snowAbstraction··on The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2025
Maybe I will try Mokyr. I saw his "A Culture of Growth" is available as an audio book. What do you think about that book? Thanks
snowAbstraction··on The Burnout Machine
Why do you think that Sweden has almost no start up scene?

According to this crunchbase data [1] it has a lot per capita.

snowAbstraction··on Nvidia Open-Sources CuOpt
Nice that this will be open sourced. Maybe the true performance characteristics can be better understood.

The press release seems exaggerated or written by marketing, e.g. claiming "accelerating optimization exponentially". Shouldn't the acceleration be in the order of the number of compute cores?

snowAbstraction··on Includeable minimal operating system for C++
This 2016 podcast discusses this in depth: https://cppcast.com/alfred-bratterud/
snowAbstraction··on New textbook teaches students about matrix methods and their real world apps
I could only find a (legal) pdf[1] for $80. Pretty steep price when I'd probably only want to read 2-3 chapters.

snowAbstraction··on Show HN: Rust Web Framework
Thanks for sharing that. AS400 always catches my eye after doing in internship at IBM, working with AS400 back in 2000.
snowAbstraction··on Low Cost Mini PCs
Two months in and I'm a happy Beelink customer too. My kids mostly use it for Minecraft.
snowAbstraction··on Faer-rs: Linear algebra foundation for Rust
For the larger performance diffs, has anyone looked into why? Are there a couple of common reasons? I'd really like to know. Thanks
snowAbstraction··on Subroutine calls in the ancient world, before computers had stacks or heaps
Interesting. For other readers, this is about an early 80s Texas Instruments computer and not a graphing calculator as I first thought.
snowAbstraction··on Mojo is now available on Mac
I skimmed your post and I wonder if mojo is focusing on such small 512x512 matrices? What is your thinking on generalizing your results for larger matrices?
snowAbstraction··on Bike Lane Sweepers (2021)
That would be cool.

Otherwise, sweepers will need both extra robust tires and to be ready change flats.

snowAbstraction··on Unihiker, an $80 single-board PC with 2.8“ touchscreen, quad-core ARM Cortex-A35
Some boards have decent support. I've got an odroid C1 released in 2015 and I saw there is at least an Ubuntu 20 image for it!
snowAbstraction··on CGAL: Computational Geometry Algorithms Library
I've seen that there are Python wrappers for some of CGAL https://github.com/sciencectn/cgal-bindings but I haven't used them.
snowAbstraction··on Inside an IBM AS/400 eSeries Factory [video]
Thanks, this brought back some memories. I did an internship / co-op in software engineering at that site in Rochester while a student. They needed extra help so I worked a few evenings at 1.5 pay alongside the regular factory workers.
snowAbstraction··on We're moving to a four-day work week at Beacon
In Sweden, a significant number of parents with young children who work 80% so maybe that has caused the confusion.
snowAbstraction··on Homes in 97% of U.S. cities are overvalued, Moody's says
Basically.
snowAbstraction··on Ask HN: Do you use an optimization solver? Which one? Do you like it?
You can use it for Vehicle Route Problems. I did so once as an interview project but never in production. If you start from some example problem, the learning curve isn't so steep.

snowAbstraction··on Ask HN: Do you use an optimization solver? Which one? Do you like it?
Thanks! I didn't know that the benchmarking had resumed. Good news. I hope CPLEX and Xpress return someday.
snowAbstraction··on Scientists find an effective solution for the three-body problem
The photo of Professor Hagai Perets (Left) and Ph.D. student Yonadav Barry Ginat seems to have them in their native environment: the university's Science and Math library. If you zoom you'll see the Math and Science topics listed on the card for the book shelves behind them.
snowAbstraction··on Google Coral Dev Board mini SBC is now available for $100
Aren't there better odroid options if you mainly care about compute?
snowAbstraction··on Colleges at the breaking point, forcing ‘hard choices’ about education
It depends on the country and sometimes the institution and program. Here is a price list from a Swedish university with the approx. USD amounts being between $10,000 to $30,000 depending on the program:

snowAbstraction··on Sweden to shut bars and restaurants that ignore coronavirus restrictions
I don't know what your new sources are. The rates of death and infection vary a lot between regions in Sweden so any significant herd immunity is probably regional.
snowAbstraction··on Sweden to shut bars and restaurants that ignore coronavirus restrictions
There might be something to that element of (bad) luck: a large number of people in the Stockholm region seemingly timed their ski trips to Italy at just the wrong time: plenty of infectious people but before social distancing / quarantine measures.
snowAbstraction··on Best Python IDEs and Code Editors
The reviews for vim and emacs miss that you can use the LSP (Language Server Protocol) to get some (or a lot) the code navigation and refactoring support you'd find in VSCode or PyCharm.
snowAbstraction··on Visa, Plaid, networks, and jobs
There is the Swedish company Tink in this space too.

snowAbstraction··on Uniqlo robots pick up packaged T-shirts and put them in a box
I agree with you. I don't like unnecessary packaging. However, I am pretty sure the environmental impact of a plastic bag properly recycled or even incinerated is small compared to all the impacts of the individual item. I am thinking of things like the greenhouse gas emission of cotton crop. Maybe someone with a background in LCA knows the details [1].

snowAbstraction··on Ask HN: Do you know any good audio books for developers?
I've listen to some of these https://www.manning.com/liveaudio-landing and there are some glitches like some code snippets not being read. The books were not designed for audio so sometimes it is try but you can learn something.

Some of these (maybe all?) are available on audible as well.

snowAbstraction··on Making the Tokio scheduler 10x faster
Yes loom seems very important. I would interested to know how it compares with similar tools like nidhugg[1][2] for the C and C++.

snowAbstraction··on SIMD Made Easy with Intel Implicit SPMD Program Compiler
I guess this is the link https://ispc.godbolt.org/ ?
snowAbstraction··on Which companies are using Erlang, and why?
Exactly. I worked at a few smaller but established FinTech companies delivery Trading Systems to banks, hedge funds, etc that had built their own unique systems written in C++ for concurrent applications. These systems were battle tested but they were not open-sourced and anyway they could not easily be re-purposed.
