smallpipe··on The quest for a simple smartwatch
The double counting of bike activity as steps drove me crazy when I had one. Made me switch to a garmin.
smallpipe··on Google Calendar and Assistant Reminders Will Migrate to Google Tasks Soon
That's really cool! One thing I can think of, instead of setting the shortcut to run when your phone is plugged in, you can make an automation start when an app is opened/closed, so if you use this on the Reminders app, it should do the sync automatically.
smallpipe··on Europe’s Longest Bicycling Tunnel Opens in Norway
They’re naturally opposed in a way. Bike infrastructure is car infrastructure, you need protected cycle paths etc where there’s a lot of cars or they’re going fast. If it wasn’t for cars, the current infrastructure is great for bikes.
smallpipe··on Smartphones with Qualcomm chip secretly send personal data to Qualcomm
Did you read the article? Qualcomm legal team replied saying "yes we exfiltrate data, see this privacy policy".

What else do you need ?

smallpipe··on Developers should be force-fed state machines (2011)
You realise you're allowed to use more than one state machine right ?
smallpipe··on Bitwise Division
The example is literally one cache line, which probably won't affect the rest of the program too much. But given the average L1 throughput, I'd bet the bitwise version is faster
smallpipe··on Diabetes drug Mounjaro was available at $25/month, then increased to $1k/month
The obese are mad at the diabetics, the diabetics are mad at the obese, while they should be mad at their failure of politicians who won’t regulate the drug market like any other functioning democracy. It’d be funny if it wasn’t so tragic
smallpipe··on Small SaaS banned by Cloudflare after 4 years of being paying customer
Lol good luck building anything
smallpipe··on The Great Pi Zero Showdown
An important figure that I'd like to see is the energy efficiency. In a lot of applications, the microcontroller is going to be asleep 95%+ of the time.

For those, what I want to know isn't really how fast it can do $COMPUTATION, it's how many time it can do it before I have to charge the battery.

smallpipe··on Ask HN: What made you finally grok Git?
Same for me. This has great visualisations, I’ve not found any better explanation.
smallpipe··on Facebook has a hidden tool to delete your phone number, email
I'm going to bet that data isn't just from people who gave access to their address book, it's probably from advertisers as well.

Advertisers can upload a list of mobile phones, email address and names to Facebook to ask them not to target these people (for example, existing customers).

smallpipe··on The computer errors from outer space
> every single bit of memory (including registers) would have extra bits for this, and checks would occur everywhere it's moved or used (even over buses inside IC's, regardless of whether they shift data, addresses, control logic, etc).

That's one of the two approaches used for automotive silicon. The other, which is a bit more expensive but usually considered safer, is to run the same circuit twice in parallel (usually with a few cycles of offset) and compare the outputs. If those outputs don't match, the system is reset into a fail-safe mode.

smallpipe··on Linux 5.19
You widely underestimate how much work goes into documenting hardware.
smallpipe··on Helium has revenues of $6.5k/month after $365M investment from A16Z
> mined some coins early on without 'taking wealth from others'

And how exactly did these mined coins become USD ?

smallpipe··on My 40-liter backpack travel guide
Or even thinking in his case...
smallpipe··on My 40-liter backpack travel guide
Ah that explains why he seems absolutely insufferable
smallpipe··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
The problem isn’t the gas being burned, it’s the gas not being burned. Natural gas is a much stronger greenhouse gas, to the point where leaks make up more of the greenhouse effect of residential gas than the CO2 from burning said gas.
smallpipe··on No, you can’t save £30 per year by switching off your “standby” devices
IIRC, a kWh of electricity is about 3x more expensive than a gas kWh. You’re correct if your heating is electric (resistive) though.
smallpipe··on 95%-ile isn't that good (2020)
> Sometimes with deliberate practice, including reading strategies, playing custom maps to practice certain skills, and watching series aimed at improving level of play.

The article argues that you need more than "sometimes deliberate practice".

You forgot the most important part which is looking at your own replays, and having someone better than you look at your replays.

smallpipe··on Georgia teacher read the fine print and won $13K (2019)
And the actual “clue” looked like a borked copy paste in the part of the syllabus telling you about university wide policies that the student would have read elsewhere already.

But sure lazy students don’t read the syllabus

smallpipe··on Missouri found mask mandates work, but didn’t make findings public
Do you want to see a list of politicians who didn’t obey the speed limit and conclude that speed limits are a big conspiracy?
smallpipe··on It‘s been 9 years since Valve rolled out the Steam Linux beta
Reaching a single digit percentage larger user count in exchange for 30% of your revenue is questionable accounting
smallpipe··on Prevent Google from mangling search result links when click/copying on Firefox
It’s great if you’re on an unfamiliar machine and need a calculator with loops. It’s also great to press all the buttons on a website.
smallpipe··on A different kind of keyboard
For me the desk space makes it worth it (but the clackity clack is definitely an added bonus)
smallpipe··on A different kind of keyboard
Are you aware of split keyboards? I use a mistel barrocco (essentially two normal keyboard halves tied together with a USB cable) and j can’t recommend it enough
smallpipe··on Arm AArch64 Adds Memcpy() Instructions
I'm willing to bet that within 5 years we'll see a CPU that effectively embeds a DMA engine used through this instruction. The way I'd implement it is a small FSM in the LLC that does the bulk copy while the CPU keeps running, while maintaining a list of addresses reads/writes to avoid (i.e. stall on) until the memcpy is finished.
smallpipe··on Arm AArch64 Adds Memcpy() Instructions
This instruction doesn’t prevent the implementation of doing that, it just gives a standard interface.
smallpipe··on Raspberry Pi config for all things Internet
Since I'm cheap (and I have a pretty terrible internet connection) I've just installed openwrt on a TP-link wifi router I had laying around.
smallpipe··on Raspberry Pi config for all things Internet
If you have a good router that does some queue management and doesn’t suffer from buffer bloat, it shouldn’t impact it too much.
smallpipe··on TLA+ is hard to learn (2018)
I agree it’s workable, but it’s a bit of a hack. Commercial formal verification software for RTL has this built-in, and once you have 10+ people updating a spec, you need an automated way of checking for accidental constraints.
