This feels like the same type of critique people have about code-assistant LLMs. We need to be a lot more realistic about their role as a 'next-gen autocomplete' who can write some boilerplate code, not a replacement for a mid-level software developer.

These apps seem useful to reduce the friction of entering your meal's calorie contents from 30 seconds of ingredient estimating, to 20 seconds (auto-filling main ingredients and a baseline portion estimate). As everyone points out, it's impossible for these to get any better than that (GIGO). But reducing the overhead for calorie-counting seems like a reasonable goal and a valuable service. Of course the marketing departments for these companies is going to say whatever bullshit they want; that's their prerogative...

But also when the establishment is correct, it still gets (incorrectly) exposed by independent sources.

There's a nontrivial part of today's population that is purely edgy and contrarian as a rule, without a solid rational foundation to their worldview.

Maybe this is an uncommon view on HN, but personally I engage in the arts to scratch that itch of creative expression and emotional release, not with the goal to eventually monetize it. Even without AI, my poetry would never realistically be "good enough" to make it into a career, but that doesn't make it any less fulfilling for me.

Maybe I'm just being shortsighted, but I don't see that as a good comparison to this, since we read books for a deep exploration of an idea by the author, not just for the idea. It's not about the rareness, or physical quality of the binding. See e-books, even.

The reality is that the LLM is not adding better analysis, it's just padding the length and fluffing. If the author was going to pad with LLM garble, he might as well have made a blog post and saved everyone the time. Of course that's less profitable...

Regardless of opinions surrounding Jan 6, I find it re-assuring that even with full face captured on photo, and the fact that many have a smartphone with them, the FBI is incapable of finding several of them after 2.5 years. I thought the surveillance state was more mature than that.

In the isolated case, sure, but the point is that in the long-run it's more useful to maintain a non-partisan reputation, otherwise it becomes as useless as fact-checkers are. Bad community notes corrodes public trust in them.

The goal is that the Notes themselves are not controversial. You can have a non-controversial Community Note attached to a controversial tweet.

I don't think it's died off, rather it's found in more independent blogs/newsletters at this point. On one hand, the information is generally free and more accessible to a wider global audience, but maybe that exposure is biased towards scientists that are themselves strong writers. Whereas in a world where high-quality science writers are funded, the researcher doesn't have to master this skill to have their work effectively popularized.

I'm not sure how culturally-specific this is, but as a foreigner living in France, I notice the majority of smokers I meet are those who smoke exclusively while drinking. So to that extent, they appear to have sufficient will-power to resist most of the time, but the lowered inhibitions and the mental association between alcohol and smoke I guess are overwhelming.

I wonder what the tangible negative effects are of smoking 4-5 cigarettes a week like this compared to 4-5 a day? I also wonder to what extent this is a French phenomenon.

I currently have my old account linked to my parent's address, and I'm worried it would be a huge headache to try and open a new account from abroad without a proper address. I would assume there is quite a lot of evidence for the efficacy of helmets in the event of a crash, no? I think in general it makes more sense to give credence to studies that give intuitive results that are explainable by sound first principles modeling, rather than one study that gives an unintuitive result based on human behavior.

They are probably referring to some kind of large-scale environmental contamination, but as far as I'm aware it's quite difficult to make any of these theories fit with the timeline of international historical trends. Typically the differences in rates and magnitudes are apparent across borders and thus would more easily be explained with cultural factors rather than an environmental contaminant that is (largely) agnostic to cultural effects.

Though for me, the killer feature in Obsidian is the seamless LateX support within a markdown file. I see nb has support for .tex files, but I only want to write LateX when it's absolutely necessary for math notation, not the whole file.

I doubt the charging port is the most important factor in choosing a phone for most people.

Similar to how I voted for Biden even though I don't agree with 100% of his policies. It doesn't mean I don't disagree with him often - it's just that I only get one vote, so I have to prioritize. It's perfectly consistent for me to complain and make my opinion known when his administration does things I disagree with.
