sodality2··on Flattening Rust’s learning curve
That’s not a solution to the coloring problem any more than making everything red was in 2015 (ie, all the tradeoffs mentioned in the article [0] still apply).

A large application, maybe, but sometimes you have a very small scope application that won't otherwise use async, so you value binary size, compile time, etc over theoretical XXX ops/sec
sodality2··on Buffett to step down following six-decade run atop Berkshire
It is still logical for someone of any tax bracket to advocate for raising tax rates, while paying their owed taxes and not paying any more.
sodality2··on Judge rules Apple executive lied under oath, makes criminal contempt referral
> Apple chooses the default and integrates it into the OS more deeply than any third-party app can be integrated

And this is well known by everyone, and your family still chose Apple (in fact, I'm fairly certain this is why most people choose Apple - they want everything to "just work"). Apple has no obligation to provide any "ecosystem".

At the end of the day there isn't some mass hypnosis at work here. People choose Apple en masse because it works for them. Nothing stops Apple users from making an SMS (now RCS) group chat, either, nor from you and your family hosting a group chat on any other app on the App Store.

sodality2··on Judge rules Apple executive lied under oath, makes criminal contempt referral
> Family group chats that require a blue-bubble-capable phone

This is a social walled garden they've built over years and has been solidified by users choosing it over and over again. Are they exploiting our brain's capacities regarding social pressure to extract profit? Sure, but so does every fast food company, social media company, marketing company, etc.

I think it's interesting that you phrase it as "require" regarding a group chat made by your family members. Apple doesn't require this, your family members chose Apple when they purchased their phones.

sodality2··on I can't pay rent because devs just don't care
> From what I can tell, Android can't even play two audio streams at once.

This is purely design-decision-based, it has nothing to do with the limitations of the hardware. A laptop with a weaker CPU than a flagship Android could probably stream and play hundreds of audio streams (no promise it'll sound coherent, though).

sodality2··on TikTok is harming children at an industrial scale
Jonathan Haidt has written and published huge amounts of posts, papers, and an entire book targeting social media and technology as a whole (not shying away from American-owned media, if anything, specifically targeting them). Literally yesterday, he published the same format of post against Snapchat [0]. Why does reading a single post targeting one social media destroy any credibility at all?

sodality2··on Jellyfin as a Spotify alternative
Personally I switched Navidrome since I found the clients to be better and the scanner to be lighter, but there's a few things I miss: casting was nice, as well as centralizing my media on one everything-app.
sodality2··on How to Bike Across the Country
Wow, I grew up in Yorktown and I remember seeing a lot of tour bikers. Never thought twice about it until now, seems like it's largely a result of the TransAmerica trail. Hope you enjoyed Colonial Williamsburg + Yorktown Beach!
sodality2··on PEP 750 – Template Strings
That's such a small scope of an addition I don't see the comparison. I suppose overloading arbitrary types with it can sometimes make the actions performed opaque.

sodality2··on Self-Driving Teslas Are Fatally Rear-Ending Motorcyclists More Than Any Other
Statistically it does matter. If FSD has a 1-in-100M miles driven chance of killing a motorcyclist, and FSD drives 10M miles a day, within 10 days it's likely to see a trend starting. Whereas XYZ other brand may have a 1-in-30M miles driven chance of killing a motorcyclist, but only drives 1M miles a day, so without adjusting, FSD is more dangerous, but in reality, XYZ is.
sodality2··on Dow plunges 2,200 points, Nasdaq enters bear market
Yes, you can short a total US market ETF. Or just exit the market and be prepared to enter when the floor is hit (impossible, unless you have outsider knowledge).
sodality2··on Show HN: OpenNutrition – A free, public nutrition database
Some kind of fall-back mechanism would be nice, then, maybe? As someone who does indeed want it to be accurate, I would prefer to use OFF for any food which exists within their database, since it tends to be much more accurate (and maybe fall back to "AI search" if I want to look up "apple" or whatever).

I understand that most people probably consume more whole foods that might not have the cut-and-dry numbers on OFF. It just does feel like a big lacking feature to just categorically exclude OFF, if I wanted to use it.

