smusamashah··on Journey to JPEG XL: open-source experiments shaped the future of image coding
> I should not be known and my picture should not be on the blog post

That is the opposite of what parent comment says. It took offence on a generated photo of you. It would have been better to not have anything than a generated image.

smusamashah··on Programmers will document for Claude, but not for each other
I think it was Joel Spolsky's book "User Interface Design for Programmers" where one of his strong points was that nobody reads manuals. Documentation isn't any different.

And on the article's point (the title at least), I write stuff for LLM more freely because they will not care if what I have written is complete garbage. I can't do that in the documents I write for fellow humans. They will be read by them and carry more weight, and therefore require much more effort to write. With LLM, all I care about is providing enough context.

May be we just need to ingrain some of that thought process in our for-humans docs.

smusamashah··on Ten Basic Clouds
Cumulus are the best clouds. They make so many shapes and things. I could see them as space ships floating by or big heads, or dragons and what not as a child.
smusamashah··on Show HN: Hallucinate – Massively Multiplayer Online Rave
I got a little motion sick with this camera control. I won't be visiting this site again but for other people like me, please add a crosshair. They help with motion sickness by giving you something to stick your gaze on.
smusamashah··on A few interesting modern pixel fonts
This reminded of Wingdings font that I use to play around with in Windows 98
smusamashah··on Using AI to write better code more slowly
Title of this article suggested more depth and I was expecting actual code examples. But it is like other opinion pieces. It suggests a prompt (ask AI to find bugs) that works for the author advising everyone to do it that way.

I use these tools at both work and for personal side projects and I was expecting to watch and learn. But these opinion pieces without examples are way too many now.

smusamashah··on Growing Neural Cellular Automata
This has been shared a few times here. It looks cool but I don't understand the usefulness of this tech. This is likely a demo to show some capability, what that is though I don't understand.
smusamashah··on Project Glasswing: what Mythos showed us
'Its not X, its Y' is also a common LLM trope.
smusamashah··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
Not op, made a tool to convert Microsoft OneNote notes to Obsidian canvas and Markdown. First it used a python lib which was too limiting. Then it used windows API to plug into OneNote and read the doc in its original XML form. That made the conversion correct and fully featured.
smusamashah··on Ontario auditors find doctors' AI note takers routinely blow basic facts
Your analogy reminds of messed up fingers and hands in image generation models just a year ago. Now that is pretty much solved. These days they are generating videos you can't tell apart from reality. This makes me believe these nuances will keep reducing and eventually become very hard to notice and find in may be every task.
smusamashah··on Codex is now available on mobile via ChatGPT app
I dont have Claude Code installed anywhere but I use there web/cloud version of Code via there mobile app. It's awesome to give code a task for a github repo while on the go. ChatGPT should introduce something similar too.
smusamashah··on Preserving Fisher-Price Pixter
Just play around and learn perhaps. My kid like drawing on his LCD drawing tablet. This is more fun than that. It's like Paint Delux but in physical form. And it has games too.

I think I am going to buy a Pixter itself. Everything else today is either too limited (vtech is buttons only and its screens are too tiny for example) or too powerful.

smusamashah··on Preserving Fisher-Price Pixter
Is there any dumb LCD console like that available these days for kids? (not those retro gaming consoles). I want to buy one for my kids. It looks so good, specially because it is a dumb and simple device.

I found Pixter online but are there a little bit more capable systems like this for kids made today?

EDIT: Looks like devices by LeapFrog and VTech are the closest alternative these days so far.

smusamashah··on New stainless steel can survive conditions for hydrogen production in seawater
> That is what makes the finding so striking. Manganese is usually not viewed as a friend of stainless steel corrosion resistance. In fact, the prevailing view has been that manganese weakens it.

> "Initially, we did not believe it because the prevailing view is that Mn impairs the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Mn-based passivation is a counter-intuitive discovery, which cannot be explained by current knowledge in corrosion science. However, when numerous atomic-level results were presented, we were convinced. Beyond being surprised, we cannot wait to exploit the mechanism," said Dr. Kaiping Yu, the first author of the article, whose PhD is supervised by Professor Huang.

This is the Cannot be explained bit

smusamashah··on Mythos Finds a Curl Vulnerability
He also said this [1] a few weeks ago about AI PRs.

> Over the last few months, we have stopped getting AI slop security reports in the #curl project. They're gone.

> Instead we get an ever-increasing amount of really good security reports, almost all done with the help of AI.

> They're submitted in a never-before seen frequency and put us under serious load.

> I hear similar witness reports from fellow maintainers in many other Open Source projects.

> Lots of these good reports are deemed "just bugs" and things we deem not having security properties.

smusamashah··on What British people mean when they say 'sorry'
Now I want to know if "Thank You" also carries as many meanings. I came here from Pakistan for work 6 years ago. Article is about sorry the Thank you was a bigger cultural shock perhaps. Number of Thanks I got in first few months already surpassed all thankses I ever heard in Pakistan. This does not mean we are thankless but you won't get a Thanks for moving aside a step on a footpath, or holding a door if you ever did.

smusamashah··on New research suggests people can communicate and practice skills while dreaming
I have made poetry in some dreams which feels very profound and very rhyming (I have zero poeticness or interest in poetry) but I also remember that a few times when I did wake up with those words still in my head, it was a mish mash of words.

smusamashah··on Spam in conversational replies to blog posts
About 20 years ago when I was in university, I was looking for anything to do part time and posting links on random blogs in replies was one of the jobs that could get you some money. The job came with excel sheets containing where to post those links and what to post. I was more interested in automating this process. There was a captcha involved in this process to somewhere. We didn't see it as spamming. It was 'ad posting' job or something.

Don't remember a lot. Just reminded me of my time doing this. I don't remember actually posting much links myself because it was too boring and lots of manual work for not much benefit.
