smpetrey··on Snapchat’s New Update Triggers Revolt by Millions of Teens
It's too bad they didn't roll out the UI as a feature. Allowing users to opt-in or opt-out. That way users could tinker with it and not lose their streaks, and learn the new UI before the _real_ rollout.

The mismanagement of Snap is so absurd. This company is going to end in a fiery scorched earth death.

I wonder if this will be used for Google NYC HQ, or is Google attempting to get into the co-working game?

smpetrey··on A 12pt Font Should Be the Same Size Everywhere (2012)
A point is a terrible unit for displays. No point in attempting a solution when ‘px’ is a viable solution already. Use ‘px’ where you can and then use ‘pt’ for your print styles.

smpetrey··on WhatTheFont – Shazam for Fonts
Not the most effective tool, but it's the only on we got. I wish WhatTheFont got a neural network update.

This Twitter pitch deck looks suspiciously “off-brand Twitter.”

Why not release the PDF of the deck?

smpetrey··on Thank You GitHub
If it wasn't for Github, I wouldn't be where I am today. For that, I'm pretty thankful. Sure Github has its flaws, and the product is still evolving. But all-in-all, it's been a transformative ride. Thank you, to everyone at Github. I owe you so much. :)

smpetrey··on New York’s Subways Are Not Just Delayed, Some Trains Don’t Run at All
Yep. In fact they're ridden so infrequently at night, they have a request-a-stop program after late-night hours:

smpetrey··on Apple to discontinue iPod Nano and Shuffle
A couple of great products have now come to pass.

That said, the Nano and Shuffle no longer belong in the Apple ecosystem. An Apple Watch and a pair of AirPods replace them. Both totaling $428 USD minimum.

It's no wonder they discontinued the shuffle and nano. They're have a larger margin, and can boost sales of the apple watch in one fell swoop. Kind of a bummer but an interesting move.

smpetrey··on Amazon Hub
As a person who regularly commutes from Brooklyn to Manhattan for work I'm never home to accept my Amazon deliveries. To make matters worse, the local UPS, FedEx and USPS offices always "lose" my package only to have either never show up or it is re-delivered weeks later with no notification.

Why don't they just leave it in vestibule or on my doorstep? Thieves. All delivery carriers just plain refuse to leave packages unattended.

This solution is basically an Amazon locker or PO Box that lives in my lobby? Sounds awesome. Amazon Hub might not make sense in rural areas but Amazon's biggest target lives in urban areas. I'm so ready for this.

smpetrey··on The future of fake news: don't believe everything you read, see or hear
The future of fake news aside... this will become an awesome tool in the film industry.

On set Directors and DP alike will no longer have to do worry about talent doing multiple takes if manipulation like this can happen in post.

smpetrey··on Snap falls to IPO price
For your consideration, not a single share purchased is a voting share. SNAP’s shares should be closer to $13.

smpetrey··on Populism and the Economics of Globalization [pdf]
Trump (err well, The Whitehouse and his staff) don't have a policy on trade deals at the moment officially.

But the GOP do. Some notables include:

"International trade is crucial for our economy." [1]

"Negotiate reductions in tariffs on U.S. industrial goods and the elimination of other trade barriers so that our autos, heavy machinery, textiles, and other products will no longer be shut out of foreign markets." [2]

"Advance a Free Trade Area of the Americas to take advantage of burgeoning new markets at our doorstep." [3]

Interesting to see how GOP ideals are forced to evolve at the helm of a madman president because the quoted text above around a decade old.

smpetrey··on Connect: behind the front-end experience
Fucking stupendous. Stripe is continually pushing the envelope. Outstanding work.
smpetrey··on Time Warner will spend $100M on Snapchat original shows and ads
Yes. I think that is exactly what moolcool is saying. And he's right. Instagram's (typical users) daily active users just surpassed 700 Million. And the Stories daily active users just surpassed 375 Million [1]. Now Facebook has a juggernaut of ad targeting for very specific audiences.

Now if you TW, where would you rather spend your $100 Million on original content and shows? A fully-sustained cruise liner ($FB) or a rapidly sinking dingy ($SNAP)?

Sidenote: if any shareholders since the IPO are reading this, sell now. Not only are your shares non-voteable [2], but they are as ephemeral as Snap's users. Get out while you can.
