smokey_circles··on Britain should scrap its online safety bill
[2] several citations needed.

The danger is they're not dead, they're alive and well with a large part of a voting population.

Terrible idea.

As is [1]. Let's spend money for no reason, and also it makes it harder to integrate with the outside world, where the money London needs to launder is

smokey_circles··on Neon – Serverless Postgres
> Docker is a terrible idea for a database in general

Why? Genuine question, my gut feel is there's something wrong about it too but I can't put words to it nor have I found a benchmark that convinced me, but it's worth noting I'm not sure what I'm looking for

smokey_circles··on Why We Switched from Python to Go (2021)
required is a strong, but personal opinion. go's generics are just type switches for the lazy (over simplified)
smokey_circles··on Why We Switched from Python to Go (2021)
> it really is not better than what you can do in Java or C#

Theoretically, sure. If you _really_ know your stuff.

However, you can naively pack hundreds of thousands of go routines into a single thread in a go routine after a week or two of using it.

I'm not saying go is better, I'm just saying Java copied this abstraction for a reason: doing it right is hard

smokey_circles··on Shaped Charges – Sheet of copper going through 1ft of solid steel (2010) [video]
None of that is salient.

Propaganda is an effective drag net. We're all susceptible to some form of it. Outright lying works more effectively than it should.

You're just looking for a morale high ground, no need to pretend otherwise.

smokey_circles··on Minnesota Wants to Ban Under-18s from User-Generated Content Services
Oh yeah. It's Facebook that causes kids to become depressed or attempt suicide.

Nevermind the student loan debt crisis, the floundering economy or the authoritarianism sneaking in.

Definitely social media.

Spoken like the disconnected politicians creating these laws. Hilariously off the mark.

Social media is as dangerous for kids as video games. There's an argument to be made for advertising but I sense that is far beyond the perception of the people blaming social media for the state of the democratic society they've participated in for the past few decades...

smokey_circles··on Developer creates bot to mimic stock trading by US politicians: portfolio up 25%
Oh you beat the market?

So do cats [1]

This just proves "the market" are not the experts they charge you to believe they are.

smokey_circles··on Coinbase's 10-Q update: users' crypto asset could be subject to bankruptcy claim
... obviously?

It's an asset (for some reason). That's what happens to assets when you file bankruptcy.

What do you think happens when a bank collapses? Your money is magically protected?

smokey_circles··on The Tragedy of Dogecoin
Of course, as we all know, using electricity is the real danger.

Nevermind how it's produced, it's the configuration of transistors and how they are used that does real damage to the environment.

Coal? No no no, GPUs are the real killer!

smokey_circles··on No Fixed Address Bank Account
I'm a pessimist but this probably has more to do with circumventing those pesky KYC and AML laws that HSBC keep getting fined over
smokey_circles··on Ask HN: Plant-Based Meat to Carnivores?
well my app sucks and this should have been a top level reply. My bad
smokey_circles··on Ask HN: Plant-Based Meat to Carnivores?
This is a great example of Chesterton's fence.

Predators keep population numbers low. Which prevents overgrazing, which protects the environment, which ensures herbivores can survive.

The Yellowstone park's reintroduction of wolves is a pretty good example of it.

It's really just arrogance to assume we need to or should interfere with nature, but I appreciate the good intentions and don't mean that in a negative manner.

smokey_circles··on Citizens reject proposed South Africa law linking biometrics to SIM cards
I hadn't heard of this.

Doesn't matter. RICA requires you to give a current and valid proof of address and government issued ID when buying a sim card.

Biometrics is unnecessary. Also probably useless, given how often those systems are broken

smokey_circles··on The diminishing returns of productivity culture (2021)
Yes, weekends and holidays are the worst because I just bore myself to death. Let's go to a 7/365 work model instead
smokey_circles··on Repeal the Foreign Dredge Act of 1906
That doesn't make sense to me.

Chesterton's fence is about explicitly removing something. You can't implicitly invoke it.

