solsane··on Sorry Appin, we're not taking down our article about your attempts to silence
Another reason to feel good about donating to the EFF.
solsane··on Takkyu-bin: Luggage forwarding in Japan
Ok but can someone explain what this means
solsane··on ACT test scores for U.S. students drop to a 30-year low
As a TA the remote schooling definitely had an impact on the quality of incoming students.

solsane··on OpenAI confirms that AI writing detectors don’t work
Yeah, if there’s a way to discriminate AI from human writing that could also be used to train a better AI and become indistinguishable again.
solsane··on Ask HN: What are the big/important problems to work on?
I support all your action items but based on your preamble I was expecting something more along the lines of political engagement/activism.
solsane··on GirlfriendGPT – OSS AI Companion
Not so sure about that. Wendy's drivethrough chatbot is programmed to upsell. Even the base GPT is heavily tuned to cater to a corporate audience.
solsane··on JPMorgan Chase thought it had $1.3M worth of nickel – it were stones
I don’t know why reading ‘it were stones’ made me chuckle as much as it did.
solsane··on Cheating is All You Need
Have you played with ChatGPT or GitHub copilot? 5 years ago, I'd agree with you, but nowadays, 'cherry picked wins' happen far more often than not in my experience.
solsane··on What ChatGPT and AI-Based Program Generation Mean for Future of Software
It’s quite simple. If you’re doing something niche (ie, it would be difficult to find similar examples online), and deals with highly critical code, it’s probably worthwhile to write it yourself, since there’s a high risk for it to produce bugs.

In my experience this was the case for writing a block driver & some other low level software.

It excels and arguably outperforms in some developers in other cases; app development, CRUD, and CS labs it finds on github. There’s still a risk for bugs, but an acceptable level considering the productivity enhancement IMO.

solsane··on Winter Is Here: Slowing Down to Fight SAD
Psychologists, the least scientific form of scientists, use the term ‘disorder’ far too liberally if you ask me. The term has implications for how people view others with these diagnosis and how those people view themselves.

The term is borrows credibility from other parts of medicine. The term gives the impression of a ‘disease’, which a) we tend to think of as physiological and b) something foreign and unwanted in our body, and c) not normal. I have ADHD but none of the above describe my mental state when I’m off my medication.

I see the term ‘disorder’ in psychology often used to the effect of ‘basis for a prescription’. I’ll take the medication, improve my life, and leave the stigma of being ‘diseased’ behind.

solsane··on Ask HN: How to Go Back Home
I recently (last 6 months) went into tech away from my home town. (not too far; US town to different US town)

I’ve found life to be good here, but I can’t help but think I had it made in my home town: in terms of family (father recently got out of rehab, and despite his issues, I love him), Great long time friends, along with some love interests (left one behind that I felt like I really clicked with!). I don’t know, it felt like life was getting good for me for the first time in a long time, and then I left to go for the job offer I accepted out of school.

I certainly wouldn’t call myself depressed here, I’m active, see friends nearly every day. The town is really nice too. At the same time, I don’t feel the overwhelming sense of appreciation that I used to.

There are some good work opportunities there as well, although I’m not sure if the pay would be quite as good. I try to keep in touch with my friends from town but its already getting hard. I’m afraid that if I wait too long I wouldn’t have much to come back to. Simultaneously I don’t want to waste the time I’m investing in my new home.

Any thoughts hackers?

solsane··on AI-generated art sparks furious backlash from Japan’s anime community
There’s a notion that AI isn’t ‘creative’; it doesn’t ‘have a soul’; that it ‘just imitates’, as if we are uniquely capable of being creative. Yet, it seems increasingly clear to many of us ‘AI bros’ that this isn’t true.

For now, I largely agree with the critics. However, I think it won’t be long before these sorts of statements could be looked back upon as short sighted or even derogatory.

solsane··on Artificial Intelligence: The Revolution Hasn’t Happened Yet (2018)
Real neurons are far slower (interaction is chemical vs electrical) and far less precise ( iirc something comparable to 4 - 7x less precise than 32bit float) than physical neurons.
solsane··on Researchers Develop Transistor-Free Compute-in-Memory Architecture
Based on the diagram this does matmul like a resistive crossbar array (something like https://arxiv.org/pdf/1410.2031.pdf). Talked about this in a ‘neuroprocessor’ class I took at uni.

It’s practically ‘free’ since you perform multiplication by applying resistance to a current, and kirchoff’s law results in a sumnation of currents. Very elegant in concept.

That being said, when scaling this approach, I recall one paper saying they had serious issues with signal integrity, in part from analog process mismatch.

If this AlScN approach addresses that this would be really big. I’m interested to see if this can scale beyond a small model like mnist and also about how they map the weights.

solsane··on Legacy of Contamination:TN Kingston coal ash spill unearthed a nuclear nightmare
As a kid, I recall being told by camp counselors that we couldn’t canoe since ‘TVA’s been dredging and now the coal ash is mixed with nuclear waste’.
solsane··on Cloudflare's abuse policies and approach
I don’t follow this comparison. Seems like DDoS protection is a defensive measure.
solsane··on Cloudflare's abuse policies and approach
I feel like this should be the end of the discussion. A crime against a criminal is still a crime. Furthermore, who decides who the ‘criminal’ is? A ‘tit for tat’ policy may leave progressive activists and whistleblowers vulnerable to DDoS.
solsane··on Ask HN: What podcasts are you listening to?
There’s a chance podcasts aren’t for you. After listening to a couple briefly, I found I’m not interested in them. Subjecting myself to an oration from a single point of view, without comments feels like brainwashing to me, or at least very one dimensional. I’d rather spend that time in silence with my own thoughts.
solsane··on Deepfake Offensive Toolkit (real-time deepfakes for virtual cameras)
I disagree. The moral responsibility really rests on the person who uses the tool.

For instance, I once cheated by using gcc/godbolt to generate assembly output for a class from C code. By this logic, Richard Stallman should be blamed for my misconduct.

There are any number of reasons for supplanting another face onto your own, many of which are simply good fun. If you choose to use this for scamming or perverted reasons, so be it.

Moral posturing aside, perhaps there could be an invisible watermark or something included by default to easily identify less technically inclined actors as users of this tool.

solsane··on Inspired by Alabama’s union battle, Amazon workers elsewhere consider organizing
IMO, this would be a bad outcome for all parties involved. The jobs being replaced are highly tedious, ie, fold the box, put the thing in the box, repeat for next 8 hrs. Those displaced would likely find better jobs.