Many items do have these things.

sodality2··on Show HN: OpenNutrition – A free, public nutrition database
I have to say, irrespective of any concerns about the LLM-generated content, the actual app alone (goal-setting, macro tracking, etc) is the best free iOS-based nutrition-tracking app I've ever used, at first use. It's actually shockingly hard to find good, free (or even one time payment!) ones that don't constantly nag you to upgrade and paywall. I would pay a lot (once) for a nutrition/weight tracking app as slick as this, with all of the goal setting, data graphs, etc, that uses the OpenFoodFacts database, not your own. (Soliciting suggestions!) Please consider making the AI features optional and instead using the OFF database as the primary source.

Also, looks like the Apple Health option in Settings actually opens the start-of-week settings modal.

sodality2··on KOReader: Open-Source eBook Reader
Got this on my Kindle after the jailbreak came out in January. It's fantastic, especially the OPDB index + self hosted calibre-web means I can just download an epub on any device, drop it on a webpage, then search it on KOReader immediately. I did not want to use USB or Amazon's plumbing to transfer, so this is great. Tons of customization over the built-in reader.
sodality2··on Debian bookworm live images now reproducible
Let’s say a compiler is doing something in a multi-threaded manner - isn’t it possible that ASLR would affect the ordering of certain events which could change the compiled output? Sure you could just set threads to 1 but there’s probably some more edge cases in there I haven’t thought of.
sodality2··on The surreal joy of having an overprovisioned homelab
If someone works on and tweaks and gets to know their 25 year old econo beater, I don't think anyone has the right to say they aren't a car enthusiast. It's less about the horsepower (or ghz) and more about the passion put into it. For example you could add an ad-blocking DNS server on your devices and it would work just fine - but if you put in the effort to self-host it, even on a Pi, it's (IMO) a home lab.
sodality2··on Samsung Q990D unresponsive after 1020 firmware update

sodality2··on Despite the hype, DOGE hasn't found a shred of fraud
Trump himself from this article: "And they’re finding what will be hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of fraud — I say waste and abuse."
sodality2··on Turning a Bluetooth device into an Apple AirTag without root privileges
An interesting thing to note from the article is that this isn't just a garden variety jailbreak/adversarial interoperability with a BLE protocol. It lets you turn someone else's device into an airtag, then track its location.

> In addition, we appreciate the help from the Apple Security Team for their prompt responses and acknowledgement. Apple recently released patches in iOS 18.2, visionOS 2.2, iPadOS 17.7.3, 18.2, watchOS 11.2, tvOS 18.2, macOS Ventura 13.7.2, Sonoma 14.7.2, Sequoia 15.2 to fix the vulnerability. However, the attack remains effective as long as unpatched iPhones or Apple Watches are in the proximity of the computer running our trojan.

Seems like a pretty bad vulnerability to just hope 1.5B iPhones alone update soon enough. I know people still on iOS 17/16... All of them are now complicit.

But I'm happy to see my state represented in security research :)

sodality2··on AI's Biggest Flaw? The Blinking Cursor Problem
> If it is, why did no one person team disrupt and totally take over any market anywhere these past couple of years?

If AI is revolutionary, yet ubiquitous (anyone can visit chatgpt.com right now), there won't be these runaway winners in a specific industry; at best, new branches of industries will grow rapidly, and perhaps within an industry progress will intensify.

sodality2··on Docker limits unauthenticated pulls to 10/HR/IP from Docker Hub, from March 1
Nope, just validating the "OSS projects moving to other equivalents" - though it's always a concern!
sodality2··on Docker limits unauthenticated pulls to 10/HR/IP from Docker Hub, from March 1
One of the first things I did was move to Quay.io which is unlimited everything for OSS projects. I was reaching a point where I had 1M+ pulls a month (I suspect some kind of DDoS, accidental or otherwise, for a project with just 1.7k stars) - and not having to even think about the bandwidth or anything was wonderful. It's nice to be supported by Red Hat which I generally consider more benevolent towards OSS as opposed to Docker Hub.
sodality2··on Docker limits unauthenticated pulls to 10/HR/IP from Docker Hub, from March 1
If you specify the fully qualified image location then it's irrelevant. It's only when you decide to use short hand that it comes into concern