What you're describing is a lack of explicitly removing things. Chesterton's fence does not apply here.

smokey_circles··on A Chinese man called 'Ma' was detained. The news wiped $26B off Alibaba's stock
The next time someone tells you crypto currencies have no worth because of something related to crypto, show them this article and point out humans assign worth to things arbitrarily and without discernable reason and the problem is regulation that doesn't account for that
smokey_circles··on Most Salvadorans have already ditched their national Bitcoin wallets
> still looking for a problem to solve

The Satoshi protocol is about creating a mechanism to achieve distributed, trustless consensus. Plenty of applications for such a platform.

Whether it's achieving that goal is a separate debate (so far it has managed to establish itself as a crazy high risk forex medium that's only slightly less unwieldy than FIX) and I'm not convinced anyone in the builder space has even a vague understanding of the problems crypto has to overcome to be _practical_, let alone replace _the entire global financial system_.

Call me a pessimist but it's not gonna happen without violent revolution (and let's not please).

But we can stop saying vacuous things like "cryptography doesn't have a problem to solve", it's clearly always been about replacing trust with verification. Que KGB expression.

smokey_circles··on Pop culture has become an oligopoly
The word you are looking for is "contemporary" and nobody is spending money to make contemporary things appealing to you anymore.

The collorary is your "counter culture" was bought and sold too. That one stung to find out, but alternative lifestyles have been manufactured for a long, long time

smokey_circles··on Historic fertilizer crunch threatens food security
As an African I laughed at this. Swiss kids not clearing their plates is not why people starve in my country. We produce enough food to feed ourselves but

1) poverty means people can't afford food

2) you're not reaching a great many villages by anything bigger than a land cruiser.

Distribution has always been the cause of global hunger issues, at least for the past few decades.

Food security is a wholly separate issue.

smokey_circles··on I replaced my native iOS app with a cross platform web app and no-one noticed
> Do you think muggles actually care about this?

Yes, you nugget. That's why UX is a thing. Just because you know how to traverse your thinking patterns doesn't mean anyone else (wizzards included) can.

Surefire way to write garbage applications and APIs: don't think about the user.

I beat this mentality out of any junior that crosses my path. You're not paid to write code, you're paid to deliver a product. You studied how to write code. Massive difference

smokey_circles··on Why I’m skeptical of “steelmanning”
Not convinced the author understands steelmanning.

I don't need to strawman myself to try to understand your argument from a good faith perspective.

I'm also not sure how this format came to life, but it's highly aggravating to sift through

smokey_circles··on Epic is asking a court to stop Google from yanking Bandcamp off the Play Store
I'm torn on this one.

I agreed with epic when they made this argument with Apple but that's because the App Store was the only way around.

Epic could just distribute an APK they build themselves. They just can't use the play store. Simple link on a website. Or the app. Doesn't the desktop launcher auto update?

Android is a lot more open so it's just weird to cry foul here but I also understand it does have an effect on their visibility.

smokey_circles··on What’s Behind the Naming of TBD54566975?
That is the dumbest argument I've heard about ponzi schemes to date. If you don't know something, just ask questions. That author is retarded.

Bitcoin has no central authority. It's just utilitarian. Crypto needs regulation where it overlaps with fiat. We should start doing that instead of having these stupid debates.

None of these have anything to do with ponzi schemes, which is the act of using new investor money to payout old investors.

People buy and sell crypto like anything else. It's not legal tender (at least not everywhere or even anywhere that counts) but if you wanna call bitcoin a ponzi scheme then so is every fiat currency and the entire stock market.

The difference between the stock market and crypto is regulation at the fiat overlap.

So can we do that instead of giving air to these completely brain dead "decentralised technology nobody controls is clearly a scam to enrich early adopters, like the whole stock market except not like the whole stock market because economics is actually beyond me" style arguments, please and thank you

The cigarette part was pure profit, no argument there.

But we banned alcohol 3 times, and 3 times the hospital's casualty admission rate plummeted.

We have a problem with alcohol and we should be talking about it
