snaky··on The privacy trade-offs of cheap Android smartphones
It's not easy to check whether a phone has malware. It's easy to check whether a phone supported by LineageOS. Just like home routers and OpenWRT.

What I've learned from the comments above is k8s consulting business is the best thing since OOP. Just tell the marketing team you have a magic button that being installed will give them ability to change the course of business every 5 minutes by handwaving and a PowerPoint slide.

> someone else does it, maybe better, open sources it, community forms around it, you're toast

Oracle is very much okay still with superior technology, despite open source, and community, if we are talking about PostgreSQL.

snaky··on China squandered its chance to build a home-grown semiconductor industry
The problem with monopsony is not any particular chip or technology. You can make (with huge investment and a couple of decades) or buy any technology. The problem is that you have to make the whole Digikey catalogue (and then some) all by yourself. From capacitors - all of them - types, capacities, sizes, form-factors, voltages, grades, to ADCs (no, buying Analog Devices wouldn't solve this, and you couldn't buy it anyway) and RF components, and everything in between. All of them, to stay competitive in what you can build with that components. That's where Soviet Union lost the game, and any modern country, including the United States would loose too, considering how the field has expanded since 1991.

> If a journalist uses a technical term in a headline, and then goes on to explain what the term means in the article, how is that not fine?

If a marketing team uses a financial term in a commercial with an asterisk, and then goes on to explain what the term with an asterisk means in the actual 117 pages long financial contract this commercial is trying to sell, how is that not fine?

snaky··on Is Perl 6 Being Renamed?
The more practical question would be not how fast it is (supposing it's quite fast), but how many features isn't there yet.
snaky··on Linux kernel drivers in Rust might become an option in the future
Security was never high in priority list of Linux kernel development actually.
snaky··on Linux kernel drivers in Rust might become an option in the future
Actually OS kernels and Linux kernel in particular have many not obvious requirements. Consider easy disassembly for example.

> The code generation part ends up being nice when something goes wrong. When somebody sends in an oops, I often end up having to look at the disassembly (and no, a fancy debugger wouldn't help - I'm talking about the disassembly of the "code" portion of the oops itself, and matching it up with the source tree - the oops doesn't come with the whole binary), and then having code generation match the source makes things a _lot_ easier.

> CarPlay as a requirement

Why don't you loose your requirement to just 2DIN space to install your favourite Car Play compatible gadget into?

snaky··on Thoughts on Rust bloat
A large app in C++ with ATL (Active Template Library) or WTL (Windows Template Library) would have about the same size and speed as in C with plain Win32 API, leveraging the whole new level of abstractions, code reuse and developer productivity. The point is such things are possible, bloat is not inevitable.

snaky··on Open letter from an Android developer to the Google Play team
This is extremely shortsighted.

Globally, iOS is in decline, and Android is on the rise, and there's nothing that could change the tendency. The main driver for mobile growth is 3rd world, where Android is a king.

> Apple continues to face challenges in terms of unit shipments—a trend that is unlikely to be fixed soon. Apple shipped 35.3 million iPhones in the second quarter, down 14.6 percent from 41.3 million units one year ago.

It seems iPhones ain't very popular in India.

> Xiaomi has now been India’s top smartphone seller for eight straight quarters. The Chinese electronics giant shipped 10.4 million handsets in the quarter that ended in June, commanding 28.3% of the market, research firm IDC reported Tuesday. Its closest rival, Samsung — which once held the top spot in India — shipped 9.3 million handsets in the nation during the same period, settling for a 25.3% market share.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, released 2016, MTK-based cheap smartphone, current official stable ROM is V10.2.2.0.MBFCNXM released May 2019.

> Apple shipped 33.8 million new iPhones during 2Q19, which was down significantly from the same quarter one year ago. Regardless of the slightly lower market share and device selling prices, the iPhone installed base continued to grow. The numbers show that now 3rd placed Apple may soon drop into 4th, with Xiaomi only 1.5 million handsets behind Apple.
