smm11··on Craft software that makes people feel something
Circus Ponies Notebook.

That was a look into a world we steered away from.

smm11··on Pebble Index 01 – External memory for your brain
Voice recording on pre-smart phones was my jam forever, and this is right up my alley.

But don't say "Privacy," then "data sent to your phone."

smm11··on The lost cause of the Lisp machines
OpenDoc
smm11··on Raccoons are showing early signs of domestication
Just name coyotes to the AKC, would you?
smm11··on Asahi Linux Still Working on Apple M3 Support, M1n1 Bootloader Going Rust
Yeah, run Linux on the laptop made for it, and OS X on the laptop made for it.

Asahi is a bit like DOOM.

smm11··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
Not a lot of life left in Pixel 3 phones.
smm11··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
I used a super-cheap Android phone with a Win tablet over 10 years ago, but couldn't come up with a decent "phone" option. I started using the phone itself for calls, everything else I did on my tablet.
smm11··on Unix philosophy and filesystem access makes Claude Code amazing
Apple then.
smm11··on Selling Lemons
Because the internet is all about buying stuff. Got it.
smm11··on Gregg Kellogg has died
First saw his name when looking into the RhapsodyOS boot process. Might still be in every iPhone to this day.
smm11··on KDE launches its own distribution
Let's just run Haiku OS.
smm11··on iPhone Air
I'm going with the iPhone 5.
smm11··on iPhone Air
I just want one that will not break when dropped, run all day, and actually be fast on the 5G we've paid for over and over again.
smm11··on Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war
My head hurts reading a lot of this AI-like drivel. All I see is a bunch of options for better search engines here. That said, with all this crap feeding off itself, it's not going to get any better.

My bet is on Apple's upcoming announcement.

smm11··on Show HN: OS X Mavericks Forever
I so want to set this up on a 2016/17 Macbook Pro, but I have near zero drive space left just from the system itself.
smm11··on Kodak says it might have to cease operations [updated]
We need an American Samsung-like company. Kodak could have been it.

Then again, Sears could have made Amazon a pets-dot-com flash in the pan.

smm11··on Kodak says it might have to cease operations [updated]
They could have ruled the world V298768.
smm11··on Farmers want California to change its autonomous tractor ban [video]
Autonomous cars are not a thing yet, too dangerous.

So yeah, let's let giant farm tractors, larger and more dangerous than (non-firing) tanks from WWII, roam fields nationwide.

smm11··on Ashet Home Computer
Got an Amiga and Trumpcard you can have cheap.
smm11··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
I record stuff I want to have around in TXT files, by week every week over 10 years. The files lived on OneDrive for a time, but now on my desktop, backed up daily. Advantage is I can search.

My to-do list was sticky notes forever, moved to new ones when the old was getting too worn out to read. Now it's Rite notebooks as needed.

smm11··on From: Steve Jobs. "Great idea, thank you."
Yes, "thanks," from NeXTmail.
smm11··on From: Steve Jobs. "Great idea, thank you."
I emailed Steve Jobs right after he came back to Apple and suggested they make a carry-able computer that could project the interface and keyboard input to any glass surface.
smm11··on The Great Barefoot Running Hysteria of 2010
We went crap shoes, barefoot shoes, huge (Hoka) shoes, now carbon-stuffed-futuristic-foam fat cheater shoes.
smm11··on Crew-9 Returns to Earth
Republican Ronald Reagan defeated Carter in the 1980 presidential election. Although Deputy Secretary of State Warren Christopher had completed negotiations under Algerian auspices to free the American hostages in Tehran, President Carter and Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie, suffered to their last day in office. On January 20, 1981, the hostages were finally freed—but only after Ronald Reagan had been sworn in as president.
smm11··on Ruth Belville, the "Greenwich Time Lady" (2022)
Wait. 81 years old in 1892, 89 years old in 1940.

Ruth truly did master time.

smm11··on "Normal" engineers are the key to great teams
The thread on plain HTML pages comes to mind.

Boring is the key, the commercial says.

smm11··on Age and cognitive skills: Use it or lose it
I'm starting to lose it, I believe, thanks to AI.

Like many I preferred the "internet" before it was this. The War Games-like setups, mystical and empowering, and the wonder of the future, how information would free us, things we could never imagine. All to wind up with people staring at Instagram while driving and running into me and my dog, and the world/companies like Apple and Samsung shoving AI elements down our throats.

So I plan my retirement, and it involves unplugging from all this. Then what? Live in a small cabin in the remote woods? Not sure that would go well.

smm11··on Repairable Flatpack Toaster
Do it for 'smart' TVs now.
smm11··on Type 1 diabetes reversed by new cell transplantation technique
Cool! Now fix Type 2, which is managed by reducing sugar intake.

No, wait, just take a pill!

smm11··on New maps of the chaotic space-time inside black holes
We have NO idea. The movie was fun and all, but still.
