soft_dev_person··on The smug style in American liberalism
After Brexit, the smugness continued. Remain supporters took the campaign for a revote that got millions of signatures as a sign people were regretting, but obviously the signatures mostly were from people who had voted to remain.

Still, "they regret it already" was the message spreading throughout Europe for a while. I recently saw some research stating that a very small percentage had changed their mind about the vote, and they came more or less equally from both sides. So no, no significant regret noticed.

Not sure why I'm writing this. It just seems that the people seeming to vote rationally are completely irrational when it comes to judging the other side. Did we collectively lose the skill of empathy?

We need to understand this or we'll be repeating these mistakes forever.

soft_dev_person··on Battery Status API being Removed from Firefox due to Privacy Concerns
Couldn't a new API be added where web apps can subscribe to critical battery level warning events? Would be a lot less useful for tracking, but still serve the purpose intended for the original API.

Probably already on the way.

soft_dev_person··on No Man’s Sky – Procedural Content
It's almost surreal reading this. I've been mostly out of the gaming scene for years, just sporadically playing some Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy.

I just recently got a gift card and bought myself the PS4. Got No Man's Sky for an OK price, and had absolutely no expectations since I haven't followed game news whatsoever.

The result is I really love NMS. Its pace is perfect for me (I usually hate FPS, or first person games in general). It's about exploration and seeing new things and getting that sense of freedom to travel wherever you want in a massive space. I think they do that very well.

Yet, it's apparently a "clusterfuck". So weird.

To be critical, there is mostly two things that is somewhat of an annoyance, and that is too limited inventory space, making inventory management a too large part of the game, and the apparent lack of variety in buildings and structures. I say apparent, as I haven't explored that much of it yet, but until now all spacestations have had the same entrance interior, which is a bit boring. So yes, some things are repetitive.

But, still a good game. If anyone has skipped it due to negative reviews based on hype, please take another look and make up your own mind. Maybe your expectations will be more appropriate now.

soft_dev_person··on Why a Brit chose to start a business in Berlin
I like how you just appended an entire country to that list of cities =)
soft_dev_person··on Workplace by Facebook opens to sell enterprise social networking to the masses
Norway is one of the major beta markets and full of early adopters. Though some of the companies among them likely just want to be one of the cool kids.
soft_dev_person··on All you wanted to know about ‘all-hands’ meetings
Probably, but in reality it's either used as an opportunity for upper management to pat themselves on the back in front of all the employees, or to ask everyone to "walk the extra mile" (for the nth time) because business is going awry.
soft_dev_person··on All you wanted to know about ‘all-hands’ meetings
I would leave any company with singalong sessions. shudder
soft_dev_person··on The Free-Time Paradox in America
I second that. Also, we don't all have perfect lives. Sometimes an escape (TV, getting high, whatever) is the best use of our time to stay somewhat sane.
soft_dev_person··on Companies would benefit from helping introverts to thrive
Then again, we act like straight people a lot.
soft_dev_person··on Berlin’s Startup Hub Wants to Prove It’s More Than Just a Scene
True, but you'll still not be completely integrated on a social level until you speak the native language.
soft_dev_person··on Google deletes artist’s blog, a decade of his work
Nice tool, and can produce archive directly to Dropbox (or Drive, or OneDrive).

Now, if they only could add a periodic option...

soft_dev_person··on Google deletes artist’s blog, a decade of his work
They closed his email-account too, though? It has never occurred to me to backup my entire Gmail archive. Should probably look into that now...
soft_dev_person··on My best employee quit because I wouldn’t let her go to college graduation
The cynic in me is divided on the issue.

There are certainly trolls out there who could conjure such a story just for the heck of it, but I also believe there are people out there who would do this for real.

Also, some companies don't hire very often, so the seniority part is not the biggest red flag.

The fact that a concert was concidered more important than a graduation ceremony "because cost" might be the biggest red flag for me.

soft_dev_person··on The most alienating thing that happened to me as a female engineer
As a male who hates sports, I can relate. However, it has nothing to do with gender.

The inappropriate touching in car event was more worrying, I think.

soft_dev_person··on Women Who Code (YC S16) helps female engineers level up in their careers
As a programmer and nerd (who happens to be male but it's not really relevant in this context) I can relate to the expectations of career advancement meaning moving into management and away from the joys of diving deep into the technical aspects and solving technical problems.

