Joscha Bach is great. He has many other talks available on his website. [0]

His Twitter [1] is also a fun and interesting place, check it out.

Stewart Brand recently hosted Chris D. Thomas to talk at the Long Now Seminar about anthropocene speciation [0].

The premise is that current wild species are under severe duress due to changing environments, however nature is thriving in the age of extinction.

snailletters··on Reasoning, and What It Is To Be Rational (2000)
A few years ago I attempted to make the writings of Richard Garlikov a little more approachable, as his website is very basic. I never finished it as the process of converting each article into HTML was very tedious.

I've uploaded an example to Imgur [0] and I’d be happy to share all resources if anyone is interested.

snailletters··on Naming things (2015) [pdf]
Including the year and month on a project file means it can stand independent of it's directory for easy distinction in search, meaning you can find relevant files in a way that is uncomplicated and easy to understand.

[Edit] As dkarl mentioned more elegantly: this system helps map a project in time.

YYMM on project files is shorter and less ambiguous than using a project name for the same function.

I'd imagine the sub-directory underscore is also used to aid searching. You can easily visually identify (or filter) sub-directories.

> The initial underscore helps by (a) keeping those directories sorted [separately] and (b) providing a visual clue that they are 'special'. [0]

snailletters··on IKEA dives into world of Artificial Intelligence
I really enjoyed the video presentation in the Do you speak Human? survey [1]. However I was expecting the survey to not present the information as black and white, yes and no. For many of the questions, I wanted something that was in-between. I'm worried that the available choices will affect the results.

It's a little worrying that people think an AI should "reflect your values and worldview." Maybe a more appropriate approach to modeling artificial intelligence would be how they are described in Iain M. Banks' the Culture series. [2]

> Although drones are artificial, the parameters that prescribe their minds are not rigidly constrained, and sentient drones are full individuals, with their own personalities, opinions and quirks.

snailletters··on Japanese Education: Amae, Stress, and Perseverence
To be critical is to be thinking, but I read this article more as a concept and take the emotional responses that it seems to elicit as a stronger guage of the idea than its factual evidence.
snailletters··on Forget coding, we need to teach our kids how to dream
This stance seems almost ironic, given your alias. I assume your name is based in this attitude though.

> at the expense of human lives.

I think you mean to imply that children will become mindless coding machines, but would you not agree that coding can help to expand your view of the world, just as learning a language or beginning to paint?

As the article implies:

> Each and every one of us is born curious and creative,

everyone has the ability to form connections in their mind. Is coding as a facilitator to our curiosity? Maybe it is only a matter of nurturing a coding experience that complements that curiosity.

snailletters··on Where will UX Design be in 5 years?
Snapchat's Spectacles [1] offers an amazing example of user experience design as Norman describes it:

“Today that term [user experience] has been horribly misused. It’s been used by people who say, ‘I’m a user experience designer, I design websites,’ or, ‘I design apps,’ and they have no clue what they’re doing, and they think the ‘experience’ is that simple device – the website or the app or who knows what – no, it’s everything – it’s the way you experience the world, it’s the way you experience your life, it’s the way you experience a service, or, yeah, an app, or a computer system, but it’s a system that’s everything. Got it?”

snailletters··on To keep Tor hack source code secret, DOJ dismisses child porn case
From the Wikipedia article, "Community, Space and Online Censorship (2009) argued that classifying children in an infantile manner, as innocents in need of protection, is a form of obsession over the concept of purity."

I believe I see what you mean, however in a case of child pornography do you not think that it's in a human's best interest to keep something from abuse of naivety?

snailletters··on Ask HN: How to learn new things better?
I am currently learning Japanese, I started only a month or so ago. I have found two amazing resources (made by the same people,) that I'm sure will be of a great help to get you started with Japanese. They have a text book called TextFugu, that not only teaches you Japanese, but they walk you through the hard parts of getting started and essentially teach you to motivate yourself to learn. They also have a spaced repetition online program (similar to Anki,) called WaniKani that helps you learn Kanji.

I was introduced[1] to Lojban[2] by a friend through my shallow interest in programming. I don't know much about it, but maybe it comes close to providing an answer to your 'new language' question. Their website[3] provides links to learn about it's architecture.
