smit··on Networking Inside a Large Company
thanks for the kind words man :)
smit··on Networking Inside a Large Company
Good point. I guess HubSpot is large compared to startups. But some basic strategies like referrals can still apply to any size of the company.
smit··on Show HN: My first python web app - What do you want to do this year?
good point. issue was that it was hard to fit the description and buttons above the fold. something clickable to scroll would have definitely been a good idea.
smit··on Show HN: My first python web app - What do you want to do this year?
Great point. Our goal was just to have a campaign but it would be nice to have a system to keep track of the resolutions and maybe have resources to keep them.
smit··on Show HN: My first python web app - What do you want to do this year?
Nice app. Looks very similar to http://startupresolution.com that we launched on hn on 29th.

If you can be an accredited investor, go on angellist and you can start investing as low as $1000 in startups. Another site which is going to launch after the crowfunding law is passed in January is Wefunder which will be open for everyone.
smit··on The "We're Hiring" Call To Action
Makes sense for sure.
smit··on The "We're Hiring" Call To Action
I personally think its completely stupid to add a hiring CTA mainly because it takes away from your main CTA which is to convert the visitor into a customer. But if it doesn't hurt your funnel then there's no harm of adding it.
smit··on Ask HN: I’m not cut out to be a programmer. What are my alternatives?
Sounds like you should just start with some consulting with someone with some bizdev/marketing chops and work with some cool companies. From there you can always stumble onto a good idea.
smit··on Ask HN: What social media metrics should we measure?
No problem. Definitely can run ads for things like getting fans for facebook pages. Just start with a small budget and see if anything comes out of it.
smit··on Ask HN: What social media metrics should we measure?
First of all figure out what your goals for each platform are. Next the whole point of being active on these platforms is engagement. Start measuring how many people are engaging with your content i.e each post, tweet, pin etc (experiment with the content). Then figure out how many clicks you are getting from each one. Followers, fans are also good metrics to make sure you're growing (don't buy them). Also try running ads on each platform and calculate out if they are worth the cost as compared to your lifetime value of a customer and the average customer acquisition costs.

smit··on Ask HN: Hacker Retreat
This has been happening from Boston for a little while. Check out startupworkaway.com.
smit··on Ask HN: How difficult is it to get an internship if I have zero experience?
If you think you can learn things in weeks then I'd suggest you teach yourself a language that some of the companies you are interested in work with. Then just hit them up in spring and say you taught yourself in only weeks so imagine how much you can learn in months with them. Thats my two cents. Besides that a bit of hustle and luck will get you into companies you want.
smit··on Catalyst: a new front-end developer training program
This looks very interesting but why is the start date november? Its a little inconvenient. Why not make it January to start at the beginning of the year?
smit··on Dropbox Please Hire Jenny Shen
I love this kind of hustle. If I was dropbox, I'd hire you.

smit··on Ask HN: What are some ways of proving yourself to a startup?
You've got your foot in the door so that's awesome. I think the direction you are thinking of is correct. Try to run a small experiment for the B2C company for customer acquisition. Say spend 20 bucks on google ads and measure the results. Run other types of marketing campaign to get customers. Whether you fail or succeed, send the founders the results(it will help them save time by not working on a channel that doesn't work). This way they see that you actually give a damn about them. Remember: You don't need permission to help.
smit··on Ask HN: Have you hired non-tech people from HN?
Look at what they have done in the past. See if they've worked hard and smart on getting something. It could be personal projects, getting an internship, cold emailing people etc.
smit··on Ask HN: Have you hired non-tech people from HN?
Hustle is the most valuable skill for a non tech employee. Working hard is not enough. Working smart is equally important. Usually they have a background in marketing, biz dev or a combination of both is killer.

smit··on Learn To Hustle - a hustle tip every morning.
I'm sorry you feel that way but there's nothing wrong about me wanting to share my learnings and others' learnings with the world via email.
smit··on Learn To Hustle - a hustle tip every morning.
Blog is great but there's something to be said about having a small email tip in the inbox every morning. But I'm hearing all the feedback as it comes. Maybe at some point it might make sense for it to be a blog then I can switch.
smit··on Learn To Hustle - a hustle tip every morning.
Can you please elaborate more as I can take your feedback in account to improve the newsletter.
smit··on Learn To Hustle - a hustle tip every morning.
Thanks :) My goal is to just help as many people as I can. Learnings are better when they are shared.
smit··on Learn To Hustle - a hustle tip every morning.
I'm taking feedback from the hn folks live as it comes. I changed the landing page copy so its not vague anymore.
smit··on Learn To Hustle - a hustle tip every morning.
@eoity the aim was never to harvest email addresses :) I'm doing this to spread things I learn everyday and what others have learnt.
smit··on Learn To Hustle - a hustle tip every morning.
Allright I'll give a simple tip for today.

If you want to get lunch with someone in your company or are cold emailing them, tell them you want to hear their story. This way it touches their ego that someone actually thinks they are a big deal and wants to know more about them. It gives you a higher chance of them saying yes compared to just saying you want to get lunch with them. This applies especially if don't have any context to talk to them to start with.

Now this is just a sample tip. I will be getting tips from several folks who've done it before. Its not just going to be authored by me.

The aim of the newsletter is to empower people and give them a hustler state of mind.
