brings 'login' back into the equation, albeit with a different connotation than traditional login.

sombremesa··on Update: iPhone Camera app did not replace person's head with a leaf
I'm amazed that such stupid stuff takes up attention, and more importantly, takes up my attention. Thankfully it's just a minute or two, but clearly I need to be more careful about what I click on (and let into my head...I'm sure this type of thing degrades bayesian priors for everyone reading it).
sombremesa··on Companies that had successful pivots
> They swithed to battle royal and made one of the most played video game of all time.

More specifically, they saw the success of PUBG and decided to copy it immediately. I suppose that still counts as a successful pivot!

sombremesa··on Japan's Paper Culture
> Japan is, of course, just a place.

You allude to this later in your comment, but it really isn't when it comes to paper (and to some extent, cardboard).

The irony in your comment re:fetishizing is that TFA talks of traditions whereas you say things like:

> She had supernaturally neat handwriting

sombremesa··on Takeaways from looking for a new senior role in tech
+1, but that's the audience which makes this an article worth writing.

For people with strong resumes, it's hard to leave home without tripping on the offer letters jammed under your front door.

sombremesa··on A tracking device made by Apple is showing up in suspected crimes
It does. GP's entire argument is that power that can be abused should not exist.
sombremesa··on What Animals Think of Death
It’s likely even simpler than that. Animals live mostly by instinct. Predators usually sneak up on live prey and chase it, whereas scavengers will happily eat animals that are already dead. I’m willing to bet that the “play dead” strategy backfires spectacularly against vultures, for example.

It doesn’t take more than an encounter with a house cat to see how their hunting instincts work. They’re just not triggered by dead things.

sombremesa··on A tracking device made by Apple is showing up in suspected crimes
By this logic we should surrender our arms and legs as well, and really just die.
sombremesa··on Chaijs.com just let their domain expire
I don't know what kind of shop you're running where JS libraries are 'literally' getting blown out of water but I like it.
sombremesa··on Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
How is it incorrect? Short term gains are taxed the same as income, which is exactly what both of us are saying.

This is setup to favor people who don’t understand taxes, so they don’t screw themselves over. It ends up screwing people who do understand taxes.
