sockaddr··on A case for Go as the best language for AI agents
> If you're not being paid well, what's the motivation to post things you know don't make any sense to try and sell a brand?

Because it works. Because it does in fact make sense despite your frustration with the concept.

sockaddr··on A case for Go as the best language for AI agents
This is quite sad to see someone react to a comment they disagree with by assuming that different opinion is paid for. I'd love it if you dug into my comment history and found even a shred of evidence that I'm being paid to talk positively about my programming language of choice.

I hope there aren't many of your type on here.

sockaddr··on A case for Go as the best language for AI agents
Exactly. Here's my experience using LLMs to produce code:

- Rust: nearly universally compiles and runs without fault.

- Python,JS: very often will run for some time and then crash

The reason I think is type safety and the richness of the compiler errors and warnings. Rust is absolutely king here.

sockaddr··on Is Show HN dead? No, but it's drowning
I suspect a more general and much more clever learning algorithm will emerge by then and will require less training data to get to a competent problem solving state faster even with dirty data. Something able to discriminate between novel information and junk. Until then I think there will be a quality decline after a few more years.

Sorry but for $5 in credits you can have an agent port over all your bullshit to the next fad. I'll have one port over all my bullshit when the time comes too.
sockaddr··on Apple's latest attempt to launch the new Siri runs into snags
The sad part about this fact is that the tech is mated to a completely rotten ecosystem. If it were sold off I'd be excited to try it.
sockaddr··on Apple's latest attempt to launch the new Siri runs into snags
Exactly. What Meta accomplished could have been done by a team of less than 40 mediocre engineers. It’s really just not even worth analyzing the failure. I am in complete awe when I think about how bad the execution of this whole thing was. It doesn’t even feel real.

sockaddr··on Gourmand Syndrome
Haha. I try to use they/them/their instead of he/her/him etc as a way of keeping stories a little more anonymized but I suppose it could be confusing.

I am curious, do other people find this style of writing confusing? Genuinely curious.

sockaddr··on Gourmand Syndrome
Possibly related anecdote:

I have a family member that has struggled to hold jobs and keep relationships, and seems to have had a learning disability their entire life, and potentially had brain damage early in childhood (due to lack of oxygen at birth, and being tasked with burning the family's trash out back (self-reported)).

I recently moved them into my house because they had nowhere to go and they are now completely obsessed with preparing elaborate dishes, growing fermented foods and carefully curating their microbiome (by doing dubious stuff they find on YouTube). This syndrome feels very much like what this family member is doing but the rarity makes me think it's probably not this.

It's to the point where their room is full of jars of nuts, fermented items, and they go into detail describing the pleasure of the textures/tastes of food and how much of a treat it is for them to enjoy random everyday things normal people eat.

My wife and I physically cringe when they talk about it in the kitchen given that they put more energy into this than seeing their own grandchildren, keeping jobs, or helping around the house.

sockaddr··on YouTube has removed the ability to search by upload date
Yes. They know that most humans typically have poor impulse control, and are easily pulled off task and will fall into an addicting and lucrative loop. Makes perfect sense to show random unrelated shit.
sockaddr··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
I think the poster you're responding to is correct. I've seen it many times myself. And just so you know, asking for a piece of data and not getting it is not going to be proof that you're right.
sockaddr··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
Statements like those are meant for you to just bounce off of them and fuck off. They don't care about the truth and they know you don't care enough to do anything about their lying. It's an entire business model.

I used to do the same thing. I'd scan for problems on the test amenable to computational approaches and either pull up one of my custom made programs or write one on the spot and let it churn in the background for a bit while I worked on other stuff without the calculator.

I feel like this quote needs a qualification. You can still fear what someone might say without fearing they are correct.
sockaddr··on Scientists just found a protein that reverses brain aging in mice
If we count a permanently inflamed organic blob in roughly the shape of a mouse covered by surgical scars constantly pumped with anti-rejection drugs and hooked up to a blood filter we could probably make the mouse immortal now. It might not enjoy living though.
sockaddr··on The 10 Percent Is in a Fit of Rage over Airport Lounges
> or have social media and credit card companies convinced non-elites that they should spring for ad-hoc entry into a lounge with money they don’t have?

This is something I've detected too. If I can naturally and appropriately afford a bit of luxury that offers value I don't mind, but if I'm reaching for no reason other than to feel "better" than my current status allows because other people are doing it too I shy away from that. It's just a ploy to take money from me.

> It’s not much different than people paying for 20 minutes on fake jet to make videos for instagram or TikTok

Ehh, this is more of a business expense for them I think.

sockaddr··on Electric cars produce less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
I'm sorry but I've got two EVs and I'm not seeing anything like what you're reporting. On my first set of tires for a model S I got 60k miles which is longer than I usually like to run tires but they were still in good shape. My driving pattern is about 80% grandpa-mode and 20% speeding to loud music.

I assure you. If your EV tires are only lasting 10K miles you have one of the following cases:

- You are driving VERY aggressively

- Your car has an alignment issue or some sort of torque vectoring problem

- Your tires are absolute shit

This stuff literally works.

I know someone personally that while at a kid's soccer game said to me:

"Hey did you see that new engine Elon made? It runs on water and he's going to be putting it in all of his cars! He's also trying to mine H3 from the moon!"

Because I'm friends with this person and I like them I try to play dumb as to not be insulting and ask them to pull it up and show me. Once he does I say "oh that looks like it's AI generated" and he sort of agrees.

I don't think this person has a low IQ or anything, but I do consider them sort of ignorant (but not typical racist Trump supporter ignorant), just low-information.

We need to try to politely call this stuff out when our friends and family are being tricked because it is doing them (and us) real harm.

I have a hard time understanding this.

I can agree that things in macOS/iOS settings may be broken or unintuitive or whatever (I have no examples but I'll believe you).

But a shitshow? No. Window's Control Panel is a shitshow.

What I'd like to know from you is, if macOS/iOS settings isn't the closest thing to perfect, what is? My Gnome settings control panel on my main desktop is a certified shitshow. But macOS/iOS? Nah
