smiler··on PostgreSQL Common Table Expressions and LedgerSMB
Why not use a better non-recursive method for creating your menu tree [eg modified preorder tree traversal], no recursion required, no complicated CTE required, just a simple select?

Although it is slightly more expensive / complicated to update / insert, menu's seem to be the perfect tree for that as the chances of the tree changing that often are relatively slim.

A lot of companies offer private health / dental cover as a benefit though... don't know about the cost comparison
smiler··on Hiring Employee #1
Btw Ryan, what's your view on running a business in the US compared to UK - is it easier in one or another, cheaper in one or the other?
smiler··on You're not the CEO - You're the Fucking Janitor
Seriously, does anyone take anyone seriously who calls themselves CEO, CTO or CFO of a 5 man company? How about owner or founder. Maybe it's a cultural thing but here in the UK we'd definitely laugh at someone calling themselves that unless it was a company of a considerable size.

Dubai (& Abu Dhabi) will not be happy about this. I guess they thought they would have the record for a while.
smiler··on Kippt (YC S12) Launches Bookmarking App To Become The GitHub For Links
I love the UI and everything about this, however it's another free service I won't be using - no revenue therefore highly likely these guys will get acquired as a talent acqusition and then the service will be shut down.

Yup this is a really good example. Only thing I didn't understand was I signed up with FB so I had a verified e-mail address, yet they asked me to put one in - the default of my FB one would have been a little bit better
smiler··on [dead]
Well, they could say "We checked our logs, we see the request, and we definitely sent an e-mail".

or they could have said "I just tried with a test account myself and see that the e-mail is being sent"

smiler··on Show HN: Your online WYSIWYG editor is broken
I think this is the MVP. If you look at "What's coming", they have most of this planned.
smiler··on I am a developer, yet I outsource the development of my startup
Outsourcing has not fizzled out - I still see plenty of it ongoing
smiler··on 6.5 Million LinkedIn Password Hashes Leaked
I've just downloaded the database linked and it only contains the hashed passwords, not the account usernames / e-mail addresses.

I wonder if someone has the account details to match up otherwise you've no idea which password belongs to who, and you'd hope that LinkedIn would have lockout functionality.

smiler··on How to hire a lot of talented people, very quickly
Helidor is referencing the fact that Ryan has / was in the UK, where the school day typically runs 9am -> 3pm or thereabouts (maybe 3.15 / 3.30)
smiler··on Why I Hate Test Driven Development
Yup and I had to take two modules on it for my degree. I've never encountered anything so dull in my life! [That was probably because the material was presented in such a dry way, I'm pretty sure anything can be interesting if someone with passion is also a skilled presenter]
smiler··on No-cost desktop software development is dead on Windows 8
Apologies - I thought this was a restriction on early versions, maybe they changed it with later ones
smiler··on Miles per Gallon versus Liters per 100 Kilometers
You do not need a hybrid to get 50 mpg. Many diesel cars easily do more than 50 mpg
smiler··on No-cost desktop software development is dead on Windows 8
Exactly, Express didn't allow you to manage class library projects, which rules out almost all serious development anyway.

smiler··on A web-based Excel/database hybrid
This is the biggest concern - invest a ton of effort into something and then the company gets bought out and the product dies. The least Dabble could have done was release DabbleDB as open source.

smiler··on Want good programmers? Then pay them.
This is spot on. Most businesses, the Fortune 5000 if you will, are not operating with hefty profit margins and most as you say, have people who are not taking lots of money off the table.
smiler··on Want good programmers? Then pay them.
Some startups probably just can't afford a high salary...
smiler··on High Court: The Pirate Bay must be blocked by UK ISPs
He of course didn't mind the support of Murdoch's media empire, including the UKs most popular newspaper (The Sun) which carries naked women on page 3 everyday
smiler··on Living The American Dream
Yes, I'm British and I would love to be able to easily immigrate to the US. I know so many others who would as well - but it requires you to find a US company willing to sponsor you etc which makes it a real hassle
