softg··on LeoLM: German-Language LLM Research
> Its similar to how high verbal IQ people can easily master multiple languages, but normal people are only good at their main language.

How? Are you implying "high verbal IQ people" have bigger "models" in their heads somehow?

Slightly related dumb question, I saw on GitHub that TensorFlow has Java support. Does anyone actually use TensorFlow with Java?

softg··on Rethinking the Luddites
I'm not aware of a violent non-state actor that exclusively or primarily attacks the means of production instead of military personnel and regular civilian targets. Is there any?
softg··on Rethinking the Luddites
> understand your point of view if you're from a first-world country and you never experienced the terror of having people interfering with the means of production.

Do you mean a strike? A very common event in many first-world countries like the US or France ?

softg··on BlackRock Conquered the World – The Corbett Report
Looking at the beginning of the transcript, where they point out all these corporations owned by BlackRock, it's funny that the Vanguard Group owns a bigger share of each one of them.
softg··on Update on KDP Title Creation Limits
The problem is advanced LLMs are controlled by large corporations. Powerful local models exist (in part thanks to Meta's generosity oddly enough) and they're close to GPT-3.5, but GPT-4 is far ahead of them and by the time other models reach to that point whatever OpenAI or Antropic, Meta etc. have developed behind closed doors could be significantly better. In that case open models will be restricted to niche uses and most people will use the latest model from a giant corp.

So it is possible that LLMs will centralize the production and dissemination of knowledge, which is the opposite of what people think the printing press did. I hope I'm wrong and open models can challenge/overtake state of the art models developed by tech giants, that would be amazing.

>I was idly wondering, today, if the capitalism was supercharged by the Protestant notion of idle-hands are sinful-hands?

German sociologist Max Weber was wondering the same question about a century ago and wrote a whole book about it called "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism". The part where he talks about the Protestant notion of calling comes very close to what you described.

I read it a decade ago so the details are a bit fuzzy but I think the gist of it was it's super difficult to get into the heaven in Protestantism (it's actually pre-determined in Calvinism I think) and one needs to devote themselves to some task to avoid sinful earthly distractions. Also charitable works are kinda meaningless because only through faith you can be saved. So you have all these people who work all the time and who do not spend that much on poor people or themselves which helps with capital accumulation. Also with that mindset business becomes an end into itself that should be pursued for its own good so Weber thought this fostered the separation of personal affairs and business iirc.

softg··on Tomorrow’s Democracy Is Open Source
I am not sure this is a good idea. Correct me if I'm wrong but LLMs or NNs in general can not be open source the way a traditional software product is i.e. you can't inspect the code to see what it's exactly doing and why. You can only test them and apply benchmarks but these tests can be manipulated. Can we ever trust a LLM the way we trust a regular computer program?
softg··on Are any words the same in all languages?
Luckily arrow in Turkish rhymes with 'woke' so the two are not easily confused. The most common Turkish word for okay is also a loanword from Arabic.
