Letters to a Young Contrarian - Christopher Hitchens
The Old Man and the Sea - Hemmingway
Both gave me an appreciation of the writers that led me to read more of their work which ultimately made changes in my life. With Hitchens his work on religion had a profound impact on my world view, with Hemmingway it gave me an appreciation for good writing and story.
I recent played Onward, the War Sim on the Oculus Rift. I learned that I greatly increase my team's chance of winning if we work as a team and communicate. Going solo/Rambo was not the optimal strategy.
A way I try to manage various interests is to set a goal and think of that interest as a project. So if it's guitar, learn a tricky tab that will take a month or so to get the hang of, or mobile app development would be create an MVP, etc. I find that framing these as short projects helps me stick it for a while longer, achieve something, and gives me a better way to talk about it with other people.
I spent 9 months in the Balkans region in my early 20s and later in life I had 5 years of work travel which took me all over the world. Both are some of the best times on my life, and two very different experiences. I'd recommend it to anyone.
I would advise to spend the next 10 years getting as much varied experience as possible, through travel, work, friendships, relationships, self learning and so on. Try to form a broad idea of what you want from your life, and move on that direction. Take opportunities, push yourself, keep an open mind.
I think this is great, I found a few good threads and articles this morning that I missed. Ironically the first was about spending too much time online :)
My hypothesis would be look to modern day science fiction to get an idea about the future. Shows like Black Mirror & Devs, and I'm sure many others have curious ideas about the near to mid future. There are some examples of early 20th century ideas becoming reality by the late stage of the century.
Congratulations on the milestone! And for plugging away at the project, it's great. I noticed a small formatting issue, I think, on the privacy policy page there is a button which has the text "Canvas::Blog Buttons.Next", I assume you probably meant for the text to say something different. Did you build the webpage yourself or use an agency for any of it?
I also quit social media. I've replaced it with other things that bring some quantum of use in my life, chess, learning a language, playing guitar, and other various projects. I find the time I would have wasted on social media is now time better spent.
Similar here, it takes a lot of practice but really satisfying when I see progress. I also see this as a long term hobby that hopefully can continue for many decades, so happy to be on a slow path. Happy golfing etothepii!
I'm not in the age demographic you mention, but also not far from it. I've picked up chess, German, and golf. I've found the key to getting better (so far) is simply to practice as often as possible, even a little per day. I also think being older I have the confidence that I can learn skills, and I know that I only need to apply myself. In my younger years I used to think you either had the ability or not, but now I know it really only takes practice.
Cool question. I've always wanted to record an album, I'd do that. Music, vocals, mixing, mastering, prepare some visuals to go with it. Invite some other people to join in where they could.
