solstice··on My practical approach to surfing the web safely
I see that you reported and described this behavior over at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2061493

Interesting. From the response at bugzilla it seems that the feature is built on top of "FF accounts" (which I'll have to look into) and that the browser communicates directly with the Firefox sync servers. Meaning that only Mozilla would know your sync identity across containers. Did I get that right? Whether that's a privacy concern is something that I'll have to think about. What's your take?

solstice··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Not necessarily, but keeping an airgapped machine and Read-only backups somewhere seems more and more sensible. We're all going to get hacked eventually now
solstice··on Accelerando (2005)
I just reread Daemon and Freedom™. Highly recommended. They definitely hit different today than when I first read them in 2010 or thereabouts
solstice··on Dark Star (Film, 1974)
Oh wow, Dark Star has been in my to watch list for a while already.

The German dubbing of Monty Python's Life of Brian is hilarious too. It's as funny as the original and sometimes even better.

solstice··on Localsend: An open-source cross-platform alternative to AirDrop
I was too when due to network problems at our last traditional LAN-party (WC3, CS1.6 etc.) we used the hotspot feature of one phone to get everyone on a local network. I was skeptical and assumed the PCs wouldnt be able to see each other but lo and behold: it worked flawlessly!
solstice··on When your digital life vanishes
About the "locked" Thoughts.doc file: Shouldn't this be trivially crackable nowadays?
solstice··on Chernobyl wildlife forty years on
thank you. TIL. Hiking the Green Belt sounds like an interesting long-term hiking project
solstice··on AgentFM – A single Go binary that turns idle GPUs into a P2P AI grid
Having just reread Daemon by Daniel Suarez this hits differently. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daemon_(novel))
solstice··on Direct Win32 API, Weird-Shaped Windows, and Why They Mostly Disappeared
Oh yeah. Browsing the submissions and forums on customize.org are among my first forays into the internet.
solstice··on Fuck the cloud (2009)
Well have you uploaded them to archive.org?
solstice··on Netflix Prices Went Up Again – I Bought a DVD Player Instead
Maybe because they are significantly more finicky than DVDs to set up for playing in VLC for example. You need to download a key list of all released bluray movies from a slightly sketchy website, put it on a folder in the system somewhere and only then does it work.

I'm not sure if it's easier using jellyfin etc.

solstice··on RAM Has a Design Flaw from 1966. I Bypassed It [video]
Is there a reason you can think of why AMD, Intel etc. would not want to do this?

Really enjoyed the video and feel that I (not being in the IT industry) better understand CPUs und and RAM now.

solstice··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
The use of AI assistants in genealogy is interesting. There seems to be a lot of activity in that area
solstice··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
I dig the electroduotone. Congrats!

Have you heard of electronicos fantasticos? It's this band from Japan who make incredible music with instruments they made themselves.

solstice··on Haunted Paper Toys
Those look delightful! Eg for the next RPG session. On Google, the search term "papercraft" yields a lot of other results with easy to assemble models
solstice··on Book review: There Is No Antimemetics Division
The author changed names for the revised edition to increase the distance to the SCP wiki.
solstice··on Book review: There Is No Antimemetics Division
Isn't there also a physics angle to antimemes (as portrayed in TINAD)? Self-erasing information sounds like a reduction of entropy and should therefore be a violation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, no?
solstice··on If You Need a Laptop, Buy It Now
Thank you!
solstice··on Estonia to relaunch Skype as Europe's sovereign platform
Another reason is that "skyping" is such a cromulent word that event today I still catch me using it in conversation with colleagues and friends.
solstice··on If You Need a Laptop, Buy It Now
What models or classes of models would I be able to run on that hardware?

I've asked myself that question while looking at some of the models on this: site https://laptopparts4less.frl/index.php?route=common/home

solstice··on The Return of the Energy (as) Weapon
Article title is slightly misleading, as its meaning is "Energy as a weapon". So nothing about lasers etc.
solstice··on The Strait of Hormuz Oil Shock Is Now Heading West
I'd like some credible source for the Japan claim, please. Per https://www.jluggage.com/blog/fact-check/japan-buying-oil-in... it is a rumour.
solstice··on Personal Encyclopedias
With video gen AI you might even get an animated movie out of it...
solstice··on Personal Encyclopedias
wow, thank you!
solstice··on Personal Encyclopedias
I've also started thinking about this. Can you share some templates or other tips on how to do this?
solstice··on The EU still wants to scan your private messages and photos
The proposal was rejected: https://chaos.social/@maxim/116294966670838045
solstice··on Migrating to the EU
Oof, what a drag
solstice··on Oil and gas prices jump after Iran and Israel attack gasfields
Is there anyone here with a deeper understanding of oilfield geology and engineering? Given that:

- storage facilities in the region are limited and in some cases almost full

- mature oil fields need constant water injections to pump out the remaining crude

How likely is it that stopping crude extraction (and therefore the water injections) will permanently damage the oil reservoirs?

And based on that is it possible that countries with this type of mature oil fields would consider simply dumping the excess crude that can't be stored anymore in the desert or in the Gulf of Persia?

solstice··on Nightingale – open-source karaoke app that works with any song on your computer
Excited to try this out. How well does WhisperX deal with lyrics in say Mandarin or Cantonese? Does it output Hanzi?
solstice··on UK security adviser attended US-Iran talks and judged deal was within reach
If we finally get the broad roll-out of renewable energy out of this, that would be a silver lining to this horrible mess. I hope it is a "Things need to get worse to get better" type of situation.
