smokey_the_bear··on Airbnb Plans to File Confidentially for IPO in August
I did only deactivate my account. I followed up on Twitter, and on a support thread and requested my account be fully deleted, and they didn't get back to me on either request.
smokey_the_bear··on Airbnb Plans to File Confidentially for IPO in August
I stayed in an AirBnB in Houston in the summer with broken AC. I left before the first night and was not refunded a cent.

My review is buried on the page. It wasn't on top when I wrote it, and the stars weren't displayed, just the text.

I deleted my AirBnB account.

smokey_the_bear··on Netflix urged by EU to slow streaming to save internet
I've been impressed that Zoom isn't breaking down. I'm on it all day, and even my kids now have TaeKwonDo three days a week over Zoom.
smokey_the_bear··on Why Do Such Ancient People Run America?
And that's great. Voting is important to me too, and it was when I was younger also. It happened that specific year that requesting an absentee ballot was not a high enough priority and I missed it. It wasn't even a presidential election year.

I'm 37 and own a house and stuff now, and move less, and change my drivers license when I do move. It's much easier for me to vote. I don't think about it in advance.

Why is it so hard to acknowledge that while it's not "hard" for young people to vote, it is slightly harder than it is for established middle age people?

smokey_the_bear··on Why Do Such Ancient People Run America?
Yes, I didn't say it was impossible to vote. My point was that it is more inconvenient in general for young people to vote than older people, and there are things we could do to increase their participation if we wanted to. We could also hold elections on weekends.
smokey_the_bear··on Why Do Such Ancient People Run America?
A lot of voter registration laws are designed to make it hard for young people to vote. They move more frequently or are at college away from their permanent address.

I've missed one major election since I turned 18, and it's because I was on internship 5 hours from where I could vote.

They also serve a much higher ratio of rice to fish than a typical sushi restaurant
smokey_the_bear··on There are too many screens, time to go back to gauges
I’d never driven a car where the gauges bothered me, so I didn’t worry about it when buying a 2019 minivan to replace my 2006 Prius. I hate the screen. The clock isn’t always displayed! And it displays in multiple places! I just don’t use the radio because it’s too many taps to be safe while driving.
smokey_the_bear··on Fake and dangerous kids products are turning up for sale on Amazon
I like the Love to Dream swaddle, and recommended it to a friend. They said the zipper broke the first time they used it. Looks like they probably got a fake one. What a nightmare.
smokey_the_bear··on Lab chimps were dumped on Liberia's Monkey Island – their caretaker saved them

smokey_the_bear··on Luxury hotel guests keep stealing mattresses
Yes, Chicago. I doubt it has happened again, the quiz bowl organization took steps to prevent similar conflicts.
smokey_the_bear··on Luxury hotel guests keep stealing mattresses
I was once at a hotel for a high school quiz bowl tournament. There was also a (very drunk) darts competition, and a Shibari meetup (Japanese bondage + furries?).

There were some awkward elevator rides.

smokey_the_bear··on The iPhone 11 Camera, Part 1: A Completely New Camera
I also seem to have more trouble taking non-blurry pictures of my kids with my 11 pro vs my old 7. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but it's frustrating.
smokey_the_bear··on SAT Scores Fall as More Students Take the Test
I didn't do any prep for the SAT or ACT. Later I considered taking the GRE and read a prep book that had tips like above. I was astounded how much easier it made the verbal questions.

smokey_the_bear··on Thousands of New Millionaires Are About to Eat San Francisco Alive
My family moved from Berkeley to Auburn Lakes, right outside The Woodlands last month. It is different, but we see a lot of great things so far. My email is in my profile if you'd like to meet up sometime!
smokey_the_bear··on Paris Will Make Public Transportation Free for Kids
I was 17 for my first internship in sf in 2000. A monthly youth muni pass was $8. Looks like it’s 39 now.
smokey_the_bear··on Why Is College in America So Expensive?
I don't know about UC Davis, but we just went to family camp at UC Santa Barbara for a week, and the food was fantastic.
smokey_the_bear··on Bay Area cities are cracking down on free food at tech companies
I worked at Genentech in 2004. My recollection is that there are zero restaurants nearby, and that I had to park in garage and then ride a shuttle to the office due to limited parking. Not having the excellent cafeteria would have been a hassle there.
smokey_the_bear··on 11% of Americans don’t use the internet
I see this complaint about parents a lot. I interact with my kids all day. We cook dinner together, we play playdoh, I read to them endlessly. And I'll bike them to the park, and then I sit there and play with my phone while they run around.

I do not find it fun to climb on kids playgrounds. I don't enjoy helping my son across the monkey bars, and he makes more progress at it when I don't.

Parenting can be mentally and physically exhausting, and it's really not fair or at all useful to judge a parent based on a glimpse of 5 minutes of their day.

smokey_the_bear··on America is losing the battle against robocalls
There's a Do Not Disturb option on ios, that has a sub-option to still allow calls from people in your contacts list.
smokey_the_bear··on Why Women Choose Differently at Work
I'm a woman in tech. Google used to have a page somewhere where it told you what it assumed about you from your habits. It was 100% confident that I was male until I started searching for pregnancy stuff all the time.
smokey_the_bear··on Achtung Baby by Sara Zaske, Reviewed
Thank you. We took an exploratory road trip to check out Corvallis and Eugene two years ago, and we stopped in Ashland and did have a very nice time at a park there. We hadn't actually considered the town, I'd assumed it was very conservative for some reason.

I am very curious what town you live in. We are looking for a place to move with our young children.

This is true. I'm able to use my HSA account to purchase glasses from Zenni Optical though too.
smokey_the_bear··on Where Did the Fear of Poisoned Halloween Candy Come From? (2013)
There were a few houses near me that gave out something special in the late 80s. One house gave out baggies of home made popcorn, brownies at another, candy apples at one house, and one house took a polaroid of you in your costume. These were all beloved houses.

I'd love to do that for the younger kids in my neighborhood. But a lot of the slightly older kids that come to my door are awfully surly. They are trying to grab handfuls of candy from the bowl as you are trying to give them one, and they also steal anything else that happens to be on your front porch that night. I don't really want to deal with trying to give them something special.

smokey_the_bear··on Electric bikes aren't cheating, says research into health benefits
I saw an older couple riding fat bike ebikes on the Point Reyes seashore, a couple of miles down limantour beach in the wilderness. It would definitely ruin the experience if there were a couple dozen bikers screwing around on the sand dunes there. But it was nice the older couple was able to get to that part of the wilderness, there's no way my mom could ever get to that spot.