I just want to be a great programmer, and would've loved a way to signal advancement of career without moving into people management or sales. Not so many work places support this beyond "senior developer/sw engineer", though.

soft_dev_person··on A Proposal for an Antifragile Software Manifesto
After reading that, the world is now cyan. Thanks.
soft_dev_person··on How Far Is Europe Swinging to the Right?
The Left's response is to call anyone from a mildly concerned citizen to a full out racist the same thing.

That was probably very rightist of me, but I'm currently very frustrated at the level of the debate here in Europe. Even legitimate concerns (on both sides) are responded to (by both sides) with polarizing s*.

Edit: And the media fuels the fire. For clicks.

soft_dev_person··on Rails has won: The Elephant in the Room
I don't disagree, but your last point is rather misleading as Java on Github also includes pretty much all Android projects.
soft_dev_person··on I'm a fucking webmaster
Today we have a huge generic image with one-three words not really stating much and sometimes an indication that you need to start scrolling to actually read something.

Or was that last year.

soft_dev_person··on The Facebook Papers, Part 1: The great unbundling
My understanding is that publishers can put their own ads in the instant articles, too. Unless that possibility is revoked, they still get ad views per article view.
soft_dev_person··on Michael Bloomberg: Why Safe Spaces Are Terrible Mistakes
There's a fine line between "safe space" and "echo chamber", then.
soft_dev_person··on Hire characters, not skill sets. My most important questions in interviews
I guess, as a person not in the SV sphere, I don't really agree. Maybe I missed the implied SV context.
soft_dev_person··on Hire characters, not skill sets. My most important questions in interviews
Getting that close to all my coworkers would be too daunting a task.

Edit: Not to belittle your son's wisdom, of course. I totally agree.

soft_dev_person··on Hire characters, not skill sets. My most important questions in interviews
So all interviewers are male, white upper-middle-class with a fondness for beer?

Good to know.

soft_dev_person··on Hire characters, not skill sets. My most important questions in interviews
Being friends with colleagues can lead to less enjoyable work situations, not to mention less focused work.

Being friendly should suffice, not all of us want to get too personal with the same people we might need to have professional arguments with.

We're all different.

soft_dev_person··on Being a Developer After 40
Heh, I guess I have no excuse, then =)
soft_dev_person··on Being a Developer After 40
I guess my current strategy for handling social dynamics (as an introvert) is not doing me any favours. I usually get quite close (in a professional context) to 1-3 co-workers and have most of my interaction at work with them. All others I keep at a distance. Then again, social interactions with people I don't know very well is really draining for me, and I can't spend that kind of energy at work.

I've always done this, though. I have a few friends that are very close, that I can count on for life, even if I don't "nurture" the relationships continuously. But making new friends is really hard.

Thanks for the advice, though.

soft_dev_person··on Being a Developer After 40
Thanks a lot for elaborating. I suspect I need to get over my social challenges to make something like this work. And probably move (or travel more) to places where these gatherings actually happen. I live in a "technological desert" at the moment, which is a challenge in itself.
soft_dev_person··on Being a Developer After 40
It may be obvious (i.e. general networking effects), but what dynamic let c) give you work and freedom? Please elaborate.

As a coder who really dread interacting with people (especially non-technical people) in the context of work, I'd like to know how this advice would change my life.

soft_dev_person··on React Native: A year in review
I've tried a couple cross platform frameworks (mostly Xamarin and PhoneGap/Cordova) and am aware of some challenges there.

To me, Xamarin is like programming for each platform, just in C# and with another layer of bugs (and weirdness, I would say, and don't even mention Xamarin Forms). Of course, you get the possibility to share BL in a common layer, but pay for it in terms of instability and complexity to get stuff working native-like. Good for trivial GUI, BL-heavy apps I guess, but not for complex GUI, little shared BL apps.

PhoneGap/Cordova has some serious complications when it comes to predictable rendering due to the plethora of possible rendering engines you may encounter. Any non-trivial layout/styling can be completely messed up on different platforms, or even different versions of the same platform. Also it can be a challenge to achieve native performance and feel.

How would you say React Native compares?

It seems it could be more able to adapt to the platform compared to PhoneGap/Cordova, and easier (perhaps) to work with than Xamarin.

I'm considering using it in an upcoming project where both Android and iOS are required, and given my lack of iOS-experience, it seems like a good alternative.
