sn0wf1re··on Primitive Technology: Iron Bacteria Cement [video]
As someone who has fought wildfire before, I personally found that sweat does not accumulate in front of a source of heat. You start to feel damp or wet after you walk away from the heat. Perhaps it is the same with a hot furnace.
sn0wf1re··on 90% of Kidnappings in São Paulo result from dates on Tinder and similar apps
Wouldn't that just lead to a false sense of security? Surely the background check would not be 100% at preventing bad actors.
sn0wf1re··on 90% of Kidnappings in São Paulo result from dates on Tinder and similar apps
The response is how to take basic steps to protect one's self. Steps that are already common among women. Basic safety steps are not victim blaming, for example, wearing bright clothing at night to reduce the chance of being injured by motor vehicle.

It seems you are implying that the comment is victim blaming, or if I take your statement less charitably it is flame bait implying that the comment above would cause outrage if the genders were swapped.

sn0wf1re··on First UK child to receive gene therapy for fatal genetic disorder is now healthy
What sort of regulation? Make it cheaper by x% per year or we stop using it? Doesn't sound that dissimilar to "make it cheaper than the total cost of the current treatment or we won't use it".
sn0wf1re··on What if mass storage were free? (1980)

sn0wf1re··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
I take the opinion of the sibling comment. These short form videos are heroin. And as a service provider YouTube needs to offer the number one in-demand product if they want to maintain clientele, even at the cost of their "core" product (medium to long form video).
sn0wf1re··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
It reminds me of the Tiktok vs Youtube comparison. Ad revenue was way higher on long format content, but the success of Tiktok means that Youtube now has to pay more to creators, even if their margins are lower. AI as search is lower margin but Google will need to implement it just to stay relevant.

For athletes its bad form that will limit your ability to reach the top levels of your domain. We then test for the top levels of these domains, like the Olympics or Tour de France. We don't test VO₂ max since it is boring. In education we don't test understanding because it is hard to write those tests in many domains.
sn0wf1re··on Backblaze Drive Stats for 2022
> 50TB at 200MB/s is about 72h.

Assuming the device is offline for users during that time, otherwise there may be reduced throughput.

sn0wf1re··on Backblaze Drive Stats for 2022
I've noticed that media files seem to look "good enough" at 720p for cartoons and 1080p for live action. I know some people obsess over the highest quality of everything (4k 10bit HDR) but even those came out in 2016[1] and aren't that popular. Higher definition like 8k is basically non existent, it can't run on old HDMI cables and needs both a beefy decoder (Blasting heat) and a powerful display driver as well.

A simple solution is to not dip the sidewalks. Just have a larger bump for cars.
sn0wf1re··on NSA CSI IPv6 Security Guidance (2023) [pdf]
My thinking was that it would be a single point of ipv4 traffic, rather than having to maintain all the components for dual stack. But thinking about it more, 6to4 probably increases the complexity of firewalls.
sn0wf1re··on NSA CSI IPv6 Security Guidance (2023) [pdf]
They do feel a bit old. Especially considering that is not the "TL;DR" of the paper. The paper makes no statement on whether or not it is a good idea to use ipv6, only that the US Government is transitioning and some guidelines on how to do that.
sn0wf1re··on NSA CSI IPv6 Security Guidance (2023) [pdf]
Interesting that they prefer dual stack to tunnel. I would have thought running your own 6to4 at the network edge would have been more preferential.

> If you know "this thing is broken", the commit log is a fantastic resource to figure out what changed which may have broke it

git supports both diff and log for specific directories, although this may not help you if the issue was with a dependency in another folder that was updated.

sn0wf1re··on Toyota CEO Says “Silent Majority” of Auto Industry Is Doubting EV-Only Future
I've never understood the infrastructure argument for Hydrogen vs Battery. Electricity is ubiquitous in many places in the world and can be made in situ. One can argue that there will need to be a lot of infrastructure upgrades for the power demand, but that is needed for the slightly less efficient hydrogen electrolysis as well. I see developing countries continue to do what they have already been doing; using smaller, more efficient vehicles including bikes (both motorized and non), and shared transport methods.
sn0wf1re··on Zstandard – Fast real-time compression algorithm
I feel that is a valid argument for server-side resources not supporting it, but browsers are already hundreds of MB (if not multiple GB) in size.

> Not wanting to bother someone else is silly, since it results in bothering way more than one person

I agree with you.

> Most could ask friend or family for help

Most but not all. An alternative is asking a stranger (government programs where I am ended almost a year ago), strangers are kinder than people realize. But asking for help is challenging for many people.

Can you provide a reference to a discount grocer (since you are replying to a comment about affordability) that offers curb-side or delivery without fee? I am not aware of any.
sn0wf1re··on Graph showing level of Covid, flu and RSV in US wastewater systems, by city
COVID symptoms (coughing in particular, which is a big spreader of particles) can last weeks. I don't know many people with multiple weeks worth of food in their fridge unless they have a deepfreeze (large chest freezer).
sn0wf1re··on Graph showing level of Covid, flu and RSV in US wastewater systems, by city
How else would they get food? Not everyone can afford to order in. Is your opinion that these people should just starve?

sn0wf1re··on How to estimate an SSD’s working life
> Properly functioning batteries that are undersized are a battery life problem. A malfunctioning battery that cannot deliver enough current for the CPU at full power is a different problem.

These are the same problem. Nominal voltage lowers as batteries age, as does the ability to maintain a voltage under load. The batteries were "fine" for the first year. A larger battery would have been able to keep voltage under load at an acceptable level even as it aged.

> I expect the battery on the 13 to be bigger because I assume (with no research, admittedly) that the SOC and screen both take a good bit more power than the equivalents on a 6S.

And yet the 6 had a larger battery (same screen size). Personally I find the 6S (and 6) to be very thin. They could have easily been a couple mm larger without the consumer noticing (Apple could have made the camera lens flush!).

sn0wf1re··on Apple launches Self Service Repair in Europe
No one.

But no one could fix a capacitor or resistor for less than it would cost to manufacture a new one. "fix a capacitor" even seems silly to say, because it is beyond the scope of the average person to fix. A similar analogy is a car engine, you can repair the engine, however mostly what a mechanic does is swap out pieces. Some things can be fixed with a welder, most (spark plugs, gaskets, belts, even parts like a carburetor) are just replaced. This is similar for "technology" items. The parts may not be fixable but sub-components should be replaceable; the overall product should be repairable.

sn0wf1re··on How to estimate an SSD’s working life
The obsession with thinner phones and undersized batteries to allow that was the real issue, in my opinion. Looking at a comparison list[1] the 6s has about half the battery capacity of the iPhone 13, and is the smallest battery of the entire iPhone lineup for its screen / face size.

The Apple TV is a multi-user device with extremely poor multi-user support. Considering how long it has been used by B&Bs it amazes me that Apple has never allowed guest access.

Music App sometimes breaks. It just doesn't play certain sections of some songs, even on replay, closing the app doesn't help; a device reboot is required to play songs in their entirety. And this happens on both devices that are connected via hardwire as well as wifi/LTE.

Considering Apple's revenue it is ridiculous how long bugs persist in their applications.

sn0wf1re··on Shenzhou-15 manned mission ready for launch after final rehearsal
Sure if you say 1% is a significant amount*. The percentage in China is likely in the double digits if you count the people who have been under "house arrest" for the past couple months (or longer).

* It should be lower, the USA should do better. Comparing it to the current situation in China is disingenuous.
