soitgoes511··on Why strength training? A programmer's perspective
Or adjustable dumbbells.. Saves space and is more versatile. Expensive though. But, weights are in general now.
soitgoes511··on Formatted spreadsheets can still work in R
Yeah.. I believe this is to run R embedded in Tibco Spotfire (like Tableau or other BI software). We used to use this to pull and sanitize our data from our data warehouse into dataframes and then create our spotfire templates to run via webplayer.
soitgoes511··on Researchers claim first functioning graphene-based chip
Won't earn decent money? Have you ever worked for a big semi company? I have and that is simply not true. Niche, maybe... But, they did not skimp high performers regarding wage. Believe it or not, there are plenty of good software positions in semiconductors too..
soitgoes511··on Home Assistant 2023.11
I really appreciate both HA and ESPHome. The only gotcha I have encountered with ESPHome involved lost data with higher sampling rates (1 sample/0.2 second). To this day I am not sure what the issue was. I had better results with arduino framework vs esp-idf. Apart from that, it really does make spinning up a new sensor so easy and the OTA updates are excellent.
soitgoes511··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
Oh... I believe it.. Times have changed though. They cut back on travel, corporate crédit cards, etc. We would have no less than 2 cost marathons per year of all day meetings.
soitgoes511··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
They sure don't do that anymore... At least not at any of the Dallas factories. Even patents reap little money. You practically sell your soul when you join the company and all your ideas are theirs.
soitgoes511··on Veilid is an open-source, P2P, mobile-first, networked application framework
I haven't been able to. I attempted to yesterday also with no luck. Their site mentions availability after recovering from DEF CON or something to that affect.
soitgoes511··on For the first time, renewable energy generation beat out coal in the US
I don't know how anything I said was re-writing history. The fact was over half the reactors were down due to corrosion and need of maintenance, yes. There was indeed a push to get them back online. I am happy the nytimes and reuters gave you such an informed perspective. The fact is we needed the nuclear reactors back online or we wouldn't have had power in sub-freezing tempetatures. So, sure.. thank God for the renewables.
soitgoes511··on How to change the region on an HP OfficeJet printer in 57 easy steps
Yes.. It is near impossible to change a phone number for most accounts. My US banks would not allow for the same amount of digits as my European phone number had. Wiring money from my own accounts wanted to send a 4 digit pin to my US number which would not work in France. You seem to imply that in 2023, we are not capable of making a banking application accept more than one format of phone number. And the fact that google cannot figure out I live in another country (and I have to enter a bank card with address in an app store or else I am blocked from certain apps) is laughable.
soitgoes511··on For the first time, renewable energy generation beat out coal in the US
I love the idea of clean energy. But the energy "sobriety" we have been experiencing this year in France particularly has been painful. TF1 educated the population on the nightly news on how to block our door jams to not lose energy and warmth. Villages were creating centers for people to go and stay warm. Boulangeries have been shutting down because they cannot afford the still increasing cost of energy. Whatever the plan is, it currently isn't working.
soitgoes511··on For the first time, renewable energy generation beat out coal in the US
The point is that Europe does not have energy in general figured out. If I am being told I can be fined for having my thermostat higher than 19C (true for children school also), than we are far from that statement.
soitgoes511··on For the first time, renewable energy generation beat out coal in the US
Is this why we were having energy shortages during the winter time and there was a rush to get the nuclear reactors back online in France ? I don't consider that having, "it figured out". If you want to discuss prices.. my place of employment is paying millions more euro this year than last. The increase in energy cost is also leading to increase in water costs.. I could go on, but you get the point.
soitgoes511··on How to change the region on an HP OfficeJet printer in 57 easy steps
This is so true. We moved to another country and changing everything from my location in the google play store (requires a form of payment from the new country) to opening a second PayPal account with another email was painful. I still think the change of cell phone numbers was the worst. It seems the assumption with all applications is that we will be born and die with the same number now. I will have to memorialize my cell number on my tombstone.
soitgoes511··on France’s President Macron overrides parliament to pass retirement age bill
Well.. we need the money to pay for the Olympics next year. Priorities, you know?
soitgoes511··on Learn Vim (2021)
I have to switch back and forth between french (azerty) and english (qwerty) many times a day. My typing speed has regressed. But I manage just fine without hitting 200 wpm. How does one practice the constant switiching?
soitgoes511··on The Last Mustard Maker in Dijon
I live right next to Dijon (20 minute drive). I believe there are still several other mustard makers in the surrounding villages.
soitgoes511··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully started their career over in their 30s?
