sodapopcan··on Many Small Queries Are Efficient in SQLite
It's inline with what I perceive as the more informal tone of the sqlite documentation in general. It's slightly wordier but fun to read, and feels like the people who wrote it had a good time doing so.
sodapopcan··on You can't pay me to prompt
You hit on something key here: the vast majority of the pro-articles are talking in the context of code vomit or content vomit or other types of vomit. As you say, it is beyond tiring, so we respond. I'm still waiting for that cancer cure!

> it's only been that person limiting it's own growth and productivity.

Maybe limiting raw productivity, but I sure don't buy that it limits growth. Maybe if all you ever did was copy and paste off of SO, but taking the time to study and deeply understand something is going to be much better for your overall growth. Also collaborating with humans instead of robots is always nice.

sodapopcan··on You can't pay me to prompt
> Eh, like everything on the Internet, the anti crowd is becoming more obnoxious than the pro crowd ever was.

In your highly objective opinion, of course.

sodapopcan··on You can't pay me to prompt
I'm not, I'm tired of hearing about it. If someone is forcing you to read these articles then that sounds like you are in a really shitty situation. Blink twice if you need help.
sodapopcan··on European Alternatives
Whoa, was unaware of this! Thanks!

And who's to say it's not going to happen again in 2030?

I hate to sound like a 19 year old on Reddit but:

AI People: "AI is a completely unprecedented technology where its introduction is unlike the introduction of any other transformative technology in history! We must treat it totally differently!"

Also AI People: "You're worried about nothing, this is just like when people were worried about the internet."

sodapopcan··on Your brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of cognitive debt when using an AI assistant
You never quite learn things are well when you just read, though. I know no one really cares these days, though (sincerely).

> My "actual job" isn't to write code, but to solve problems.

You're like 836453th person to say this. It's not untrue, but many of us will take writing over reviewing any day. Reviewing is like the worst part of the job.

sodapopcan··on What if AI is both good and not that disruptive?
Interesting! Though I will hold out for the "you're prompting it wrong" comments.
sodapopcan··on What if AI is both good and not that disruptive?
Absolute possible. They also could have just made a typo while typing a comment on a casual internet forum, which is also perfectly acceptable.
sodapopcan··on What if AI is both good and not that disruptive?
Ya, sorry, I'm in a mood.

But logically, calculators only do math, and they have primitive inputs that aren't going to match exactly what is on the sheet for anything other than THE most simplest of equations. You can't talk to a calculator in natural language, you have to learn how to use one (kind of like a ahem programming language). I never found calculators helped me "cheat" at math, it was still hard.

sodapopcan··on What if AI is both good and not that disruptive?
Conversely, if it drives us back to pen and paper for many things, I see that as a win.
sodapopcan··on What if AI is both good and not that disruptive?
You can't be serious...
sodapopcan··on Vibecoding #2
Hush, child.

You're a little too focused on my dig about it being a "sometimes better search" which is fair.

I'm not going to be sending money every month to billion dollars companies who capitulate to a goon threatening to annex my country. I accept whatever consequences that has on my programming career.

sodapopcan··on Vibecoding #2
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Wasn't my point.
sodapopcan··on Vibecoding #2
I am. I use Deepseek and free-tier ChatJippity and as a sometimes-better search.

EDIT: I also wasn't going to say it but it's not about the money for me, I just don't want to support any of these companies. I'm happy waste their resources for my benefit but I don't lean on it too often.

sodapopcan··on Vibecoding #2
I'm a developer.

I do not pay for any AI nor does my employer pay for it on my behalf. It will stay this way for as long as I can make that work while remaining employed.
sodapopcan··on How AI destroys institutions
Exactly! Was going to make a similar comment if I didn't already see one. People keep saying things like this and drives me fuckin' nuts. It's not that there are no positives but I don't see how the positives outweigh the negatives.
sodapopcan··on Show HN: I quit coding years ago. AI brought me back
LOL, I meant for a living but I enjoyed reading this nevertheless :D

But ya, I was out of work for 9 months and enjoyed pretty much every minute of it up until I realized it was not as easy to find a job as I thought it would be (well, it played out a bit differently but for the sake of brevity I'll stick that story)

sodapopcan··on Show HN: I quit coding years ago. AI brought me back
I've intentionally spent my entire career as an IC. I have a few ideas but ya, I've never even done the grind. My only dependent is a pug, though, so it's not like I don't have ANY time.
sodapopcan··on Show HN: I quit coding years ago. AI brought me back
Why would flagging be inappropriate?
sodapopcan··on Show HN: I quit coding years ago. AI brought me back
I'm in a similar position. At some point in the past few months I just stopped coding in my hobby time altogether. I'm almost 45 and not sure what else I could do, though. Hope you figure something out!
sodapopcan··on AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage
Ya, no shit! Just like "we should just" solve the socio-economic problems as if they didn't go hand-in-hand (I realize I'm paraphrasing OP a bit).
sodapopcan··on AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage
> But history shows nearly every time a tool makes people more efficient, we get more jobs, not less.

I hope so, but you have any ideas what they could be? This time feels different, especially because all the ultra-pro-AI people keep saying that "this time it's different" from a technological revolution. This is aiming to replaces people across many industries whereas historically it has been in smaller increments as new inventions are (more slowly) rolled out.

sodapopcan··on AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage
What will not be shittier about it? What do you envision these jobs are that are going to replace the current ones?
sodapopcan··on AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage
This isn't a conversation, lol.

I don't have much to offer here (and yes, sorry, after I made my snarky remark I realize you had indeed read the article). I recognize AI's capabilities but mainly don't use it primarily for political reasons but also because I just enjoy writing code. I'll sometimes use up the chatgpt free limit using it as a somewhat better search engine (and it's not always better) but there's no way I'm paying for agents, which is everything to do with where the money is going, not the money itself. Of course there are other reasons outside of how AI is used by programmers that would derail the general theme of these threads.

I'm just drawn to these threads for the drama and sometimes it triggers me and I write a snarky throwaway comment. If the discussions, and particularly the companies themselves, could shift to actual societal good it can do and how it is concretely getting there, that would hold my attention. Instead we get Sona etc.
