soferio··on Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else
Do five star crash test ratings therefore overstate the COMPARATIVE safety of small cars? Or do they account for the risk reduction of larger cars? Eg https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings?is_current_model=tru...
soferio··on The Berkeley Crossword Solver
Crossword genius is outstandingly good at cryptics.
soferio··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
Proraso anti-bleeding gel is the best thing I have found for razor cuts. It dries into a transparent artificial scab.
soferio··on Show the case against
And you might find the following interesting:

- Wikipedia entry for “groupthink“ and the ways of preventing it.

- The Israeli “10th man doctrine” and “Ipha mistabra”, as one technique (perhaps this is real, and not just a feature of the plot of world War Z).

soferio··on What it means to teach gifted learners well
Re AOPS: their online “beast academy” service for primary kids is unbelievably good. https://beastacademy.com/
soferio··on How A.I. Conquered Poker
What teaching or training tools are out there for a very average player at no limit Texas hold’em who just wants to get at bit better to a respectable level at a modest time commitment , and does not need to be a pro-level player?
soferio··on Show HN: Sioyek – PDF viewer for reading research papers and technical documents
Liquidtext is a commercial multiplatform app with some similar and interesting functionality.
soferio··on Changes to LastPass Free
We’ve been using LastPass without real issues of any variety (inc speed) on: Mac, iOS, windows 10. Sharing feature working well.
soferio··on Papercraft Models of Computers
Wow, what a fantastic idea. There goes the weekend.
soferio··on NovelWriter 1.0 – A markdown-like editor for writing novels
Looks great. I would be delighted to have the small task of converting to docx when the big task of actually writing a novel is made easier by this and finished! (Also python has docx libraries so docx is unlikely to be too much trouble in due course). Well done!
soferio··on Ask HN: Please share your experience teaching your kids to program
I got a raspberry pi to boot up into Commodore 64 BASIC. My son got into it pretty quickly. We then moved to python and scratch. Scratch has been the most addictive so far.
soferio··on Show HN: 02Books – An open source web app to teach kids to read
MVP Like this? I made it for my son: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/word-magic-toddler-reading-and...
soferio··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Happy user here too. Well done! I wish you had an iOS version. Cheers.
soferio··on Rga: Ripgrep, but also search in PDFs, E-Books, Office documents, zip, tar.gz
Can it (or any tool) perform proximity searches on scanned PDFs? E.g word1 within 20 words of word2, on scanned PDFs? (I think this is non trivial but very useful.)
soferio··on 30 years later, QBasic is still the best
A Commodore 64 emulator on a raspberry Pi connected to the family TV is what I used, with similar results. My boy was instantly programming and in awe of all the magic the words could weave. Boot straight into BASIC.

soferio··on Show HN: validator.py -- data/form validation in python
This looks really useful for validating rest endpoint data. Thanks!
soferio··on Come support the Practical Flask book on Kickstarter
This is a great idea. You have my $10.

(FWIW, advanced Flask-SQLAlchemy topics (relationsips, queries, association tables, alembic etc) and also security issues (what to watch out for with Flask, jinja and WTForms if anything) would be my picks for useful chapters.)

soferio··on Building a Modern Computer from First Principles
If you don't need to go as deep or as far, you might want to consider 'Code' by Charles Petzold: http://www.charlespetzold.com/code/

I found it great read and it covers some of the ground of this course.