Twice since 30. I screwed up my entire younger years, went back to University after 30 to get a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked hard during university. I was hired on as an engineer making semiconductors for one of the largest analog semi's in the world. During the pandemic, I decided to start yet another career in another country.. Now I work as a technical electronics expert in the automotive industry...

So, yes.. It is very possible to do this. Like most things in life, you will have to work hard and make sacrifices.

soitgoes511··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
I bought a System76 Serval WS a few years ago and I have been happy with it. Battery life is not wonderful, but I knew that before the purchase. I will be buying another System76 next time around too.
soitgoes511··on S.F. police announce dozens of arrests in crackdown on retail theft
There are many areas of DFW that are not safe. Perhaps if you don't leave Preston Hollow, Highland Park or Mckinney.. But, there are many parts of the city that I wouldn't want to be on a Friday night (and definitely not my wife and kids). I lived in a decent area and there were frquent break-ins on North East Dallas. Had a double homicide down the street about a month before we relocated to Europe. But, you can keep telling everyone how friendly it is. I know better.
soitgoes511··on Ask HN: Anyone using proprietary Unix at work?
I worked in a semiconductor probe and test group and we had many older Teradynes connected to Sun computers running Solaris.. There were also old mainframes running Solaris (these were slowly being sunset but from my understanding, it was challenging due to many many cronjobs, etc..). We were tasked with keeping all systems up year round, which made any type of migration slow.
soitgoes511··on Open-source hospital price transparency
Thank you for asking. She is 24 hour ventilator dependent (spina bifida, chiari malformation, etc.. etc..). She just celebrated her 5th birthday last month. My wife and I hope she will be able to breath on her own someday too. As for bills, I would be shocked if I could not find any as we have piles of them. We have relocated to France, but had no outstanding balances before leaving. I have noted your email and will check our files for bills this weekend. I have absolutely no problem sharing them. Anything to bring light to the insanity and opaqueness of the US medical system.
soitgoes511··on Open-source hospital price transparency
Very true. The optional part comes in with the itemization of items in the hospital room like baby diapers or a tylenol. I would definitely bring my own if I knew the hospital would bill me (or my insurance), 800$ for a tylenol. I live in France now, so it is a different story (doctor shortage currently)..
soitgoes511··on Open-source hospital price transparency
I hope this succeeds. My daughter was born with many medical issues and understanding the billing was always near impossible. Nothing could be gleaned from the bills which would arrive 6 months to a year later (sometimes 2 years) from the insurance company. In what world can I not know the price of something before hand? If I go to a restaurant and see hamburgers cost 6000$, I wouldn't buy one. But with medical it is always a surprise.
soitgoes511··on My secret life as an 11-year-old BBS sysop
I have fond memories of those days.. Zmodem and xmodem protocols.. Vision/2 and Oblivion BBS software.. Acid and Ice were the stars in the ansi world. Scanning 950's for long distance calls.. and realizing that call waiting was not your friend when downloading big files..
soitgoes511··on The End of Duolingo?
I was just pushed into the new 'path' updated yesterday. So far, I am disappointed. I was unaware that this UI change was coming down the pipeline and it seems I am not the only disappointed user. I completely agree with the, 'If it isn't broke, don't fix it', take on this. My two cents for what little it is worth.
soitgoes511··on Voting from Antarctica
Non-trivial amounts of time? When I lived in the US, I would wake up and be at the DL location (Dallas Tx) at 5am. Not fun but doable and I would have my temporary ID the same day. I live in France now. It took me 9 months to receive a DL.. So a few hours waiting in line in the US is not so bad. So for me, the arguement that it is too time consuming to 'access' a form of identification is not reality. It sucks, it isn't fun. But you can get it done same day by sacrificing a little sleep. For a small fee I might add.
soitgoes511··on Phlare: open-source database for continuous profiling at scale
I have used Grafana in conjunction with Influxdb (1.x & 2.x), postgresql, mssql and mariadb with little issue for ~5 years. I have not dipped my toes in the water experimenting with the log aggregators. Some of the 3rd party plugins have been difficult to use and there are some odd bugs here and there (histograms on older versions finding the proper xmin and xmax). What specifically has been confusing?
soitgoes511··on Nobody wants touch-screen glove box latches
Amen! Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.
soitgoes511··on French police probe multiple cuts of major Internet cables
I live in Bourgogne (FR) and indeed, we lost internet and phone service for ~1hour last night at 21h00 CEST Service provider is Free.
soitgoes511··on The Fundamentals of Control Theory
